I have a question for any of you who need to lose more than 5 or 10 pounds, or who already have. I have lost 10 pounds so far, and I have 25 to go by my goal at the end of July.. at what point can I buy some new clothes that won't be so huge on me, but no too tight either. Right now all of my sweats and pj bottoms still fit (gotta love elastic bands!) but a lot of my jeans aren't safe to wear in public.. if I bend over, they might overexpose me!
Thanks ahead of time! :)
P.S. I'm starting my summer job in about a month and a half, so I might need to get some office attire.

if you're asking about sizes, it partly depends on how tall you are whether you lose a size for every 10 lbs or 5 lbs, or whatever. one good tip i've seen here is to try consignment or resale shops for the "in between" sizes. you don't want to spend a lot of money on clothes you will only wear for a month or two!
When losing weight, I had to buy some "cheaper" clothes. I could not afford to redo my entire closet 2-3 times. So the shirts I have are not the best quality, but at least they somewhat fit.
For my first few months, I kept wearing the same clothes. It got to the point where I looked like a kid wearing his dad's clothes. When I finally started to wear clothes that fit, that is when people finally noticed I lost weight. hehe. The clothes were bulking me up.
I shop with sales these days. Not just 10% sales. I walked into a store that I like and their $60 shirts were on sale for between $10 and $15. So I bought 6 of them.

I'm a big believer in dressing for the body you have now. With that said, it often comes down to a funding issue.
I like the suggestion of buying cheaper clothes. Check consignment shops, ebay, etc. Or try Target, Wal-Mart, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, outlets if you have any near you. Old Navy also has some great deals - you'll be surprised at how much $100 can buy there - it stretches far!!
And think basics: one pair of black pants and a pair of jeans can go pretty far. It depends on where you gain your weight, but for most of us, it's the pants that are most noticeable when the size is wrong, and the tops that are more forgiving. So you might be able to make due fine with your usual size tops for awhile, but invest in a few pairs of pants. Also consider dresses and skirts - they tend to be more forgiving IME.
When I gained this weight, I went from a size 2p to edging out of a 6p. I only bought a few pairs of pants to accomodate the 6p, but then again, I telecommute so don't need to dress up every day. I've been pretty much living in elastic-waisted sweats for nearly a year. On the plus side, it encouraged me to get outside and walk... I am always dressed for exercising!
I've since lost enough weight to get down to a 4p... I had a few things in my closet that are "passable" at that size, but I also did buy a few more newer things because I was getting bored of the sweats, plus the weight is coming off verrry slowly now, so it may be another season or two before I'm back in my 2's.
Plus, looking nice keeps me motivated. There's nothing more depressing than wearing a size that is so tight the flub falls out around the waistband.... for some people, that may motivate them to keep dieting: for me, it just makes me think dreaded fat thoughts and like just wanting to give up and give in. Whereas I don't mentally mind so much if the clothing is a little loose all over... not only is that more comfy, but it helps make you feel thin!

My rewards for sticking to my exercise and eating plan is getting to buy new clothes that make me look amazing. When I was in-between I bought alot of stuff that was on sale at dirt bottom prices, because I just couldn't wear pants that were falling off my body anymore.
I have two pairs of pants that I bought that I should get altered to fit my smaller frame, but I'm too lazy to go to a seamstress.

i'm only 5'2 3/4 .. so when I lose weight, it looks noticeable. HUnny said he noticed my backside lloked smaller (yeah!).
What cut of jeans are the best to wear for in between periods?

Altering clothes is a great way to update your wardrobe to match your size -- and it allows you to save money for new clothes when you reach your goal. Take in your pants when you can, and when you can't (jeans are far too hard to sew!) shop and second-hand stores and clearance racks. You may not find your favorite style or your perfect fit, but it will get you by for the few weeks or months you need it to.
For stuff you can't alter or buy used (like undergarments) shop as discount stores like Ross and Value City -- you can get overstock or slightly imperfect stuff for really cheap (I recently bought several bras that retail at $20-$30 for less than $5 each.) Again, you might not be in love with them; just remember that you don't have to wear them long.
If you can't alter or buy used for whatever reason, buy really cheap at places like Wal-Mart and KMart -- their most inepensive stuff generally loooks fine, at least for a while. It's so cheap because it doesn't last. In this cae, you don't need it to -- so save your money to buy nice clothes when you're maintaining your healthy weight.

Fortunately I'm able to "go shopping" right in my own closets...I have every size from 0 up to 14!
Today I'm back into a smaller cut of my 12s from wearing nothig but sweats for months....feels good!
I learned a very long time ago, never to get rid of fat clothes or too small either....
But for the odd things I only shop extreme sales and only buy things that I know can be altered at bit. Fortunately I'm a really good seamstress (have 3 machines) and make most of my clothes.
Isn't it wonderful that your clothes don't fit! Good luck :)

I agree with Jenmcc, shop cheap and buy the basics. one or two pairs of pants can look new everyday by changing the shirt. Even shirts can look new when you change the order of the layering or the acessories. I have 4 shirts that fit right now and I layer two of them in different orders everyday, and then a sweater on top, and to change the look of the sweater I will stick a scarf on top. Dont worry, soon this size will pass and you will be in a more permanant size where you can stock your closet!
This thread has been really helpful. I'm not alone! I've lost 60 lbs in the last 6 mos and am so tired of the baggy look! I've been sewing and sewing taking in my old clothes and it just seems to never end. I didn't expect to whine about losing weight, but the constant change is starting to wear. I have a few decent clothes from my thinner days that now fit and finally people really noticed the difference. So I just recently gave myself permission to buy more clothes and find shopping the thrift stores gives me the best option. Cheap and some really nice stuff if you make the rounds. I'm still altering clothes, but I find that the long tunic look i was stuck with before is truly unflattering, so I'm cutting off shirts at the hip bone and it looks great. It's the change of season that has me worrying. This is expensive!
RE: best options: go for elastic waists, and stretch fabric if you can find it (even denim) with shirts that tuck out to cover the elastic, but are not long and baggy. I wear leggings at home and to work out. They haven't required as much altering. The worst thing you can do is wear those baggy clothes. They weren't flattering when you weighed then, they are definitely worse now!

Goodwill has been a godsend. I can't afford new clothes but have found some great clothes - name brands at the Goodwill. I can usually come out of there will 2 - 3 outfits and not spend over 10 bucks.
Good Will and the Salvation Army!
Also, my school does a thing twice a year where they have "clothing swaps" so people changing sizes can just trade stuff (they say you have to bring nice stuff). Lots of weigh loss groups also do this (Weight Watchers type places). Perhaps even start your own! Put an add up on craigslist (craigslist.org) or talk to some coworkers or friends. Just try to put together a group of people of different sizes to clean out their closets!

Buy some clothes with some stretch in them...I just bought some capri jeans that accomodate my 'extra' ten pounds...yet when I lose them I can still wear them because of the stretch factor.
