I have had several abnormal paps starting back in 2004. The gyne I used to go to kept saying its just mild and will eventually go away. I went to a new dr for insurance reasons, pap came back mild dysplasia again and they want me to come in and talk to dr about further treatment like a cone biopsy. Im so scared...anyone go through this? I been reading up on it and think I wouldnt mind Leep as much, because I dont have to go into the hospital and its just local anestesia. Please help!

i don't exactly know what a cone biopsy is, but I did have displasia. The biopsy made you feel like you had monthly cramps but that was about it. I had cryo surgery-freezing of the cells. It was painful, but it only lasts a few minutes and you feel really strange (like fainting) because the cervix is cranky. After about an hour or so I was ok. With the cryo surgery there is no anestesia. Both my sisters had the leep and that is much more invasive than the cryo.
After my cryo I had to be tested every few months, until a year passed with good paps. It all worked out and I have been fine for geez, 12 years.
It is ok, displasia is very common. I was really scared at first, but as I talked to people I realized that just about all the ladies had a similar procedure.

Thank you. Cone biopsy is where they actually cut a cone shape out of your cervix with either a knife/laser or wirelike thing that is connected to some electric machine to cut your cervix (leep)
I had the Cone Biopsy done, with no anestesia and no hospitalization. I felt like I was going to pass out and had severe cramping. Make sure you take some pain reliever before you go for the procedure so that you'll be ready for the pain. I've had the biopsy a couple times. You live. Just relax. I kept trying to make jokes last time and it helped a lot. But I combat nerves with humor.
I too had the Cryo and that was also faint-worthy. I've been Cryo'ed twice, and asked my doctor if we could do something more aggressive (cervical cancer) but she's afraid of the affect on my fertility (I'm 24, no kids). Bummer. Looks like I'll just have to keep doing it until I pop out a kid!

im surprised they did cone biopsy without anestesia. I have had several colposcopys, they dont use anestesia for that. I was ok with those.
Im 26 with one child...I want more kids...I dont wnat this to affect my chances of having another child.
How long did you bleed after the cone biopsy?

Maybe I'm confused and they just did Colposcopies. Yeah, I think that's it.
I bled a few days, maybe a week, but the worst part is this stuff they use to stop the bleeding on your cervix. It clots everything and takes forever to discharge (sorry, that's absolutely the most disgusting thing I've ever said on a forum). I found it disturbing and threw up the first time a clot passed.

That was funny!
I do have one question though. If your displasia is "mild" why are they skipping all the way to the Cone? Why not just the Cryo?
My sister's was more serious and required the Cone and I do believe she had anestesia and was in the hospital. The Cryo they do in the office.

crzymom: I have a pre-op on the 8th of August to discuss it further in deal with the dr. From my understanding Cryo is only for small areas of abnormal cells and is less effective than the cone. I guess Ill find out exactly what he recommends in August, but I just wanted some input now because cone was what was mentioned over the telephone with the physicans assistant. This whole thing has me so stressed! :(
I had a cone biopsy using the Leep procedure. The only part that hurt was some pinched skin in the speculum, and it hurt a lot. The doctor inserted it a little roughly, I thought, and I don't think I've ever been cracked open that wide before. The actual removal of the cone section out of my cervix didn't hurt at all. All in all a not great experience. Since then I've had one good pap and two with polyps that had to be removed. Due for my fourth one in August and then hopefully only twice a year until I'm clear for two years in a row. Was it worth it? The cone had 100% effective removal, with clean edges. It hurt a little (cramping) for about a month or two after, then stopped. At the time, nerve wracking and scary, but couldn't leave those abnormal cells up there.
I don't know if it's the same, but I've had two ????scopies done. Dont remeber the word. The first doc was a quack, and I could not walk for days, let's not speak about having sex or anything. The second doc was fantastic, and it was more or less ( a nit more) like a pap.
Check the doc's credentials. INvest!!!!!!! ( the first doc was this frustrated old geezer from the NHS::::::: yuck)

Hi everyone, hope you are all well.. just wanted to make a few comments on this topic. I am a single mum of 3 and im 36 years old, always had good smear results that was until recently! two came back as abnormal/borderline changes which worried me. My doc referred me to Colopscopy for further examination. During the examination i was told that they couldn't do a biopsy there and then as they couldn't see the upper limit of the abnormal area and if they had tried to remove it i would bleed, so was advised to have a cone biopsy. I was so worried about this procedure and decided to check it out on google as i knew nothing about it. My doc gave me some advice but they are never too specific i find so decided to find out for myself. I went into hospital on wednesday for my operation and have to say it was a breeze. I really dont know what i was worrying about. I spoke to the surgeon before the op and he told me that if anything they were overtreating me? The anethetist was great, i told him i was worried about possible pain afterwards and he gave me some pain killers before the operation. When i woke up i was absoultely fine that is, no cramps and hardly any bleeding, just a little groggy. However, i have to wait upto 6 weeks for results! hell, why does it take so long? Now im going to worry about that for the rest of the holidays. I spoke to the nurse a moment ago and she assured me that i really should not worry about it. any comments please?
Toughjourney, how are you doing????? I hope you are recovering from whatever procedure you had to endure and that all is well with you.
