i normally just bring a nutrition bar like pria complete, kashi or luna. and water. its all willpower to stay away from the cips and chocolate.
Try some fruit, like an apple or banana.  Also Dannon Light n Fit yogurts are only 60 calories each.  My advice is to try not to wait too long before meals because when you get too hungry it's easy to eat everything in sight.  Also, if you really are craving a junk food snack, buy the smallest one they have (single serving if possible).  For example, don't buy the big bag of Oreos, but the little pack that has 6.  Still quite a few calories but it will help your portion contol.  Also, just try not to buy the junk food... if it's not there, you can't eat it!  Another favorite snack of mine are the Fiber One bars.. they are really good for only 140 calories (and filling!) and I get my chocolate fix with them!

I found my new favourite snack today!

6 Dare Grains First Crackers with 2 tbsp of hummus=120 calories and delicious!

I just stuck the hummus after measuring it into a small ziploc container and the crackers in a baggie and i was set!

I tend to smuggle apples and bananas out of the cafeteria to snack on later.  Also, be sure to drink lots of water--I know I tend to forget that very important element when I'm busy with school.  If you're trying to suppress your appetite, take advantage of a hot drink, like tea or coffee.  It tends to fill you up somehow when you've got a bit of a craving for something.  Better yet, make it a nonfat latte or a British style tea with a bit of skim milk and an Equal or two--yum!
I've become a vegetarian since coming to college, so it's easier to be healthy. Sometimes. :)

I'll choose salad or brown rice or fruit or stir fry or wheat bread with peanut butter or veggie burger or (my personal favorite) mac and cheese! :)

But it's been hard to avoid the bready, sweet stuff like croissants and cake and muffins and white bread and poppysead bagels. I mean, in moderation they're fine, but I overeat them when I get the chance. :(

and I smuggle fruit, too, abbie. :) SAME NAME AS ME! weird.
College was not an easy time for me food wise either...but what I learned was to always have healthy snacks in my backpack so if I did get hungry I was good to go.  I also would make myself walk to class.  I had to get up earlier so I could make it but that was one of the ways I kept the weight off.  Also at night when I was up late studying and I wanted to mindlessly eat I would air pop popcorn.  Helped me stay away from the vending machine.
Everyday I bring a ziploc bag full of fresh cut veggies (green pepper, cucumber, celery, baby carrots..) to classes. Veggies are the best snack...they are low cal, really nutritious, and fill you up! Same for fruits as well...they're just slightly higher in calories, but definitely better than stuff from vending machines or whatever.
Just make sure that you're super careful...

I went to college weighing 105, came out weighing around 120 for my freshmen year... I had always had a "fast metabolism" so I'd undulge sometimes but eat "healthy" most of the other times. Just know that even getting a salad at the salad bar can be your greatest vice--schools tend to starch the salad... that's right, they spray it...so be careful.

As for all the tips... use them! Drink LOADS of water, stay away from soda and fruit juices--too high in sugar. Beware of fruits becoming a diet breaker, they have a lot of sugar in them... so don't think you can just over load.

Load up on high fiber foods, veggies, and the occasional protein bars & crackers. The problem with crackers is once you start... it can be hard to stop, so make sure you portion them.

I'm a senior in college and I gained 40lbs my freshman year because I was severely depressed and did nothing and ate everything. I'm a senior now and have taken off 25 of those 40. I did that this summer. Here are a few tricks I used.

1) eat 6-7 times a day. 3 solid meals and 3-4 snacks. my snacks are usually something like fruit or low fat string cheese.

2) Eat lots of fruit. Fruit will help control your cravings for sweets because they have sugar in them.

3) Eat healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, fish) this will help curb your cravings for unhealthy fats.

4) DO NOT deprive yourself. I make room in my diet for 1-2 desserts a day (usually a fat free pudding cup or a all natural fruit popsicle).

5) Do not keep junk food around. If you know you are going to binge on something don't buy it. If you want junk food for a now-and-then treat buy a single serving bag of chips or go out and get a kids ice cream cone.

hope this helps.

good advice rae852004! i'm a HUUUGE fan of the fruit popsicle...you feel like you're eating way more calories than you actually are.
