i recently got a vegan/gluten-free/sugar-free cook book for my birthday and all the recipes call for coconut oil. i've always thought that coconut oil is bad for you but apparently not? does anyone know anything about it? i've also read somewhere that it's good for weight loss. how does that work? any info would be greatly appreciated!

It's an oil, just use in moderation.

There's no such thing as a 'good' or a 'bad' food, just good and bad quantites of food.

I use coconut oil as I would any other oil...sparingly.

I sometimes cook with coconut oil. There are different qualities you can buy, and different types of processing.... but I have never experienced more or less weight loss because of coconut oil.

has antimicrobial effects i.e destroys disease causing organisms within the body and is a better energy provider than glucose; on the down side high in saturated fats and can lead to higher levels of cholestrol

There is an article at t-nation, a site for body-builders, that gives coconut oil super food status. The section on coconut oil is on the second page.
