When I entered dancing into the activity log, the most appropriate form seemed to be 'low impact aerobic'. However, I am slightly disbeliving that I could have burned around 900calories!
If this is true, I would be very pleased! Going out could become an integral part of my weightloss! However, is there any evidence/reasons to suggest that this is not the correct figure?
Thanks!
i think 300 an hour sounds about right (for my age/size), as long as you dont take lots of breaks or drink alcohol.
lately i love to go roller skate - local rink has an adults only night - anyways, i dont take breaks, i try to skate as fast as possible because my goal is to fly around the rink dancing effortlessly. im up to about and hour and a half before i have to stop. whats weird is that the activity log gives me 475 an hour for regular skates and 750+ for in-lines. thats a big difference...
fun workouts are the best! i take my 19yo daughter with me sometimes, she has a good time too.
I wish my friends read your post! I try and try to get them to go rollerskating with me but they just laugh and think I'm being silly!
I try to convince them that its great fitness and fun and beats sitting around drinking every single time we hang out!! grr.. I'm going to keep trying to make them go though!
gotta say i dont believe it!
If walking at 3mph burns approximate 200 calories or so, then dancing in a night club should easily burn 300 cals. So I can believe that figure quite easily.
I guess the best thing about this activity is that you are doing something you enjoy and it isn't seen as 'exercise'. Although when people go clubbing it is accompanied with alcohol (lots of it in the UK - binge drinking etc), which probably defeats the object.
I tell ya, when I go home after a long night of dancing..in heels..I feel like I've burnt about that much so I would say keep enjoyin it! I don't drink so it really helps!

I guess if clubbing for you is consistant dancing then you could easily burn 900 plus calories in 3 hours you stated you were there. Typically, clubbing also includes alcohol and possibly a late night/early morning stop at in and out burger ;)....so I guess it depends on what you consumed and the intensity and duration of your dancing.
Yes it sounds very reasonable to be burning 900 cals per 3 hours of clubbing. But if you think of it, what do you do when you go clubbing? Drink alchoholic beverages which are very high in calories. Although you are burning those 900 calories, you're probably getting more calories than burning with the amount of drinks you've had.
Buy a heart monitor/calorie monitor watch. BEST thing I have invested in. I can monitor my calories and try to push myself more when possible.
Yep, depending on your weight and height, and the intensity of your dancing, you could easily burn that much. I have pretty strict rules for myself when I go out, pertaining to the drinking:dancing ratio. First, I make sure to save usually about 500 Kcal of my daily food allotment in order to be able to drink. Then, I only drink vodka sodas (65Kcal for a one ounce VS), and I limit it to about 4 (seems like a lot, but when you used to be a big park of the binge drink club culture, over 4 hours, 4 drinks is pretty minimal, but makes you feel like you're still participating). Then, I dance hard, pretty much the whole time I'm there. Those nights almost always end up with a weigh in the next day where my weight goes down by about 1/2 a lb.
Very likely to be accurate, if you broke a few sweats it might be even more than that (moderate intensity). Just stay away from high calorie drinks, since they just dehydrate you and make you tired anyway, and you`ll be having one of the best possible workouts ever. :)
Thanks for your replies - I guess I will be going out more after all!
I tend to drink rum or vodka with diet coke, which I can keep 500 - 700 calories. With all the danicng, it seems that I am burning off all the alcohol calories, provided I don't binge when I get back.
i am sure this is how i maintained such a high weight in the past. i used to eat like a cow.... but i used to go out clubbing 2-3 days a night. thank god it somewhat equaled out ...because i should of been obese with the amount of food i was feeding myself
Please leave those poor baby seals alone!!
I'm sorry but in my day and age "clubbing" was only done to baby seals
Whenever alcohol is consumed it is the first fuel to burn. While that's going on, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop the weight loss, it simply postpones it, since the alcohol does not store as glycogen, you immediately go back into ketosis/lipolysis after the alcohol is used up. I believe it takes an hour to burn an oz of alcohol from the body.
here's what happens to fat metabolism after the odd drink or two.
. A small portion of the alcohol is converted into fat.
. Your liver then converts most of the alcohol into acetate.
. The acetate is then released into your bloodstream, and replaces fat as a source of fuel.
