clothing while you're "in the middle" and when do you buy new clothes?
This isn't a complaint. I'm doing great. I have gone from 179 to 164... 15 lbs. 4 lbs from my goal weight... I think I might shoot for a few more lbs...maybe 155 or so. I still have some "love handles" that I would like to lose and I think it will take more than 4 more lbs to lose them.
The problem is that most of my clothing doesn't look good. It's too baggy. None of my work pants look good anymore, but i don't feel like I should buy more right now because I am still "in the middle."
My question for others is, do you just deal with it, knowing new clothing is on the horizon? Do you alter things?
My other question is how long would you maintain your weight before you buy clothing in your new size? One month? 3 months? six?
I was just complaining about this today. All of my clothes are baggy and I feel like I have been sporting the "dumpy" look, luckily I'm a grad student so no one cares what my clothes look like. None of my shorts fit - none at all. I bought a pair at Target and I decided to buy things as needed but not go over-board.
Once I get to my goal I'm going to reward myself with a shopping trip.
I found a tailor that will look at my clothes and let me know if they are worth having them altered.
I've lost 23.2 lbs and want to lose another 15. It's weird cuz i tend to put on the baggy clothes/pants instead of the smaller more appropriate sizes I own. I think psychologically, I like the feel of the baggy clothes because it makes me feel thinner. I put on a size down pants and felt like a fat pig but at the same time I know it's a great achievement to be able to fit into that smaller size. Weird mind games huh? I'm really trying to move past that. I know from personal experience it is deadly to wear stretchy/baggy clothes. So my advice to you is to go out and buy/or alter your clothes to your new size.
Wow, boy do I hear ya. I'm at that exact stage right now. I've gone from 175 to 161 lbs and my clothes are baggy and dumpy BUT I cannot fit into the next size down yet. What to do?
It doesn't help that I hit a plateau. I want to get down to my next pants size so I don't feel so ragged anymore. Unforunately it takes me a looong time to go down in clothing sizes (regardless of how many pounds I'm losing).
I've lost about 25 pounds, and have started to alter some of my clothes. I wear skirts more often then pants, and those are easy to alter yourself or take to a tailor. I've gotten a few new shirts at thrift stores, too. Most cities have higher-end consignment shops just for professional clothes now, too, which is handy for getting work clothes. I still have a long way to go, so I'm trying to minimize my spending on in-between clothes.
Shop at a good thrift store and you can buy new clothes every month so that they always fit perfectly! I didn't get any new clothes until I was down two sizes... but now I'm going to get new ones as often as I need them... I also 'took in' the waistband on a few of my favourite skirts so that I could still wear them for awhile.
Good question! One that I have been meaning to post too! I have lost 15 pounds and i have about 7 or so more to go now. None of my pants fit me at all! My tops fit, some are too big, but most still work, although with pants, NOT ONE fit. I've been wearing skirts to work, and leggings when I go out. But I wasnt sure if i should wait a certian period of time too see if the weight is maintained before i buy the new clothes.. I think the thrift store is a great idea or like Winners (Target) would be a good idea... I bought a pair of really fitted jeans about a month ago and now they dont fit! That was a difference of only a few pounds...
I'd say thrift store would be best until you're at your weightloss goal and its maintained for a couple of months.
Now i need to find a good thrift store!
Ebay!! I've got two brand new pairs of jeans that cost £40 (about $80) for 99p ($2) each in a size smaller as a mini-goal! I'd buy a pair of trousers for work that fit you now, then get a few more when you've maintained your goal for 4wks (as a reward!) I'm living in jeans that are baggy now too, I can't fit into my new ones yet...but I will!
I'm a college student without much money but I have to say that when it comes to clothes if you feel like you don't look good in the clothes you have buy at least a new pair of jeans or two (when I say new it doesn't mean they have to be brand new. I usually to the salvation army store just to get a cheap lower size.) I have found that having clothes that make me feel good helps me to be more active energetic and happy which helps me stick to my weight loss goals.
I think it's a really good idea to buy clothes for the size you are, instead of constantly waiting. If you feel good about losing weight, you don't want to bring that feeling down by wearing clothes that don't make you feel good.
I realize not everybody can afford to follow that line of thinking, but I think that it really helps if it's possible for you to do. You don't have to replace your whole wardrobe with every size you drop, just get pieces you feel great in that you can mix too.
I have lost a total of 50 pounds and I kept my larger tops (until they just looked horrendous), but tried to make sure I always had at least one pair of jeans or pants that fit well. For me, it was about self-confidence and self-esteem. I looked so much better in proper fitting pants that it was worth it. Limiting it to just a pair of pants, rather than an entire wardrobe kept the cost manageable. Congratulations on your progress!
I have been having the exact same issue. Luckily I saved a few of my pairs of jeans and work pants from when I was smaller, but I gave the large majority of them away to friends (when I was depressed and thought I would never be skinny again). For now I am dealing with "baggy butt syndrome".... wearing belts to hold my pants up that are a size or 2 too big. I am not planning on getting any new clothes until I reach my goal weight. I am planning on going to the thirft store over the weekend to see if I can find some cheap pants to wear for now.
It is a great feeling to have all of my clothes falling off of me though. ;)
I have quite a few sizes in my closet, and will for another size or two. So I'm trying not to buy too many things, but only because I have things that I can wear. A few of my larger pants that I really really like I want to get taken in soon, because they really are starting to look dumpy. A couple pairs are getting too big and are so worn out that they are falling apart so those I'm gonna toss soon.
Right now I'm kinda trying to figure out what to do about my wardrobe. I really need to go through it and be honest with myself about what I will or won't wear. I think I have some smaller pants that I've held onto for sooooo long, just because I might fit into them again, but really, they are so out of fashion now, that I would probably be embarrassed to wear them. I should just toss them. And I have shirts that I wore in high school. I've been out for 10 years now. Gotta get rid of those. yeah.
thanks everyone! I plan on going through my clothes when I get home from work tonight and putting them in 3 piles: sell to Buffalo Exchange, take to the thift store, get taken in.
I have a lot of nice, pretty recently purchased jeans and work clothes that I think Buffalo Exchange will buy. If you get store credit, you get more for your clothes, so I will do that and use some of the credit to get something for work in my current size. I will hold on to the rest of the credit until I lose a little more, or need something for a particular occasion.
I have a couple of very flattering and recently purchased dresses that I am going to take to a tailor.
Luckily it's the end of the winter season and I was able to just pack away my baggy winter clothes. Yay!!
I have smaller sizes in my summer clothes and larger sizes. I love summer clothes so much that I had a hard time parting with the smaller stuff and hoped one day to fit back into them. So far I don't have to buy any new clothes. Yay!!!
I've gone from a size 12 to 10 and hopefully soon to an 8.
Congrats and welcome to the baggy pants society!!!
I have donated or passed to friends so many clothes lately that I have unearthed about an acre of closet space.
While dropping off yesterday I picked up some really great items at my favorite thrift store, I had to laugh everywhere on the racks I was coming across my old clothes.
I refuse to spend top dollar for jeans, casual wear and such while I am losing and even when I am in maintenance I will always dig a fine pair of thrift jeans for $1.99.
Consignment shops are a must for the more tailored put together for the office looks.
I hope you have as much fun with this part of the game as I have.
