i'm a little worried about the health of one of my best male friends. he smokes, never exercises, eats fastfood at LEAST every other day, and just eats alot of junkfood in general.

both of his parents are morbidly obese (they're both at least 300 lbs, if not more), but my friend is only 10 lbs overweight so he feels that he doesn't need to lose weight or care about his health. if he maintained that weight (i don't know how he would though), would he still be overweight enough to have health problems later in life?

i know i can't convince him to quit smoking or exercise more, but is there anything i can do to help him eat better without seeming snobby?

I would suggest telling him that you want to get into shape but you need somebody to motivate you. Then he will come with you when you exercise or go biking etc. That way you are not saying that he has a problem directly but you get to tone up and he gets to feel good while exercising. Then once he starts to enjoy exercising then whenever you eat together cook something yourself that tastes really good but is not fast food and is low in calories without him knowing about it.

good luck

to you

There's not really very much you can do.  There's plenty of information about healthy eating out in circulation even if his parents weren't living proof and a dire warning.  Smoking kills... it says so on every packet.  And by far the biggest hurdle is that the young male human being is endowed with immortality... at least in his eyes.  Smile  Doctors are constantly telling young men (and women for that matter)... 'stop smoking, drink less alcohol and start eating more fruit and veg' and they are ignored, or dismissed as killjoys or cranks.  But if you want to get involved go in with a straight message, say it once and then leave him be.  He may think 'live fast, die young' is a good plan.  Best of luck!
