Since College.....

I totally understand where you are coming from, except in two years since I started at my desk job (which was before i completed college)...I have gained almost 30...OUCH! But since I started on CC, I have been taking a 1 mile walk on my break everyday at the same time (unless I am in a meeting), and then when I get home, the FIRST thing I do is workout (about 30 minutes), that way I don't get too cozy. If I am going to jog, I throw on my jogging clothes and I go, and if I am going to cross train, I go right into the spare room and get started (DVD's or resistance bands), that way I don't "get started" on something and make excuses not to. I also found that works out well too because by the time I am done, I am ready for dinner. (I usually get hungry after working out anyways) this helps me not to overeat.

THe "real world" is soooo depressing. I am excited because I will be starting a part-time job as a nursing assistant at the hospital a couple of evenings a week, this will be great in allowing me more time to move around.

Oh my gosh!  You don't have to tell me about the "real world."  My good word of advice is to nip the problem in the bud.  It is worth your time now to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle, or before your know it... you'll be me.  :\

Before graduating I felt into the "a little bit chubby" category.  I worked as a field biologist for a couple of years and then I got a desk job.  I've had said desk job for 7 years and it's been nothing but bad for my health... 75 pounds worth of bad.

Your mission is to find a way to incorporate exercise back into your day.

i was the same exact way! played soccer all my life and in college.... its so hard with a real job now, finding the time but what has worked best for me is bringing the workout clothes to work and going to the gym right after.. once you get in the habit you will feel "weird" if you dont workout right after work! plus.. if you can find time at work, even walking a bit can help, i usually take 2, 20 min walks a day when i dont have any work to do!
oohhh yeah. I'm right there with ya. I don't do well with the sedetary lifestyle that my job has forced me into. I also used to walk everywhere on campus.

I just started walking to work because I live so close to my office. I used to take my car because I was sent on random errands. I figure if they want to send me out, they can wait the extra 20 minutes for me to walk home and get my car. Or they can go themselves XD

I realized the other week that I HATE going to the gym because it bored me, so I had to figure out how to get exercise without making myself want to cry. Walking seemed to be it. I guess I'm lucky I live close to a lot of stuff, so I can easily walk places.

Actually, I discovered that exercise is a catch 22 for us office folk. We have no energy because we don't exercise, and we don't exercise because we have no energy. Lame, I know.

Try walking places if you can. I've found it's great because I just listen to my iPod and wander around. I walked to the bookstore last night, which was about 15 minutes. Count the 15min back and I had my half hour of exercise for the day.

If that doesn't suit you, you could try finding some local sports groups if you enjoy that. Maybe a biking club or something of the sort. You sound like you used to be pretty athletic.

The hardest part is just making yourself get up and do it. Once you do, you'll want to keep it up.

And yes...technology has a LOT to do with it. *shakes fist* If I didn't love my computer so much, I'd get rid of it :P It's a necessary evil.
i know what you mean.  I loved working out at 3 pm in college.  Now it's 5pm.  It seems so late.  Although i love working out.  It just doesn't leave time for much else in the evening.  So usually my dishes and laudry get shove aside.  It makes me never want to have kids.  My house will prob be a complete mess!
I also have gained about 30 pounds since starting my desk job 2.5 years ago.  But luckely, I am about to graduate from school as a massage therapist . . . so good bye desk job!  A lot of my weight gain was not just from sitting at a desk all day though. . . much of it was the munchies that kept me from being bored.  I have now learned to always keep fresh water and carrot/celery sticks at my desk so that I am not as tempted by the cookies and soda in the kitchen!

Yes, I've been out for 1 year, and I notice the change too. Even if I do put in the exercise, my 9-hour day plus commute makes me too tired and apathetic to do the 2-hour workouts I used to do at college. Plus, I no longer have the luxury of working out while there is daylight, and it's always harder to get up before dawn to go to the gym or to go after work when I'm exhausted and hungry for dinner.

I guess we just have to make ourselves do it. After all, there's a good many years ahead of us in this rotten work life-style our society demands of us. I suggest finding something that you really enjoy and getting a partner to motivate you. For example, I started kickboxing, and since I both love it and paid for it in advance (and money is tight) I feel obligated to go at least twice a week. It keeps me in shape even when I'm skimping on my other workouts. Plus, keep healthy snacks on hand at work, like fruits and pre-cut veggies, and make sure you don't indulge in too many company free-food offerings (like I tend to do, oh those free cookies at work are the devil...)!
