Confirming the birth control Yasmin/hair loss connection

Quote  |  Reply

I would like to submit myself as a "test subject," as it were. I have been experiencing serious telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss) from my first round of Yasmin last year. I noticed my hair falling out in huge amounts about 1 month into taking the pill, so I got off after 3 months. My hair continued to fall out for about 6 months, then gradually stopped. There is some regrowth, but it's coming in very slowly.

Here's the important part: I RE-STARTED Yasmin because I needed to be back on the pill for contraceptive protection and thought maybe the hair-loss from the last time was all in my head (no pun intended). MY HAIR LOSS PROCEEDED TO RESTART AFTER A MONTH ON THE PILL and began to fall out in heavy amounts once again. This is not placebo at all. Here is the reason I can tell the difference:

When I am on the pill, I wake up to find small white follicles that have simply plucked themselves out of my head and are waiting to fall out. Even just touching my hair forces out two or three hairs by the very root. This did not occur after my body rid itself of the last bout of Yasmin.

I would just like to CONFIRM all the doubt that I, too, had about whether Yasmin causes hairloss while on the pill. INDEED - IT DOES.

Of course you meant as a possible side effect for some people right? I've been using Yasmin for 3 years and have never had a problem of any kind, including hairloss.

Well, of course it's not a necessary consequence of taking the pill. Obviously all the side effects affect people differently and some people feel no effects at all. But many people experience hair loss on the pill and are skeptical whether the connection really exists. So I think my "discovery" can be helpful for those of us searching for answers.

Yasmin did nothing but good things for me when I was on it for PCOS. It even made the extra "male" hairs that I had grow slower or some never came back. Unfortunately when I lost insurance upon turning 18 it was insanely expensive to afford ($60 a month :S) and all the hair came back! >.<

That is strange, I've never heard of anyone losing hair from the pill. I'm on Nuvaring myself, but I've still never heard of such a thing.

$60 a month?! Oh my lord! I'd just get the generic.

By the way, what is the difference between generic and the actual brand?

The generic is the same price... =/ It's the same company.

Is it really? I thought the generic was significantly cheaper?

Wait, so theres no difference? At all?

I used this. On that page is a "Medication pricing pharmacy locater" button, click that and put in your address and then it will list all the pharmacies in the area, after that put in the medication and amount and it will list what each pharmacy sells it for.

I don't know if there is an actual difference between brand name and generic. I assume there isn't because generic companies use the patent from the brand name company once patent date expires of the brand name company. If that makes any sense. o.O

Says Yasmin is $68.57

And Ocella (generic of Yasmin) is $46.81

It's cheaper but... not really "cheap". >.<;

I was pretty sure that when I was on Yasmin I was losing a LOT of hair... doesn't sound like as much as what you were, but still, quite a bit.  My husband always used to complain that I'd clog up the shower drain w/my hair and he'd say it's amazing that I wasn't bald.  When i went off the pill, I was fine and felt much better.  Now I'm on Nuvaring and I'm not having any problems with it.
