No Compromise: The Bank Bustin' Foods You Love

Quote  |  Reply

Well, as I was perusing the isles of a "local" grocery store, I found myself picking items up, considering the price, and placing the item back on the shelf. Some foods are worth the indulgence in their non- sale price. However, there are some foods that I would continue to buy, their price completely irrelevent to me.

What are your favourite foods that you can't resist splurging on? Do you buy them every week- when they're not on sale? What foods aren't worth the compromise of a different brand or waiting until they're on sale? What do you just have to have!?

I'm hooked on fancy cheeses even though they're 8 dollars or so for a small wedge. I buy them about once a month.

Certain foods I definitely shop by brand name.  Bonne Maman cherry preserves, King Oscar 2 layer sardines, Koeze peanut butter, President brie/camembert/feta. That means that I'm always in the market for some when they go on sale.

Almond butter and nuts in general

tenderloin steaks, at $15.99/kg.  but i buy the little 70-80g ones that nobody else wants.  it's like taking home orphans, really.

Way to save the orphans pgeorgian. That's so cute.

I realized I didn't share! I HAVE to buy 100g fat- free yogurt bundles. They're 6-7 dollars, but I can't live without silhouette, finesse etc.

Eggs and meat from free range/pasture raised chicken from my local co-op.  They're about twice the price of conventional store bought.

Real maple syrup.

Lundberg farms brown rice "mixes"

Jalepeno tortilla chips

Mary's Gone Crackers

King Arthur flours.

Basically, I'm a food snob.  Embarassed

These are so good!

Honestly, I spend a lot of money on groceries per week because I care about quality & I'm loyal to certain brands. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have kids and I have to actually budget!

My list:

Pure maple syrup/agave nectar

Bob's Red Mill brand products, especially quinoa (as opposed to cheaper bulk quinoa)

Organic apples, pears, dark greens, carrots, lemons, limes, etc.

Organic yogurt.

Organic raisins/dried cranberries

Free range omega 3 eggs

Best quality real vanilla extract

Greens+ powder

Bulk nuts at my local organic food store

These raw food vegan desserts... they're like $8 each for a small piece but because they're made of mostly nuts, I cut it into 4's & eat them sparingly.

So many things...

  1. Naturally More PB, Almond Breeze, Oscar Mayer 97% fat free hot dogs, Snapple, Walden Farms maple syrup (not crazy about other WF products, but I gotta have the pancake syrup), Butterball thin & crispy turkey bacon, FiberOne bars, Danon Light n Fit yogurt (but it's only like 60 cents for one of them), a certain brand of low fat whole wheat tortillas that are only like 75 calories. I think that's really it...also the light bread, but it's store brand and always on sale (but if they raised the price I'd continue to buy it). Lots of other stuff I can handle the generic brand or whatever's on sale.

Chocolate.  Need the gourment kinds since they taste so much better :D

I need to start doing it with cheese since the regular doesn't cut it for me anymore lol.

pgeorgian, our butcher calls them tenderloin tails - the little tapered pieces left at the end of the cut.  They can be as big as half a pound but are usually a lot smaller. Good either on the grill or sliced thin for stir fry.

Forgot about the vanilla extract....Nielsen Massey....

Chocolate.  I must have two nice dark chocolate bars a week for snacking on tiny square at a time.  My favorites are Green&Blacks (especially their Maya Gold).  I am much happier person when I have access to chocolate.

Organic apples, they always taste significantly better than regular ones.

Real maple syrup (as many have stated)

Cheese of any kind.

La Tortilla Factory low-carb tortillas

Lunch meat

Soy cheese

Morning Star and Boca products

Kashi frozen pizzas

Total cereal

Almonds

Dried fruit

Jell-o Sugar-free pudding cups

I love these products and luckily all my other must-haves are usually on sale.

Better n butter! It's like 5 bucks a jar! But I love it!

it seems like most of what i buy i'd get whether it was on sale or not!  i usually luck out and like 2 or 3 of these are on sale when i go shopping.  it's all stuff i eat pretty much every day.

*apples
*hillshire farms ham and turkey lunch meat
*sliced cheddar and colby jack cheeses
*fresh baby carrots
*yoplait light
*cheerios (i stock up when it's on sale, but i'd buy it if i needed it and it was regular price)
*skim milk

I agree with Mars on La Tortilla Factory wraps, espec. the tomato and basil one.

Lunch Meat, specific Boars Head(no nitrates or MSG)

Jenni-o turkey burgers

Haagan Daz sorbet

Jello sugar free pudding(only at Target since my store only has chocolate)

Fresh fruit

Amy's frozen pasta dishes

White cheese(any kind, allergic to yellow dye) but love baby swiss, provolone and sharp white cheddar

Dannon fat free plain yogurt(big container)

Lean chicken and turkey(white meat and skinless only)

Anything without artificial sweetners(xcept Splenda) preservatives, MSG and Nitrates( always cost more)

And Trader Joes Sunflower Seed Butter!!

I'm a pretty uppity food snob, when it all comes down to it.  But I find that I usually spend about the same as most people on food.  I just don't buy pre-packaged, processed foods, especially snack foods, which tend to be way overpriced.  Instead, I get the fancy cheeses, fancy olives, fancy chocolate, organic produce, free range organic eggs and dairy, and all the other good things in life.  Who needs potato chips when you can have nicoise olives?

Almond butter. I can usually go awhile just using peanut butter but eventually I cave!

Fresh fruit

Pepperidge Farm Honey Flax or Oatmeal bread (if I'm going to a grocery store that doesn't have fresh baked bread!), it's usually at least $1 more than all the other kinds...

Fig preserves of any kind, but all kinds are expensive!

Kettle Chips (not the Lay's version!), they're the only kind of potato chips I'll buy a whole big bag of.

Greek yogurt!

Cracklin' Oat Bran or Kashi Go Lean Crunch. Mmmm.

I thought of another one: I'm always buying Royal Gala apples- Macintosh, Granny, Golden? Pffft, PUH-lease. I'll dish out the gold for Royal Galas, everytime.

I have to have my Chavrie goat cheese spread for rice cakes. Its so lovely. Other specialty cheeses also, like a nice Irish aged Cheddar. MMMM

Peanut butter, off brand does not cut it.

at least 75% cocao dark chocolate. I like Ghardirelli (sp?)

Back to Nature granola cereals.

Raspberries, Blackberries...can't live without them

Dried bolton cherries, to die for...seriously!!

Big bag of whole almonds
