THe "real world" is soooo depressing. I am excited because I will be starting a part-time job as a nursing assistant at the hospital a couple of evenings a week, this will be great in allowing me more time to move around.
Oh my gosh! You don't have to tell me about the "real world." My good word of advice is to nip the problem in the bud. It is worth your time now to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle, or before your know it... you'll be me. :\
Before graduating I felt into the "a little bit chubby" category. I worked as a field biologist for a couple of years and then I got a desk job. I've had said desk job for 7 years and it's been nothing but bad for my health... 75 pounds worth of bad.
Your mission is to find a way to incorporate exercise back into your day.
I just started walking to work because I live so close to my office. I used to take my car because I was sent on random errands. I figure if they want to send me out, they can wait the extra 20 minutes for me to walk home and get my car. Or they can go themselves XD
I realized the other week that I HATE going to the gym because it bored me, so I had to figure out how to get exercise without making myself want to cry. Walking seemed to be it. I guess I'm lucky I live close to a lot of stuff, so I can easily walk places.
Actually, I discovered that exercise is a catch 22 for us office folk. We have no energy because we don't exercise, and we don't exercise because we have no energy. Lame, I know.
Try walking places if you can. I've found it's great because I just listen to my iPod and wander around. I walked to the bookstore last night, which was about 15 minutes. Count the 15min back and I had my half hour of exercise for the day.
If that doesn't suit you, you could try finding some local sports groups if you enjoy that. Maybe a biking club or something of the sort. You sound like you used to be pretty athletic.
The hardest part is just making yourself get up and do it. Once you do, you'll want to keep it up.
And yes...technology has a LOT to do with it. *shakes fist* If I didn't love my computer so much, I'd get rid of it :P It's a necessary evil.
Yes, I've been out for 1 year, and I notice the change too. Even if I do put in the exercise, my 9-hour day plus commute makes me too tired and apathetic to do the 2-hour workouts I used to do at college. Plus, I no longer have the luxury of working out while there is daylight, and it's always harder to get up before dawn to go to the gym or to go after work when I'm exhausted and hungry for dinner.
I guess we just have to make ourselves do it. After all, there's a good many years ahead of us in this rotten work life-style our society demands of us. I suggest finding something that you really enjoy and getting a partner to motivate you. For example, I started kickboxing, and since I both love it and paid for it in advance (and money is tight) I feel obligated to go at least twice a week. It keeps me in shape even when I'm skimping on my other workouts. Plus, keep healthy snacks on hand at work, like fruits and pre-cut veggies, and make sure you don't indulge in too many company free-food offerings (like I tend to do, oh those free cookies at work are the devil...)!
