Anyone in this grouping looking to drop from 140 to 130's. We can all use support. Today I am focusing on all the food groups. Exercise would be good, but I won't be able to since I am working from 9 to 10:30. A Super long day. I hope I can stay focused, when I pass the fast food chaines on my travels today.
Hi all - I am curious too hhbroad... tell us more!
Kil - thanks for the encouragement. I know you're right - it's nice to hear it from this little "support group!" My husband says there is a difference howing already and says he can't "get enough" of me - says all the exercise is a turn-on! Haha! So that's a good thing. Especially coming from a guy who's in such great shape.
Knarik - how much do you exercise each day to get a 600-900 deficit? What is your routine? I think I need to take it up a notch. I am generally burning about 300 cals / day in exercise. I am in the "sedentary" column because I have to sit at the computer all day. I don't plug in household activities into my calories burned unless I really did something that made me breathe hard.
Ok - ready for this??? I just got back from my 4-day trip to LA. Oh man! I met my husband's 100% Italian family. Talk about the food! Large quantities of fantastic food - and wine tastings daily! No chance for counting much less being good. But my hubby and I jogged / walked every day.
Not beating myself up... but I am back on track and glad to be back - hope everyone had a good weekend!

from my point of view, the body's processes of losing and gaining weight are much more complex than the simple calculations of calories in versus calories out and 3,500 cals burned equals a pound lost. (for example, low fat dairy products targeting abdominal fat.) that said, i know we have to have something to go by, some estimation we can use.
so in answer to question of calorie deficit, i wasn't calculating that at the time, but i can go back now and estimate for you.
*So I am very interested in hearing from people who have had awesome results w/ the 500 cal deficit a day thing. And obviously I didn't keep that weight off, since I'm here. I went home for the summer, never went to the gym, went out to eat ev. night w/ the boyfriend, ate fast food w/ him, was a couch potato, and drank like a fish. Unfortunately I hadn't thrown out my bigger clothes or maybe i would have been forced to stop myself.
NOTE- i loved seeing the scale move, and i did fit into awesome tiny jeans, 2 sizes smaller than i started, but i would be concerned w/ this about losing muscle mass as well as fat. Strength training would have been the responsible thing to add.

- i was doing an hour (almost) ev. day on the elliptical trainer. on the readout this was around 500 calories burned, though i'm always suspicious they over estimate :)
- i was walking to class and to work ev. day, though not far at all. Three times a week i walked 20 min each way to my internship. i will enter in "Lightly Active" for my lifestyle b/c it didn't amount to 2 hrs a day of walking and the rest of the day i was sitting.(though off the top of my head i would have thought this was at least "moderately active," so again, beware of numbers that lull you into eating too much/not doing enough activity) the rest of the day i was sitting. This gives an estimation (from the C-C Daily Calories Tool) of 2000 cal I needed/used a day. I entered age 22, weight 140 (in the middle), height 5'7''.
- i was shooting for about 1200 calories a day in eating.
- correct me if i've completely messed this up, but i was eating 800 cal less than my daily expenditure, and i was expending another 500 cals w/ my workout. so, I was supposedly running a 1300 cal deficit.
- in the spirit of full disclosure, some other keys to my wieght loss at this time, if you didn't see it before.
- coffee!! esp. before cardio workout. I don't think i would have had all the willpwer w/out caffeine.
- i Always had breakfast. us. oatmeal. or apple and peanut buter.
- i ate 6 times a day, spreading out my calories.
- when i felt hungry for naughty foods at night and wanted to gorge, i went to bed!!!

wow, hbroadbent! that's huge! i can never get myself to stay at 1200 :) i'm usually somewhere between 1400-1700 :) but i figure that i'm zigzagging my calories naturally so i don't have to worry about it, LOL :)
i think that my deficit is usually between 500-800 calories because i know that i burn a bit more than my CC log says that i do. but i'm not sure HOW much more, so i figure this is probably a pretty good estimate. but without reallly depriving myself, exercising regularly (about an hour pretty much every day), and eating healthy foods, i've managed to lose 15 lbs since the beginning of december. and i'm happy with that.
i do strength-training three times a week and really enjoy it. i'm seeing more muscle tone and i'm definitely getting stronger--so i'm not worried that i'm burning muscle. i think some ppl would say that i do too many reps with too light weights (i usually do 15-30 reps with two sets), but it's what my trainer said to do, so i'm sticking with that!!! :)
it's been great because my b/f has become really supportive and tries to keep things in his apt that are healthy and he knows that i can eat without feeling guilty.

- oh! and i kept a daily food journal. but i did a visual one. i drew little pictures of my meals. you can really See how Much you're eating.
what are people's thoughts on weighing yourself once a week vs ev day?
i say, do what works best for you. and don't let yourself get obsessed with it. i weigh every day, but the fluctuations don't get to me because i know when i fluctuate up, i'll also fluctuate down. so i don't celebrate the 2 lb overnight drops or beat myself up over a 3 lb increase from the day before (disappointed sure--but over it in about 3 seconds). when i first started, and started losing weight, i got kind of obsessive about weighing myself several times per day-and i realized consciously that that was not a good place to be. so now i only weigh myself in the morning. i refuse to step on the scale any other time. and that works for me.
i think, though, if i hit a plateau (which i have a nagging feeling may not be far off), i will go for a while without weighing myself. do the once a week thing so that i focus less on that and more on how much exercise i get and what i consume.
i also keep a food log!!! i just pair it with my journal. so it's great because it's got me writing in my journal every day :) i kind of do a countdown too--i try for 5 servings grain (or fewer)- 4 veggie (or more)- 3 fruit - 2 dairy - 2 protein. it's a simple way for me to keep track and it helps keep cals at good levels and you get a pretty good balance of nutrients.

jenn- I actually am only doing cardio 5-6 days a week .usually only 5 days, and can be from 30-50 minutes. I burn somewhere between 300-400 each time. The reason my calorie deficit is usually so high is becuase CC says if my activity level is sedentary I burn 1800. Everyday I try to consume 1200 calories. Therefore 1800-1200=600. thats not including the 300 that i at LEAST burn at the gym. If I include that, my total net deficit is 900 calories.
HOWEVER i'm usually only having sedentary days maybe twice or THREE times a week TOPSSSSSSSSS. So, not including work outs, the majority of the time my activiy level is at light activity becuase i work at a coffee shop where i'm on my feet and I also go to college. CC says with light activity I burn 2,100. ON those days I eat 1200 also. That would be 2100-1200=900. Thats not incuding work outs. If i work out on work/school days I eat more so my deficit wont exceed 1000.
Does this make sense? It is at times hard for me to eat 1200 a day, becuase i always crave junk food and i know I always will. Sometimes i'm so close, literally holding the muffin/chocolate in my hand ready to eat it but something (thank goodness) keeps me from doing so. I seriously had no idea how much will power i had.

knarik--it actually might not be a bad idea to increase your intake cals a little bit--especially when you're exercising. 900 is a pretty big deficit and might be hard for your body to sustain--especially since you're not at a really high weight.
Kiigan-
I agree with that. Actually recently i've been eating between 1200-1400. maybe 1200 one day, 1400 the next, 1200 the next two days, 1500 the next. Like that. I know this will be good for my metabolism. Not to mention the one meal a week where i dont count! that meal is actually tomorrow night and i'm a bit nervous, my boyfriends mom is maknig us dinner and she likes to cook a lot of GOOD but HIGH in calorie foods. Good thing is, my boyfriend is vegetarian so at least I knwo i can avoid the red meat she always makes. I'm not going to count the calories for that meal, btu I am going to count the rest of the day.
I'm bummedthough, i cant go to the gym tomorrow OR saturday.Like i said, i was ony able to go three times this week. I hoe that doesnt slow me down too much. NExt week i'll be back up to 4-5 days.
I havent weighed myself since like sunday the 11th, or somewhere around that date because my scale broke. ANd when that broke I realized I stay more on track when I dont weigh in every day, and it was also a good mini goal for me to have to be around 140 when I DO weigh myself again. I'm getting my new scale on the 1st or 2nd of march and i'm giong to only weigh in once a week. That works a lot better for me.
I HOPE Im at 140 by then!! THats so close to being in the 130's! hahaha
How is everyone doing?
I also bought a size 8 jeans the other day. I've been size 10-11 for SO long!! however, they are old navy jeans and ive never got jeans from there before so i dont know if they run larger. Either way, they're 8 and i'm stoked!
Kiigan i get paid today too so i'm going to try and go to the levis store wherei normaly buy jeans and see if their 8 size fits me! If they do, i know it's a success! I still wont buy them though because i'm hoping i will get even smaller and i dont want to waste any money! :)

Well it sounds like just paying attention to what we are eating and making our work-outs a priority is great news for all of us. It's clear we do things differently. My deficit is only 200-500 daily. So my weight loss is slower. But I am only 7 lbs. from my goal of 130! Pleasantly surprised to see I lost 1 lb. despite my trip this past weekend and the eating extravaganza that went on.
For TGIF let's all share a little fun tip or recipe.
I have 2 things to share:
one: my "lite" lemon drop martini: I use 1 shot of citrus vodka, 1 shot of vanilla vodka, I make a shot of triple-strength crystal lite lemonade and shake all in a shaker w/ ice. I rim the glass with a fresh lemon and shake on Splenda. It's pretty darn good! 130 calories.
two: I have been lightly jogging up my steps in my house. I go up & down for 5-10 minutes and I burn anywhere from 60-100 calories! Easy, quick, cheap!

Hmm...
Here's one for me:
I always use the bathroom two floors down where I work. Since I drink a lot of water--I go up and down those stairs about 10 times during the day :)

yeah--i usually eat closer to 1600 cals most days with an expenditure (total) around 2100. So usually 500 or so deficit.
yay! My people!
I'm trying to drop from 143 to 130.
I just started, so hopefully I will do well!

Thanks kiigan!
Yeah I used this site last year when I was working out and watching my diet, and it worked great. I stopped because of life, which sucked. But now I want to get back on track! I'm young and I don't want to waste my youth feeling sick because I'm not leading a healthy lifestyle.
I'm only slightly overweight 15lbs, but it's enough to make a serious impact on how I feel. So, I'm back!
And these forums are a blessing...I have to sit at a desk all day for my job. At least i have people to talk to to keep me from snacking!
P.S. I just checked out your profile. We TOTALLY HAD THE SAME MAJOR! I was international affairs. I studied Japanese :D I'm hoping to go there with my bf this winter.
Wow...what a coincidence!

haha! that's crazy dolce!!! i'm actually going back to japan this summer as part of a student conference (even though i'm no longer technically a student...) and that's part of why i want to get in great shape. a few of the ppl were with me on the same conference last summer and i want them to be like d***! you look great! hopefully it works! but i've got about 5 months, so that should be plenty of time.
did everyone have a good weekend? i managed to eat decently and i got my exercise in on saturday and sunday. i'm just pushing to get in another 120 minutes to meet my 1500 exercise minute goal for february!

I had another "bender" this weekend: wine tasting party and then my own
Oscar party last night. It's impossible to be at parties and be good
much less count calories. I do need to find some more restraint,
however I am not going to beat myself up over a 2-time spluge.
Especially when I eat healthy the rest of the day and workout 6-7 days
/ week. Also, I lost another pound! Yeah - 7 lb.s until my goal.
Anxious to workout tonight to try to get the weekend binge off.

congrats on the weight loss! i seem to be at a standstill right now...but hopefully i kick that this week. or just go down a teeny bit :) i meet with a trainer tomorrow, too, so i'm prolly gonna ask her for ideas about what i should do to make sure i keep losing.
bumpin' this baby up to the top!!!
had a good training session but arms are gonna be in pain tomorrow! can't wait! and just 65 more minutes to hit my 1500 minutes of exercise for feb!!

hi all, i posted in the weight loss section and kiigan directed me over here. I just weighted in at 149 today - whoo! finally got past the 150 mark and i'm on my way to 130. :D i started in early january at 155.5. i'm losing about 1 lb/week and that works for me. I see a HUGE difference in the way my clothes fit and the way my body looks. Actually, it blows me away that the change could be only 6.5 lbs so i'm thinking i must've gained muscle.
anyway, i'm just sitting here waiting for my hubby to get home to work out with me ... he's taking forever and i'm getting more and more tired as i wait. grrrrrrr.
