Completely Discouraged.

Quote  |  Reply

I'm completely discouraged, I started last saturday at 213.5. I got my GoWear Fit that day and have logged every bite in my mouth since then. My weight has fluctuated and a couple days ago I was 210. Well this morning I woke up and weighed myself and I'm back at 213.5. I know my weight fluctuates, but it should have gone down 1.5lbs by now. This is the total from Saturday-Thursday.

Saturday: ATE: 1338 BURNED:2443 DEFICIT: 1105
Sunday:ATE: 1542 BURNED: 2615 DEFICIT: 1073
Monday:ATE: 1285 BURNED: 2460 DEFICIT:1175
Tuesday:ATE: 2179 BURNED: 2250 DEFICIT: 71
Wednesday:ATE: 1368 BURNED: 2211 DEFICIT: 843
Thursday:ATE: 1260 BURNED: 2240 DEFICIT: 980

TOTAL DEFICIT: 5247 = 1.5 Pounds
Starting Weight: 213.5
Weight Today: 213.5

I don't understand what is going on. Its completely discouraging to make sure I have a deficit every day and still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm eating the ammount my Doctor told me to and I'm not sure what else to do. I can exercise but I have been trying to make sure that I have a good hold on the diet before I start exercising as I have a habit of jumping into everything then getting frustrated and stopping a month later.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or words of wisdom, Thanks in Advance.

What kinds of foods are you consuming?
Are you eating for nutritional needs? or just for caloric needs?
How old are you?

You should not worry about it.  I have a question for you though, did you weigh yourself at the exact same time of the day?  This is a practice you should use, because at different times in the day your body will weigh different amounts.  Also, your initial weight reading might have been after you have used the restroom, hence you would not have a very high water weight.  Now if you weighed today without the same situation, you will have to take into account water weight.  The water weight of anybody can fluctuate your reading up to 3 or 4 pounds, so I would not be worried.

I'm eating mostly whole foods, lots of veggies. I had a little brown rice today and yesterday but otherwise I try to get all my carbs from veggies. I'm eating for nutrtional needs and taking vitamins for any deficiancies I might wind up with. I'm 21.

I weigh myself every day between 7:30 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. before I've eaten and after I've used the rest room. Thanks for the replies.

Keep up the good work! You only just started, so cut yourself some slack.

First. Your daily deficits are too high. Try to keep the deficits closer to the 700 mark rather than 1000. I didn't check your age, but you may not be eating enough on certain days. I went from 293 to 190 by eating about 1700 calories a day and exercising.

Second. A LOT of things can affect your weight. It can fluctuate as much as 8 pounds for me, depending on what I eat and when. For example, lets say you weigh yourself first thing in the morning. If you eat a heavy snack or even drink some water in the evening before your weigh-in, the scale will go up. But it certainly doesn't mean that you've gained fat.

This is why I like to weigh myself everyday, even after junk meals, so that I know how my weight fluctuates. This way I don't panic when the numbers go up.

Good luck!

Like I said I've been eating the ammount my Doctor told me to. I was eating 1500 a day and wasn't losing and she told me to go down to 1200 and to try and keep a deficit of about 1,000 per day and see how it goes.

Another question, what did the tools here say that your calorie intake should be?

Just asking because I grew up with the 1200 calorie thing.  When I came here I starting eating 2000 calories and low and behold it worked.  The people that told me 1200 calories was my max had lied to me.

The tool here told me to eat 1400 a day and I also wasn't losing weight on that.

How are your calcium, protein, carbs and fat intakes on your analysis?

My calcium was really low so I started taking a supplement for that. For the last 7 Days The average per day has been

86g protein, 66g carbohydrates, 64g Fat, 485mg Calcium

I usually try to keep my protein high and my carbs fall wherever they do (like I said I try to get all my carbs from veggies and some fruit.) as thats the only way I have ever been able to lose anything. If I eat pretty much any bread I find that I don't lose weight no matter what I try. Most of my Fat comes from eggs in the morning (1-2 eggs).

There has been recent findings that calcium and healthy fats can help with releasing fat stores.

If you are taking a calcium supplement you need to take a magnesiumsupplement as well.  They work in conjunction with each other.  Not sure if it is the citrate one, will have to check.

Do you like yogurt?  It is a great source of calcium.  Also in my profile is a link to non dairy calcium sources.

Also if you just started on Saturday, it may take a month to notice a difference.

You may not want to hear this but your deficit might be to high.  For the next week try a 500 calorie deficit and consume your 1500 calorie intake.

Weigh yourself at the end of the week, no peeking.

Sometimes it takes your body a bit of time to get use to the new lifestyle.  It might say what is going on here, she wants me to lose my store of fat, WTF?  If she doesn't get what she wants she will give up and give me the foods that I am use to.  Our bodies can change, but they will put up a fight to see if you give in before your body does.

Keep up the healthy eating and your body will reward you.  It just might takes some time.  Think positive, enjoy the journey.

Thanks, I'm taking a Multi Vitamin and the Calcium supplement, I don't know if it has Magnesium but I will check. I'm not much of a fan of yogurt but I do like cottage cheese.

I'll bump up to 1500 tonight and see if that helps, Thanks again for the advice!

Everyone is different and releases fat cells at their own pace.  Somethimes it takes longer than it will with other members.  Just keep with it.

Are you dealing with thyroid or diabetes or any other medical issues?  These might need different advice that would be given by a dietitian.

No I just got all the tests done last week and got results today, everythings normal.

Are you on your period? My weight can increase as much as 4lbs when I'm on my period. As soon as it's over, my weight immediately drops.

Don't get discouraged, though!!!

Don't give up! I'm a personal trainer, and I've seen this happen over and over again. You are doing a great job, but a week is often not enough for your body to understand that it's supposed to let go of the weight.

I like the suggestion that you try for a 500-700 calorie deficit every day, at least for the next week.  It might help convince your system that it's okay to start letting go of some fat cells.

Also, it's normal for your weight to fluctuate up to 2-8 pounds per day, depending on your body fat percentage.

Keep doing what you're doing, and you will see the weight come off--especially when you begin to add in activity. One little word of warning, though: be aware that if you cut out too many carbs now, you are pretty much guaranteed to gain weight back if you ever start eating them again. Any diet that cuts out an entire food group is unsustainable. Plus, carbs are your main source of energy, not just for physical activity, but for your brain and central nervous system as well. Cutting back too much can really mess with your metabolism.  Keep your carbs unrefined (as in whole grains and brown rice), but make sure to get at least one serving a day.

Good luck, and keep up the hard work!

Teresta, this may sound silly but you didn't mention water. It is my biggest downfall when it comes to losing weight. When I don't get the minimum amout required for my age, height, weight (6 liters) I don't lose. But when I do drink it, I usually show a loss. Keep working on it, we are both still early in the game and it takes lots of baby steps to change eating/exercise habits.

Good Luck

My advice would be to not way yourself everyday.  I weigh myself about once every two weeks to once a month.

Speaking from experience, if your looking to lose a large amount of weight (like more than 10lbs), I think this is important to look for long-term weight loss.  Weighing yourself everyday may be helpful if your on the "lose-five-pounds-in-a-weekend" diets, but real diets take time to work, and you have to be patient.

Thanks for the replies, jcl  No I am not on my period, I wont be on it for another week. sarah I'm not trying to cut out carbs completely I'm just trying to get most of them from veggies or fruit, but I do usually wind up with at least 1 serving of a bread or grain a day, I was worried about diabetes until i got my results. leslazz I actually probably could drink more water, I'm pretty bad about it. I usually have crystal light lemonade but haven't had much lately. green i should stop weighing myself every day but its become a habit, I'll have to have my fiance' hide the scale.

Thanks again for the advice everyone!
