Coffee - Water - Trade off

Quote  |  Reply

Hello,

I know that coffee is not as optimal as water to get your two liter of liquids per day. But does it count at all? I mean, I read that Coffe counts half as water (e.g. 1liter coffe per day counts as .5 liter as liquid). Is it true?

Or do I have totally disregard the amount of Coffe I drink from my liquid balance?

Best,

Stefan

Not a coffee drinker myself, so I never looked into. But since they say that the water in your veggies counts then surely the coffee would count as something too.

I do drink (a few too many) diet sodas, but I do not count them in my fluid consumption. I always make sure I do the recommended water intake and figure that everything else is part of the bonus plan.  Smile

I think it all depends on the strength of your coffee!!!  If you go for that espresso-style ink they love in Italy you'd probably dehydrate if you drank more than a cup or two.   And that's the downside of caffeinated drinks, they have a dehydrating diuretic effect despite being mostly water.  I'd suggest you match every cup of coffee with the same volume of water to offset the effects... and try to keep to just a couple of drinks a day.  Or go de-caff?
To my understanding, coffee actually DEHYDRATES you

so when drinking it , you need MORE water.

Its a diuretic! But I still get my cup a day in in the morn'! :)

Proven myth.

If your body is used to the caffeine then it doesn't have a significant diuretic effect.  All fluids can be counted towards your total intake, but not all fluids make you feel the same as others.  Some people just feel better drinking water, some people say it doesn't matter what they drink, they feel just fine.  It's individual.
