For those in college/going to college

So, how do you cope/plan on coping with being surrounded by people and your eating habbits?

Right now I am dealing with disordered binge eating- I am off to uni in october and I dont want my life to revolve around food, and I definately do not want to make people uncomfortable or embarass myself with my odd eating habits.

To add on top of this, I feel quite uncomfortable eating around people. For some reason I just go crazy. Today I consumed around 15000 calories and just stopped when a friend said quite seriously "Tati, don't you think that's enough?"

I felt quite horrible then...

So, for those of you that count calories/ lead a healthy lifestyle/have odd eating habits, what do you do at uni?

I'm off to england and, even though I binge big-time, I dont like all the fried fish and chips and burger king (mostly what uni students eat especially on their first year!). Any tips on how to deal with this?

Thank you

Hmm... well, I don't really have an answer for you but I'm thinking that since you're entering into university now it's about time you began developing a more normal eating pattern. Since you are able to sense when enough is enough (i.e. when your friend pronounced that you had eaten quite a bit) and you are now a young adult, it's about time you take responsibility for your decisions and use your better judgment to govern your diet.

When in uni, not all of the activities done with friends revolves around food. Take some time to spend quality time with your friends, discussing topics of interest and sharing stories. Don't spend your quality time face to face with inanimate objects (no matter how tasty). Also, don't be embarassed by your eating habits... simply exercise some self-restraint while surrounded by others.  Show self-confidence when eating out with friends... I myself have some very awkward eating habits (i.e. dipping my fries with my frosty shake, eating the crust of my sandwiches off first, eating the cores of my apples and pears etc.) but since I've learned to laugh at myself, and joke around with friends, all is well.

Hi! I am starting my second year in college in the fall. I actually lost weight when I was at school, living back home for the summer :(. It is because I started to walk everywhere and I worked out six days a week. I also only drank about once a month...I have found new ways to enjoy life. See at my school we have a site that puts the nutritional info on the food that is in the commons, so that always helped me with making sure I didn't eat anything that I really didn't want to.

Bottom line, exercise, don't go crazy with the drinks, and eat as healthly as you can. Dont worry about it too much. College is amazing!

I just graduated high-school myself and the prospect of college is exciting, though I took a pre-university course called "IB" which I'm sure almost no one heard of it, though if you did then I bet you know how it's like XD.

Doing IB is much like the first year of uni, at first I gained weight then I lost it. I gained it because I used food to relieve stress. I lost it as a result of low-food intake because when I got used to the work-load I was too busy to eat. I had time to exercise but not eat...which is quite retarded if you ask me. What I can tell you is plan your meals ahead of time, that helped me alot. And bernadetteb said know the nutritional info of the common ingredients/food you eat that way when your shopping for them you know what you'll be taking in. And one thing you should keep in mind is NOT buy junk-food if you don't want to eat it. Because if you do have junk-food in your apartment/dorm then you'll crave for it, no junk no craving =P. And even if you DO have cravings your gonna have to walk over to the grocery store to get it by that time you may or may not have walked enough to realise that you don't really want to do this.

I'm from the US, so this might not be of much help.  When I went to uni, I lived in the dorms my first year.  I hated the dining hall food, but there was a kitchen on my floor, so I ate would buy my own ingredients and make my own food.  Unfortunately, I still had to use the dining halls on occasion...the meal plan was a requirement.

The Internation Ballacurate... ( cant spell it),,, Im doing that!:P

what i suggest u do is find a non caloric food EX: Lettuce. and eat it when u feel like binging.

i know first hand how binges are marked on cravings so the hardest thing to do is to FIGHT the cravings! LOL once u go one day u can think I Went YESTERDAY i can do it again TODAY and so on and so forth. and keep ONE day outa the week that u alow urself to have  a treat.

Buy yourself A LOT of that delicious sugar free fruity gum (Extra has the best varieties like Mango Smoothie!) and chew it ALL THE TIME! It definitly relieves a lot of the urges to binge as your body feels like it's eating something sugary and sweet. So what if you have a bit of a gum addiction? It keeps your mouth occupied and your teethe clean : ) I hope this helps. It did for me.

Also, a change in environment might actually help you. College is so different from being at home. You may be too busy at times to even concentrate on binging. Then you will also be paying for your dining contract, meaing you WILL be limited to the amount of food you can get your hands on.

I wish you the best of luck : D

pearsnapples: i LOVE your default picture! i really do! Laughing

as someone who counted calories for a long time and binged then dieted over and over again, i would say that it's optimal for you to make a lifestyle change. Eat when you are hungry, and stop when you are satisfied. Eat lots, of veggies and fruits, then snack on other foods like meats, breads, brown rice. works very nicely.

Get it through your head that you are not on a diet, but are making a lifestyle change. Nothing is off limits.
