College Students

Hello! I am starting a club for college students. It is hard going off to college and making the right food choices...I think we can support each other and talk about healthy alternatives to food choices. I am going to be a senior in college next year and I am trying to lose that weight I gained from college.

A little about me, I'm a biomedical engineer...I'm recently engaged and I love to drink (which is horrible if you are dieting)

about my weight...

I'm 5'10" medium build

started at: 172lbs

currently at: 140lbs

want to be: 140lbs <~~ made my goal!!! took ~6 months

Since College/Classes are done for summer...How did everyone do with the diet??

I'm a freshman (Music Ed/French double major) in college... I haven't gained the "Freshman 15," but I would still like to lose weight.  I started a new routine of exercise and healthy eating a week or so ago.

5'5" small build

Started at: 137

Currently at: 135

Goal: 120

... I'm generally just a lurker on the site, though.

I'm a big drinker and since I'm so restrictive with what I do during the week, I allow myself to drink on the weekends. However, the key part is avoiding the "drinking munchies" and avoiding drinking so much that you can't control those munchies at all, (sometimes if I restrict too much during the week and I drink SO much that I am not putting any thought into what I am putting in my mouth I will eat the most outrageous things to try and "compensate" for being so good during the week. Unfortunately, it is absolutely terrible for me and very counter-productive.
Other than that, just plain drinking doesn't seem to affect me too much.
the drunken munchies are the killer! i agree with you kitt_27, the drinking does not seem to affect me that much, but the eating afterwards is really bad.

i am 5' 6" medium build

started at: 160

currently: 134

goal: 125

this weekend is St. Patty's day and I'm in Boston... uh oh! anyone have any plans for the weekend?

I'm a second year biology major, and I've literally got nowhere to go but down (in the good way). I just started my diet last week, and I'm very hopeful.

5'11" Large build

Started at: 298 lbs

Currently at: 295 lbs

want to be: 200lbs

Only a couple drinks for me come St. Patrick's Day.  Booze gets me into trouble.

Hey, I'm a freshman accounting major (but I swear I'm not boring!) and I just want to get in better shape and tone up for the summer (my LEAST favorite time of year, i dread trying on bikinis!). I've tried several fad diets that didn't go so great in the past, and now I'm just trying to eat healthy instead. I'm only a few days into it, so still in the "optimistic" mood about it.

5'9"--medium/muscular build

Started: 175lbs (October '06)

Now: 164lbs

Goal: 149lbs...but I'm worrying more about lowering inches and body fat percentage

Good luck to everyone, and have a great St. Patty's!!

i don't drink anymore, but i know it can be a super hassle on your diet plans. here's my advice i'd found to be helpful

1) avoid drinking games, especially with beer. drink at your own pace, there's less chance of getting sick this way. (or cheat and play with a diet pop, or other light beverage)

2) try to alternate alcoholic beverages with virgin drinks. diet pop, club soda, light juice, and water are all good choices, water being the best.

3)it might take you fewer to get a little tipsier than you think.... especially girls. girls metabolise alcohol really slow, so it takes 40 minutes or so for that first drink to hit you.

4)opt for bottled drinks (ie smirnoff ultra) over drinks mixed by yourself or friends, just for portion control

5) do NOT bring your bank card or credit card to the bar, and set a reasonable limit on how much cash you are going to bring. cash in your pocket = extra calories you do not need.

6)if climate allows and you've got a willing buddy, walk to and from the bar... i mean within reason. i'm assuming most college students live within 30 minute walk of a bar.

7) dance! dancing burns 500 cals an hour, i've heard.

8)if you must have snacks to avoid a hangover, try drinking several glasses of water, then making a sandwich, or light popcorn, or cereal, which is a lot of food with lower cals. just say no to take out, and avoid the bar with cheap wings..... you know you cannot justify saying 'no' to 25 cent wings by telling your buddies you're dieting
hey, i'm in the same boat as most everyone here. gained a lot of weight first semester, but have been working hard and am now back to my pre-college size. I'm thrilled about that. My next goal is getting down to a healthy ideal weight of 120 (i'm 5' 2")... though to be more realistic (taking natural fluctuations into consideration) i'm giving myself a range of 115-125.

I drank quite a bit first semester, but this semester i've backed off a TON with the drinking, and it has definitely helped my weight loss. I still enjoy a few every now and then, but I feel no need to go crazy anymore.

That being said... I am going on Spring Break to Mexico with some friends, and I KNOW that i'm going to be drinking a moderate amount nearly every day. I don't plan to get plastered (though it's bound to happen probably one night), but I do know that i will probably have a few drinks throughout the day, and a few each night. I have purposely not had a drink in more than a month for a few reasons... firstly it will be easier for me to justify drinking every day for a week, and secondly i won't need as many drinks to feel a little tipsy which will save a few calories. Still, does anyone have any tips to help me get through this trip without completely screwing up all the hard work that i have put in the past few months, and without reversing the weight loss results i've already achieved?? My hope is to maintain on this trip, and then to continue my weight loss after.... it is a vacation after all. I'm really worried about this! I know my friends are going to be drinking a LOT on this trip, and while I don't want to go crazy, i also don't want to enjoy myself less by worrying so much about how badly i might be breaking my diet! What should i do?

Howdy to everyone out there!

Last fall I started Graduate school at Texas A&M.  As an undergrade I would say I put on the usual freshman 15 and then some.  Taking a year off before starting grad school was nice and I lost the weight that I had gained.

Although I can blame myself for gaining the weight, I can also partially blame the school for requiring a meal plan.  Talk about horrible food!

Anyways for about a year I was a member of an all woman gym, which was great.  Along with working out 5 days a week there and at home most days I lost about 50 pounds in a year.

I have continued to loss weight and the end is getting closer.  I work out at the campus gym 4-5 days a week doing 30 min of cardio.  At my apartment I usually do strength (magazine routines) 4-5 times a week.  I also watch what I eat very closely.

Starting weight: 220 (Spring 2005)

Current:  145

Goal: 130
I'm glad to see other college students on here!  I'm a senior and I had a bad ankle injury which resulted in 7 months of physical therapy, the end of my amateur Kung Fu career, and a lot of weight gain.

Right now I'm at 199, 5'4, small frame but possibly too built, and back to being an exercise-a-holic.  My goal is to be back down to 150.

Good luck to everyone!
me too! so glad!

im 18 years old. the scale is fluctuating between 135-140 so i dont exactly know right now (its a new scale). Just as long as it keeps going down . i'm 5'7 ish and I want to be 125-130.

hey everyone,

I'm only a part-time student, but that still counts right? I already put in my 4, ok, 5 years and did my psych undergrad at the U of S in Saskatoon.

Had a tad bit of trouble finding work in my field so i'm now working in a totally unrelated area (economic development - boooo!) and getting my ESL certification so i can go teach english in Japanland.

I picked up a lot of my unhealthy habits from school and am trying to shake them.  so far so good.  since i have been back in BC, i have lost most of my saskatoon squish, but i still have about 10-20 lbs to go.

i have the most problems trying to figure out what to eat when i go out.  what kind of pub food do you guys eat???  do you just eat ahead of time and then only have a few drinks?

tinamkz - i don't think you're missing anything in saskatoon these days, unless you get hankerings for that prairie wind or cowboys!  hahah.

Julie
Although I don't go out that much, when I do I eat ahead of time.  I also limit that amount I drink.

I am almost jealous of all of you who had the buffet style all you can eat, because at least you have an excuse/know why you put on the weight...We have meal points, and actually pretty good food. No variety, but doable. I am a vegan so by defualt am forced to eat healthy, because in our cafeterias the only vegan stuff is hte healthy stuff.
I am blaming my 7 pound increase on ankle injury and not being able to exercise or do anything really for 6 months. And then just living with so many people who always want someone to go with them when they want to get something to eat.
Luckily when it comes to alcohol I am a lightweight, and am not a beer fan, so tend to not rack in the calories on weekends with eh, liquids involved.
I am a senior Computer Science major, sitting in front of a computer is not the best exercise I know.  Anyway I have always been overweight but just didn't care, but upon taking a health class here decided to get to a helthy size.  Did well and lost almost 30 pounds my sophomore year and kinda leveled out my junior year.  I ran 3 miles, 3 times a week.  Then the end of my junior year I broke my ankle and everything came to a dead stop.  I put back on 20 pounds over the summer due to being very inactive.  I've started to get serious again and now that my ankle is about 95% again I've began running and being active but it is hard in college and I have 1 more year to go after this current semester and will be in the dorms making it tougher.

I'm 5'10' medium build

Currently - 250 (bad, I know)

Goal - 165 (about average for my size)

Goal Date - Feb 15, 2008
What is everyone doing to get in shape??
