College Students

Quote  |  Reply
Hello! I am starting a club for college students. It is hard going off to college and making the right food choices...I think we can support each other and talk about healthy alternatives to food choices. I am going to be a senior in college next year and I am trying to lose that weight I gained from college.

A little about me, I'm a biomedical engineer...I'm recently engaged and I love to drink (which is horrible if you are dieting)

about my weight...

I'm 5'10" medium build

started at: 172lbs

currently at: 140lbs

want to be: 140lbs <~~ made my goal!!! took ~6 months

Since College/Classes are done for summer...How did everyone do with the diet??

    Okay, I'm a freshman, pre-med, and I'm a biology major.
I am 5'6",
I have a large frame,

starting weight: 135 lbs
current weight:  125 lbs
goal weight: 120 lbs

Mostly I'm just trying to stay fit and have some way of measuring what I am eating, and how I am excercising so that if I gain/lose weight, it won't catch me by surprise, and I'll actually know why.
"Fashionably late" as usual... LOL

I'm a 20yr old college student at a Tech College in Southern WI....  eww that sounds awful.

Anyway, I didn't gain the freshman 15, more like the freshman 5.  BUT I'm barely 5'1'' and quite small framed so I looked awful.

Starting weight: 109 lbs

Current weight: 102 lbs

Goal weight: 98 lbs

My goal might sound low, but when I weighed 97 as a freshman in highschool (haven't grown in height unfortunatly) I looked great, plus had a lot more muscle... so with my height and frame it's at the low end of normal BMI.

The hardest thing for me is staying around 1200... I either dip far below (around 800) or binge and get up to 2000+...  add my alcohol habit in and it makes it even harder.  I love running, pilates, and yoga, but haven't been doing it as often as I'd like to/should lately.

It would be great to get to know anyone else in my similar situation!  And being young we are all at an advantage: faster metabolisms, walking to classes, and establishing these healthy habits now can hopefully carry us through the rest of our lives!  Keep truckin' ya'll!  haha :)
Hi, I'm a junior psychology major. I'm 21 years old and go to Case Western Researve University.  I am 5'5"

starting weight: 158

current weight: 150

goal weight: 135

I exercise pretty much everyday and try to watch what I eat.  When I was on a meal plan it was so hard eating at the dining halls, but I think that now that I don't eat there, it's easier to eat healthy.  Although my biggest problem areas that I want to work on what I eat when I go out with my friends to restaurants and my drinking.  There are times where when I drink a lot I tend to eat a lot of unhealthy junk food, so I really want to work on cutting back.  I like the water idea and would love to read any other advice on the problem areas I mentioned
Hi I'm in my second year and I'm pursuing a double major in Women's Studies and English.

Height: 5'2

Current Weight: 117-18ish

Goal Weight : 109-110ish

I want to achieve this by the end of the semester, so sometime in April.  In first year I started off at 115 and gained 10 pounds by Christmas. Luckily I've worked some of that off but wow, was I eating horrible in my first semester.
Hi... Im 23 (but Im still a student) Getting my Masters in Psychology... at Trent University in Peterborough Ontario.  The eating habits of a student still plauge me... I love to snack while I study, haveing something to chomp on helps my nurves... anyway, when I was in my first couple of years I would snack on chocolate, and chips... then I decided to get healthy I moved onto liquorish, and cereal... I then switched to nuts and dried fruit... I LOVE dried fruit... then next step is veggie stick, I am running out of time thought! Also, I have had some diet problems in the past and now at 5' 7" I weigh in at 131lbs my goal is 125.

I work out five times a week before classes and walk (to go buy my dried fruit at the bulk store) for at least an hour each day on the weekends.  I find it really helps relieve stress!

So  how are we going to keep each other motivated to stay healthy and reach our goals?

And yes I still get caught up in drink nights... I hate trying to count calories when I can bearly remember what happened the whole night!
I'm 20 and I go to Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio and majoring in Media Computing.  I gained weight since I came to college.  It is hard to make the right food choices at college.  The cafeteria offers alot of unhealthy choices and the healthy choices are limited.  I don't know how much the nutrition info on here will differ from my cafeterias actual nutrition content, but its probably close enough.  I started out at 205, and I want to get down to about 190 for now. Right now I stand at 199.
I love this forum!! It's so hard to eat healthy in college when you don't have money to go grocery shopping.  I think most college kids either eat too much or too little contributing to so many problems.  If you eat better...you'll feel better...and you'll concentrate better. However...I need to practice what I preach.

5'5"

Currently at 160 lbs

Goal Weight: 132 lbs
Okay... I'm joining this group too... I guess if you want to call it a group...

I am also a senior will be graduating in '08 sometime and I want to lose all the weight I gained from being at college and then some.  According to the BMI index, I am serverly overweight.  Which I agree with entirely!

I actually went to our wellness center or whatever they call it to get some help.  They gave me some brochures and said "Hey you're not overweight. All you need to do is exercise and eat healthy."  I coudn't believe what they told me.  I'm 180 lbs and I'm short. How can you believe that I'm not overweight.
I am 5' 2.5"

Currently: 180 lbs

Goal Weight is 120lbs
I totally thought I already joined this but maybe not!!

Well, my name is Jenn and I'm a junior graduating in '08. I want to lose about 70 more lbs (I've lost about 25-30 already).

It's so great to know there are other college students going through the same things!
hello everyone! it makes me feel better to know we're all in this together! i go to school in new hampshire. i'm 5'8" and 140. i started CC a week and a half ago at 142 lbs. i hope to get down to 130. good luck!

maybe if we started a weigh-in on mondays we can keep each other on track? i'll start a thread on monday: 'college student monday weigh-in'. look for it if you're interested!
I'm definitely interested!
college haha i dont understand why people gain weight in college... must because we dont have PE class anymore. well im pre-med bio major and all i do i sit around with my head in a book drinking coffee... but i have to say i did finally get off my butt and started moving! need to get healthy again so i can stay alert and study!

im 5'7'' i dunno about my build some days my finger and thumb touch, some days they dont... =T someone have some imput? medium largeish build?

currently: 169!

started: 210! yikes i dont even know how i got into the 200 range.

goal: 145.
OK, I'm very interested in this. I'm a college freshman and I've already gained about 8 pounds since september. I think the major problem is the dining-hall, it'll probably be better to live off-campus and be able to cook healthy stuff. I've been trying to work out everyday and count my calories. I heard that squeezing lemons or limes in water and drinking it can help you lose weight so I've been doing that too. I'm going to weigh myself today and see how much i've lost...if i've lost anything!!!

Starting weight: 143.5

Currently at: 141

Goal weight: 125

I'm 5'4"

Hello everyone. I'm also a college freshman. I'm a STudio Art and Informatics major. It's also been hard maintaing weight due to the dining-halls. There's a huge dilemma about not eating there to eat my healthier foods and wasting the meal plan I was required to buy. I can't wait to live in an apartment. I tend to be a health-nut sometimes but in other times I'll just eat anything, esp. if I'm not aware of the calories in school food.

I'm 5'5"

CurrentlY: 130 lbs.

GOAL: 125lbs.

caf food is awful!! i hate that chips and deep fried cpizza pops are cheaper than veggies and salads and wraps! it drives me insane.

i gained 25 pounds in rez last year, and managed to work about 5 of it off after i realised i was rounder than my pregnant sister-in-law. :S also, i lost about 5 pounds over the summer, having very physically demanding jobs.

i gained 5 or 6 since i came back (i don't weigh myself anymore) and im just looking to get a little slimmer and muscley where i am a little pudgey.

my best advice for healthier eating is taking a sunday morning to prepare lots of meals and put them in tupperware in the freezer. use measuring cups so you know how much is in the container. then you'll have a good solid fast meal to look forward too, less influence to pick up tim horton's while in your last class!

also packing your lunch and deliberately leaving your change/small bills/debit card at home will prevent unhealthy snacking..... so long as you dont pack unhealthy snacks :P
great idea!
I'm a junior in college (I lost my freshman weight the summer after gaining it) but I'm still struggling with weight maintaining.

5'9"  medium build
currently 150
goal        ; 140

I also, drink far more than I should.... unfortunately I go to a small college and am somewhat known as "the party girl" and therfore am usually out partying 3-4 nights a week (but I'm trying to bring that back down a notch or two!)
I work out consistently, though and watch what I eat (no fast-food, or junk-food for me) so I try to balance my unhealthy lifestyle with a healthier alternative.

Well you have to be disciplined, I have been happy though I have been able to maintain a zone of 184-187 conformtably so far since mid December and I hope to keep it that way. It is a challenge but I have found to force myself since I buy my lunch now since my living situation has changed I have $10 for lunch for three days, I can only spend that $10 in those three days. I usually get the Daily Special at Subway w/ Veggies and Olive Oil, wheat bread. The only one I skip is the Meatball sandwich because it is like 600 calories which is more than I normally have for lunch because I usually have two/three eggs for breakfast and hash browns and then for dinner whatever I can get my hands on but I don't go over board. I usually only have one serving unless I am really hungry after waiting for about 20 minutes after I have eaten. This is where you have to be careful at school because you still feel hungry being around your fellow classmates that have food in front of them. So I normally try to take a 1/2 to 1 mile walk after lunch to register I am full and satisfied.
