What color is Your banana?
Maybe i am just ocd lately, but my banana has to be just turning yellow, still a little green towards the top, with NO brown spots on it. I have to go to the grocery store every other day to get a new banana! My hubby and kids think i am nuts. I'll buy a bunch 5-6, thinking the kids will eat them too, but apparantly i have sniped at them one time too many to take an older riper one! I think i finally lost it tonight when my 10 yr old asked if he could have a banana...he came back from the kitchen 3 x to ask...can i have This one??? Ok, i have problem...but i can't stand it when they get mushy, or brown- the flavor changes!! And i can't make a decent banana loaf to save my life! oh what to do, what to do??
Do you all have food fetishes??? let's hear 'em!

Overripe - or even what most people consider ripe = HORRID!
What I have discovered: people are very particular about how they eat bananas!
They have to have a green tinge and NO brown spots. Basically as soon as they are peelable they are only good for about 2 days max after that (if left on the counter not in the fridge) - I even have a Banana Guard for protecting my bananas from brown spots and bumps in my lunch or purse while travelling! (Don't begin to ask me what kind of comments I get from coworkers who see this contraption... and yes... usually their minds are in the gutter... )
Past the just turned yellow but peelable stage - I wait for them to go to super brown mush before I will bake with them.
Here is the easiest banana muffin recipe ever!
Another key to making your baking more moist (big issue with most bakers) is to make sure you don't OVERBAKE things - leaving things in too long will dry any recipe out! Keep in mind that things will continue to bake a little after they are removed from the oven!
if i eat a banana on its own, as a snack, i like it best when it has a nice yellow colour all over. but i also don't mind them getting brown spots, because they get softer and that's the best texture for oatmeal in my opinion. and oatmeal or warm muesli with a banana is my everyday breakfast. love it!
I refuse to eat bananas that are under-ripe. They taste like plants and are too firm! I love when they are ripe- or better yet- over ripe! So sweet and flavorful :) Yum yum
I don't like them with green, some brown is ok, but once the banana starts to get mushy I throw it in the freezer. I'll use it for smoothies with other frozen fruit (you don't need as much Ice when the fruit is all frozen just add a bit of water instead).
Also, a yummy treat I've discovered is caramel rice cakes with a little Better 'n Peanut Butter, some slices of frozen banana, and some fat free Reddi-whip on top :) a few mini marshmallows too if I'm feeling like extra sugar lol.
I don't like ripe bananas either - kawnd11 you should put them straight into the fridge. Their skins turn black pretty quickly but the inside is still firm and brown-spot-less!
I like my bananas when they're starting to get brown spots on them, but they're still firm.
I like my bananas the same way as you, kawnd11. I just had one today with some peanut butter, was so yummy.

My hubby thinks I'm nuts because I will buy a bunch and stash them in different places in the kitchen...I just need to remember where I put them!
LOL I'd wonder why you're hiding the bananas too
There is nothing worse than the cloyingly sweet smell of a ripe banana. I eat them only if they are mostly green. Fortunately my husband and son eat them when they turn nasty as they do not like them at their peak of greenness. Sometimes I have to remind them that the bananas are stinking up the kitchen and I'll pitch them if they don't eat them!
Love the idea for this post!
Not all brown spotted bananas are created equal LOL. I usually want one soon after buying so I'll look for that brown spotted that from experience is 'safe' inside as being unbruised.
Talk about taking your bananas too seriously - I buy bananas in multi colors:
> yellow with brown
> yellow with green tips
> greenish yellow
> GREEN green
Since I live alone, just 5-7 total but spread out in color range giving me time to eat them with that "Todays the day theyre all ripe" pressure :D.

That is me exactly; I've never been able to palate ripe bananas. How interesting to find that others have the same taste! I might have to seek out a Banana Guard, as suggested by jef9up.
oh buying them in different "stages"- i Like that idea: but i guess if i don't eat one every day, it will throw the whole schedule off, and i will be stuck with a couple of "rotters" at the end. And peanut butter...don't even get me started on that! I can go into withdrawals without a jar of it!
