So, came across this video on CNN, and just had to laugh.

I think for the most part, the video is right on point.

If you exercise and continue to eat crappy food, you will won't lose any weight.  Diet is at the top of the weight loss heirarchy - exercise is second.

What passes as exercise for many people probably wouldn't burn 100 calories.  And yet they feel as if they can continue to eat the same or more amount of bad food.

I agree to an extent, but I feel they didn't emphasise enough about calorie restriction along with excersize when trying to lose weight. The only point they tried making was "If you excersize, you won't lose any more weight then if you didn't excersize", like they assume everyone who goes to the gym will come home and make up the calories they burned.

And unfortunately, some fat ass  at home is watching that clip saying to themselves "Oh hell, then I won't even bother working out now, THEY HAVE A STUDY SAYING I WON'T LOSE WEIGHT"

Right message, HORRIBLE delivery.

You're exactly right.

The headline should read "Exercise without diet as a means to lose weight is a myth".

But that doesn't quite have the shock value of "Exercise is a myth" Laughing

Yeah, that's what I see happening too.

Similar thread on the Time article about the same topic -

*burns gym membership card*

Gotta love the free 24 hour gym membership through my old job hahaha best thing they ever did for me.

This made me think of all the gym members that come and run on the treadmill for 30-60 mins then go to the market and chow down on some donuts, chips...

Working out is not an excuse to eat crappy! Working out is a means to a healthier, fit body -inside and out - that coupled with NUTRTION - will make you look awesome and FEEL even better!

 and liquor.

It is very hard if not impossible to out-train a bad diet. If you are in a calorie surplus at the end of the day you will gain weight.  Whether you also went to gym that day or not is beside the point.

That said, there is more to the equation than scale weight. Even if the poundage number is unchanged whether you exercise or not (personally, a debatable concept) body composition will change for the better. A lower body fat percentage is healthier, not to mention more attractive.

So it is really unfair and misleading  to generalize that exericise is not important
