Confused!!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi - i am having issues with weight gain - and i do not see why it is happening. Background, suffered severe nausea and vomiting when I was pregnant for 8 months, in and out of the hospital. Went from 160 to about 135 during that time.

After my child was born - spent the next half of the year gaining sooo much weight, up to 210 -

i have been doing a strict diet and have been hiking about 3.4 miles every day, weather permit for the last 2 weeks. Got down to 204 - but keeps changing. Eating total of 1200 calories a day - and the site suggests 1600 - cant understand why I'm going from 204 to 206 constantly - and not losing anything under that

only conclusion i can draw up - is during the pregnancy lost ALOT of muscle tissue, which i may be repairing now - but its been 2 weeks and my burn far exceeds my caloric intake

any suggestions?

maybe not eating enough?...also if youre not watching what types of food youre eating then you could be retaining water as well. You also might trying different more challenging excercise getting your heart rate to at least 70% of max. This is the only way I lose weight. Id also strength train as well as you very well may have lost muscle while preggers. I know i did from being sick and unable to excercise. I started at 217 and am now around 163. Try HIIT. Its very effective for weight loss in my opinion. good luck to ya

Couple of questions:

Are you confused about why you gained so much weight after the birth of your child, or are you confused as to why you've only lost about 4 - 6 pounds the last two weeks?

Have you been drinking water? If so, how much a day?

How many times a week during the past two weeks specifically are you hiking 3 1/2 miles?

There could be a couple of reasons why you aren't losing weight as fast as you like. If you're only hiking 1 or 2 times a week, then that probably isn't enough to really affect your weight loss.

If you aren't drinking enough water, your body is probably retaining what it can. Also, if you're breast feeding and you're on such low calories, your body will actually start slowing it's calorie consumption down so that you have enough to feed your baby. Even if you aren't breastfeeding, your body might be slowing down because of the fact that you've so recently gave birth if you aren't consuming the amount of calories it needs just to function.

You might want to keep a journal of what you eat and what times. You might be eating more than you think. Five or six small, nutritious meals a day is the best way to lose weight, along with a workout program with three days of cardio and two to three days of weight lifting.

Sounds like you're not eating enough. I think going under 1500 calories a day is unwise. Your body simply isn't going to respond favourably when it thinks you're starving it. Going to cling to every ounce of energy and fat store it can. Try and get up to 2000 calories for a day or two, then cut back down to the 1600 the site recommends. Of course, assuming you are making wise choices in the quality and not just the quantity of calories. Serves no purpose if all 1600 calories are coming from snack foods and not wholesome fruits, wholegrains and vital sources of protein.

we hike generally every day - weather permititng. However, water is an issue - i really should drink more. It could be just alot of water retention

the wierd thing is even tho it shows i gained a lb on the scale (well half of one) - my pants are looser

i have been eating alot of whole grains fruits and veggies - as im diebetic - have had to cut down on alot of snack foods

ill try going to 1600 - its harder though when your eating better - to reach that!

bah -

If you are building back muscle that you lost during pregnacy or during birth (I have not had a kid so I really don't know exactly how is works) you will start out by gaining weight-muscle weight!

The best thing to do-take measurement of your body, hips, waist, arms, things, and neck. Drink more water, get a little more virgorous excercise going on and then in a few weeks measure yourself again. Only weigh your self once a week. Most people lose/gain 1-4 pounds in a day depending on when they eat, how much the drinks etc.

Enjoy your baby, drink alot of water and it sounds like you are doing great with a really go-get em approach!

If you have lost 4-6 pounds in 2 weeks, that is pretty good.  Healthy weight loss is at only abouit 1-2 pounds per week.
