I have a confession to make...

Quote  |  Reply

Lately I've been craving a burger reeeallly badly. I even have dreams about it sometimes. Its not hard to resist, I just remind myself of the poor innocent cow that the burger used to be. But its still kind of annoying when I have dreams about eating meat, or when I'm making a double meat sub for someone at work (I work at Subway. Everyone there is vegetarian because its run by a Hindu family, isn't that funny?) and I smell the pepperoni smell and I want it. >.< I SHALL NOT break my two and a half year streak!

Does anyone else ever have this problem? Just so I can feel a little better about myself, lol.

i'm a vegetarian as well but i think it's rude to post things like this "poor innocent cow" when there are omnivores on CC who might look at your post because they don't know it's vegetarian related. try to be sensitive and not impose your beliefs on others. If you want to eat meat then eat it...who told you you can't? you can have a healthy diet and incorporate meat into it. so, if you want to introduce these things then by all means do. you could even have a day where you have pepperoni pizza instead of just cheese or you have a grilled ham and cheese instead of a grilled cheese. maybe one day a week if that's something you want. you shouldn't feel bad for wanting something.

Not saying this is the case for you, but after I went vegetarian (lo, those many years ago), I started having burger cravings.  My husband took me out for a veggie burger and I discovered that what I wanted was the condiments - the bun, the onion and especially the ketchup.

And I'm also thinking that if the omnivores are truly offended by vegetarians worrying about the innocent cows, they'll be able to take care of themselves and post their own outrage.

I apoligize if I offended anyone...although it is the vegetarian forum...

The funny thing is, before I became vegetarian I never even liked burgers...

dana---ignore chrissy, your not imposing your beliefs on anyone--just stating your own opinion....I think the dreams/cravings etc. are all normal...I agree with meg---try having a veggie burger with all the condiments and see how that taste...???

lol i do have veggie burgers wtih all the condiments. or if i can't get a veggie burger just the bun and condiments. its just that lately i've been feeling slightly disturbed by these cravings. and thanks for standing up for me I appreciate it. I mean...it is a vegetarian forum isn't it?

lol Yes it is a vegetarian forum and first of all it is a forum----where people are here to voice their opinons--but then there are dumb people that just need to be ignored sometimes--

bootser...you are the rudest person i've ever encountered. if you think i'm DUMB you're entitled to your own opinion. i thought i stated my concern in a respectable manner. i did not notice it was the vegetarian forum..so i apologize..i was wrong. but that does not give you BOOTSER just reason to call me dumb...that's a bit over the top. i respond to every forum equally if i notice there is someone who has a concern that has yet to be addressed. i try to help people, hence the reason why i didn't leave my post with the main message being that she may have offended people. so some people need to grow up!

I'm really sorry, I didn't want you to get upset. You aren't dumb, it was a mistake. Cry I'm sure booster didn't mean anything either, just trying to be funny and make me laugh. I appreciate you trying to be helpful to me.

thank you dana...that means a lot that you were willing to reconcile things. btw...burger king makes a veggie burger...so that could really curtail or satisfy your yearning for a hamburger, especially if you go all out and have fries...it's like the total experience..lol. but that would have to be a cheat day or something. i'm not sure what your goals are exactly but yeah. they make a pretty good one!

As a seasoned omnivore it really doesn't bother me what vegetarians call a burger or what went in the burger. If it bothered me i wouldn't be an omnivore. ;)

I have been a vegetarian for 4 years now, and have never gone as far as to have dreams about eating meat, but no one else in my family (including my husband) has gone veg.  There are times when he brings home bbq chicken wings for himself or makes beef brisket that I will think "dang, that smells amazing!" but it always stops there.  I just remember why I am doing it.  If you are veg for animal rights reasons, one thing that you might think about is if you would be willing to eat farm raised, mercifully killed meat if you absolutely can't resist a craving.  Check with a local health food store-- they should be able to give you some resources for local people who raise their animals with love and care (also no articificial hormones, unclean conditions, or crap food) and make sure that they have a happy life before killing them in a completely humane, painless manner rather than the way that animals are treated in factory farms and slaughterhouses.  Alot of animal rights veg individuals will make an exception for this form of "organic" meat. Maybe you could get your family switched over to this kind of meat (even though it is a bit more expensive) so that you can enjoy a burger with them every now and then.  Only you can decide if it is right for you or not, you know why you did this and what your committments are. Just be careful-- if you haven't eaten meat in years and then scarf down a burger, you may have a pretty upset stomach for a few hours.  :)

Danaofdoom - if it makes you feel any better...I've been a vegetarian for 6 years and ate a chicken nugget last night!  LOL  It's all ok - we're humans and women which means we can make mistakes and change our minds at any time.  I've been thinking about going back to eating meat lately for personal reasons.  I originally stopped eating beef because I couldn't digest it and then just decided to give up everything else.

I'm vegan and still have cravings for meat and dairy.  I've been craving cottage cheese - and I don't remember really liking cottage cheese when I ate dairy!

I hate most veggie burgers but I love a good vegan bun with grilled veggies and vegan mayo.

Hey Dana~

It's possible that you're craving iron or something meat has in it that you are needing in your diet.  I'm not saying you can't get this from leafy vegetables or other sources, but primarily, meat is a great source of iron.

I had a friend who was a dedicated veg for over a decade (I was one for over 6 years)..  and she started eating meat when she got pregnant.  She just craved it so much. - possibly because her body or her baby's needed something in it..

Re: the cows...  I'm not sure what the best thing to do is..  Personally, I get grass-fed, organic meat at the store.  (and an occasional burger at mickey d's)  but I really believe in "everything in moderation," as far as eating is concerned.  As far as the animals, I agree with Jessrene.  My own personal opinion is, if they are killed in a humane manner, I believe these are things God has given us to eat - as well as fish and fruit and and other things that grow on this earth.  That is only my personal belief and practice and I'm not trying to force it on anyone else, but since you were inquiring about burgers... I thought I would share.

btw - I greatly admire your die-hard attempt at doing the right thing!!!

It may be that you need a little more protein overall, not just iron necessarily.  And you don't have to go back to eating meat to get it either.  I know that some people feel that westerners get too much protein in general, but I've found that a "typical" vegetarian diet is sometimes a bit too skewed toward carbs, although we're all different in our needs.

Um, actually we're NOT all women...

Or are you separating "women" from "humans?"

Yes, I always thought that if I were ever pregnant I would eat meat. I don't know for certain whether or not being a vegetarian during pregnancy would affect the baby, so I thought I'd just do it the way its been done for thousands of years. I would never want to take that risk.

All of you have been very helpful, thank you so much! I think I may just be craving protein or iron, as pocox3 said. Or maybe just craving junk food in general.

Oh I have to reply to another thing you said. I don't necessarily disagree with meat-eating, I just have a problem with mass-producing living, feeling animals. They way they are treated really doesn't sit well with me, and I have no way of knowing for sure if a company that claims to raise their animals humanely is telling the truth. So, until I am in a position to raise my own animals, or able to find someone who does, I have decided to abstain. I would also stop eating milk and eggs, but my mom is very concerned about  my health and as long as I live in her house I'll do what I can to make her happy. She is my mom, after all.

And thank you, its not every day someone says they "admire" me, that really makes me feel awesome!

Hey Flonklar - I was just referring to me and the OP and no I was not seperating them into different categories.  Just being silly and referring to the point that women change their minds a lot which is ok to do!  Hey - men may change their minds a lot too...actually come to think of it my hubby sure does.  Wink
