So confused about edamame

Quote  |  Reply

OK so I saw all the lists here for calories for edamame, but they seem to be the same whether with the shell or without...

is the 120 calories for the 1/2 cub just for the little beans themselves or with the whole grean shell thingy with the points at each end....

if its 1/2 cup with the shell it doesnt seem like that many for the amount of calories

anyone know? thanks in advance!

Since you don't eat the pod, the calorie count is for the edible contents....

No I know it counts  the edible contents only, what I mean is it makes a difference in measurement; 1/2 cup of the pod is much less than just the beans

80g (3oz) edamame beans (out of the pods) is 115cals...  So shell the bean & weigh them to get the count.

Nutrition panels on food are usually stated 'as sold' unless the manufacturer states otherwise.  However, in the case of beans in a pod it's rather like bananas or oranges in a skin... the calorie count refers to the edible contents and not the part that has to be disposed of

Ok, but if I dont have a scale and am using a cup...does it change? wow this sounds silly.....

I don't know about cups, but I have a note on my edamame tag saying that 20 of the little peas weighed about 12 grams.  So, that should help you ballpark it.

Thanks

You are not silly at all!!!  I have been asking the same question, just in the last week!  A half cup of pods produces not many "beans" and it does seem like a lot of calories for such low volume.  I even emailed the distributor - Seapoint Farms (maybe I should not use their name) and after two emails, they did not write me back either!  You can barely stuff those pods into a half cup measuring cup!

So yes, so it seems like a lot of calories for 1/2 cup pods (eating the beans only) but they are fun, and very good for us.

So is that the conclusion - 1/2 edamame, measuring in the shell, but eatng only the beans is 120 calories.  Is this right?

I found that I liked them boiled for a few minutes, rather than Microwave.  How about you?

Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one...it just seemed so high for so few beans

I always get them when I go out for japanese so some restaurants serve them hot and some cold, but I like when they are a little warm!

Maybe this will help?

Here's what you'll find in a half-cup serving of shelled edamame (or 1 1/8 cup edamame in the pods): 120 calories

Omg, thank you!!! That means I was wayyyyy overestimating the amount of calories of what I ate..I knew it seemed too much for too little, I feel much better now, thank you so much!!

My favorite way to eat them is in the pod with some soy sauce or Bragg's squirted on or if I am feeling adventurous, some Sriracha or other hot sauce.

I am so glad you clarified this!!!!  Thank you!  Great article you shared, leaf_eater!
