No Compromise: The Bank Bustin' Foods You Love

Quote  |  Reply

Well, as I was perusing the isles of a "local" grocery store, I found myself picking items up, considering the price, and placing the item back on the shelf. Some foods are worth the indulgence in their non- sale price. However, there are some foods that I would continue to buy, their price completely irrelevent to me.

What are your favourite foods that you can't resist splurging on? Do you buy them every week- when they're not on sale? What foods aren't worth the compromise of a different brand or waiting until they're on sale? What do you just have to have!?

I always buy decent chocolate, Green and Blacks for an everyday treat, Hotel Chocolat for special occassions.

I always buy branded canned tuna, I've had bad experiences with off brands.

Organic/free range chicken breasts

Tofu (it's expensive where I live)

~Greek yogurt (particularly Fage 2%)

~Raw almonds

~PB&CO Peanut Butters/ natural PBs in general

~Bear Naked granolas, Dorset muesli, Ezekial bread

Champagne and red wine... love it so much and I refuse to buy cheap kinds because I am a wine snob :( luckily i've cut back on consumption thanks to CC.

Santa cruz organic natural peanut butter mmmm

wild salmon

organic produce

and i'm with daisybella on the Green and Blacks dark chocolate but i only buy it once every 2 weeks

Tumaro's whole grain tortillas

real paremesan

Smart Balance Lite

Arnold's Flax and Fiber bread (although i'm so happy -- I found a cheaper substitute called Healthy Life omega)

Skinny Cow ice cream bars

beef sirloin (but i only buy it like once a month)

Most Lightlife products like tofu pups, lunch meats, veggie pepperoni's (they hardley ever go on sale)
Veggie Galaxy Jalapeno Cheese
Quorn Chik Patties
8th Continent Light Soy Milk
SF Jell-o's
Fat free whip cream
Greek Yogurts (One of the major brands is usually on sale but its still at least 1.59 a container)

Taking home the orphans and eating them? Surprised LOL  Very Grimm's fairy tales.

dried blueberries

err like 8$ for 1-2cups

- Salmon (Fresh from Whole Foods) = buy every week/when I run out = currently $11 to $13 dollars per pound --- This is for their Farm Raised Version... I don't even look at their King Salmon because it's $24 a pound (just as much as the chilean sea bass)

- Chilean Sea Bass (Maybe Once a Month)

- Sashimi (Fresh from Whole Foods) =buy when I run out

- Some Prepared Foods at Whole Foods... Including the salad bar which is $7.99 per pound, and I typically get about a 3 pound salad!!! (Those Cherry Tomatoes & Artichoke Hearts RACK up the weight for sure!)

- Seaweed = buy every week

- Valley Fresh Egg Whites = DELICIOUS! Currently there is a coupon going around that takes $2 off for 2 cartons! I gotta stock up before the coupon expires!

- All my vitamins from Life Extension

- Vital Choice Seafood (Their canned seafood is BOMB! - So is their Sable Fish!)

YES on the TJ's sunflower seed butter, but I only buy it like twice a year since I can eat the entire jar in roughly 12-24 hours (I wish I were exaggerating).

Organic produce

blueberries

Kombucha tea (this is so pricey, it really hurts to buy, but I have to have it! I've gotta start brewing my own...)

High-quality vitamins/supplements

Organic Avocados!

They're worth it in price & calories! :)

I can wait until most things go on sale, but some things are sold so rarely, that i'll grab them up no matter the price.

Pomegranates, anyone?  about $2-3 per piece, but oh so worth it!

Zefir - you totally have to be from the former USSR to know what these are, but man oh man, I can't resist them even if they are about $5 per half pound.

  • Ezekiel sprouted grain bread and pita pockets (the best!)
  • Almond butter and nuts in general
  • Bell peppers
  • Greek yogurt (every day)
  • Nancy's cultured cottage cheese (occasionally)
  • Good, fresh fish
  • REAL cheese

Stonemill sprouted 12 grain bread

Salmon and other fresh fish

Real  maple syrup

Organic milk

Organic yogurt

Tenderloin

Organic, 85% cocoa chocolate (the price keeps me from eating too much of it!)

Fresh veggies and fruit - never canned or frozen (only frozen berries if they're not in season)

Pure "just peanuts" organic PB

...slowly we're making our way towards a predominantly organic diet.  Will get easier with the farmer's coop this spring and summer!

Deli turkey - fresh sliced rather than pre-packaged

Blackberries - maybe once a month when they're not on sale

Ciabatta or sourdough bread - I typically buy a fresh loaf, then slice and toss it in the freezer when I get home

Fresh salad greens, mushrooms, and tomatoe

Lean ground turkey

Fiber one cereal/bar

Occasionally I'll shell out for some good mozzarella cheese, cherries or other expensive fruit

I've actually found that budgeting makes it much easier to avoid junk food...after I've gotten my staples, I'm reluctant to spend more on unhealthy snacks, etc

This snack is expensive AND not good for me but I could never cut them outta my diet completely (though I try and hold back!) - a caramel frappaccino (light version of course!) from starbucks...sooo delicious....and for what you're getting it's not toooo high cal haha...(that's what I tell myself anyway!)
