Confused about calorie intake and exercise

Quote  |  Reply

I am confused about calorie intake and exercise. How does it work? If I burn more than I eat on the burn meter does this mean I will not gain weight. I typically do 40 minutes on the treadmill at 4.1 mph and 10 minutes on the elliptical burning 150 calories and this equals a mile. I weight lift, free weights and machines in gym for 20 minutes a day. Do some stretching, leg lifts and ab work for 20 minute. This is what I do during the week.

On the weekend I do 90 minutes on the treadmill at 4.1 mph and everything else above. Except on Sunday I don't do the elliptical or extra weights at the gym. I typically eat between 1200-1600 calories a day. More or less some days. More on Friday because that is my eat what I want for dinner night. Included desert.

I feel hungry all the time pretty much. I am not sure how to calculate my calorie intake compared to my activity level.

I am kinda unsure what your question is, but I'll take a stab at an answer.

If you want to lose weight you need to burn more calories in a day than you eat.

To combat the hunger try drinking water whenever you feel the urge to eat.

The Calorie Counter program displays your day's calorie intake and your estimated calorie burn on the "My Account" tab when you log into your account. As long as your calories for the day (and you need to be really honest for this to work) are less than the burn estimate you should be burning fat.

Ok, thank you. I thought so but was not sure. Maybe someone can answer this. When I walk on the treadmill and it shows calories burned they are different than this site says. For example on my treadmill I walk at 4.1 mph for an hour and it shows 600 or 700 calories burned but when I use this site to it shows much less. What is correct?

On this site walking at a brisk pace (4.0 mph) on a level firm surface burns 429 cal/hr. Is your treadmill inclined? Maybe that's the reason it says you are burning more. Or there could be some other differences you haven't thought of.

If the treadmill and the web site are exactly equal in all ways and there's still a difference then I'd go in the middle. Everyone is different. I think that heavier people burn more cals doing the same as lighter people since they are carrying more weight. I could be wrong there but it makes sense to me! Plus there's your base line metabolism which is different for everyone. The cals/hr measurements mentioned by different sources must be some sort of average they've calculated. You can't really know for sure unless you are hooked up to all sorts of measuring machines at a doctors office.

As for the activity level, most posts about that topic which I've read suggest to set your activity level at sedentary, which logs the cals/hr you burn for just being alive, and then add activities you accomplish as you go through the day which adds the calories you've burned by doing that activity.

Also, to curb hunger, avoid processed carbs like sugar and white flour which spike the sugar in your blood and cause your body to increase insulin very quickly, which in turn drops your blood sugar very quickly and makes you feel hungry too soon after you've eaten. Proteins and complex carbs (whole grains) are good for staving off hunger since they are digested more slowly and maintain your blood sugar at a more even level.
