I was just wondering if anyone knows if coffee speeds up your metabolism because of the caffeine. Like, will a cup in the morning boost your metabolism for the day?

Yes.  I think it's bad for you, though not worse for you than overeating.  It is the caffiene.

I have heard from many sources that ceffeine PREVENTS you from losing fat. It stimulates cortisol and encourages your body to hold on to your fat stores. So, while it may make your heart beat faster, it doesn't correlate to quicker fat loss.

I have tried dieting and exercise with very little success and I have been a "can't function before my coffee" person for 10 years or more.

I just recently quit coffee (I'm still a little awed that I've done this!) and I'm starting on The Zone diet. I will see if the weight loss is any easier this time around.

i don't know how well it speeds up your metabolism, but i know that caffeine is a natural appetite suppressant and diuretic. so if you drink it you feel less hungry and it flushes out your system. obviously though in huge amounts (like i drink it) coffee is really not that good for you.
coffee is probably a two edged sword.
a cup in the morning fine.
It is now linked into helping ppl NOT get alzhimers (however you spell that)

It helps ppl and has flavoinoids (however you spell that)

But even better would be a green tea.  I just love my coffee.

I've heard about what some of the others have said it hinders weight loss YET some say it helps weight loss.

I say have a cup in the am if you want to and better yet have some green tea.

I hang out with nutrionists and this is what I hear...

I looked this up the other day, as I drink at least a pot of coffee per day:

"Caffeine increases the level of circulating fatty acids. This has been shown to increase the oxidation of these fuels, hence enhancing fat oxidation. Caffeine has been used for years by runners and endurance people to enhance fatty acid metabolism. It's particularly effective in those who are not habitual users.

Caffeine is not an appetite suppressant. It does affect metabolism, though it is a good question whether its use truly makes any difference during a diet."

Oddly enough we've heard Milk helps our bones.  Is no longer accurate info.  Milk leaches the calcium out of the bones.  Not many ppl know that.  I found it interesting.  It's hard to know what is true anymore.  I guess if you see the studies and a credible source to gain info from.  I enjoy using Dr. Andrew Wile whos' been on Oprah and even that Dr. Oz is very smart. 




The thing is that stimulants can stop helping the body in about 6-8 weeks. Your body adjusts to it.

Going totally caffine free and having only water would be more effective as dehydration can slow you metabolism. Even mild dehydration.
