Confused and Need Help, Question about Calories Burned on an Elliptical

Quote  |  Reply

I have an elliptical that I did for 60 minutes.  This is the routine that I did:

5 minutes - Level 1 resistance

5 minutes - Level 2 resistance

5 minutes - Level 3 resistance

5 minutes - Level 2 resistance

5 minutes - Level 1 resistance

3 minutes - Level 2 resistance

3 minutes - Level 3 resistance

2 minutes - Level 4 resistance

2 minutes - Level 5 resistance

1 minute - Level 6 resistance

2 minutes - Level 5 resistance

2 minutes - Level 4 resistance

3 minutes - Level 3 resistance

7 minutes - Level 2 resistance

10 minutes - Level 1 resistance

It doesn't allow me to program my height, gender, weight or anything.  It just is an elliptical that has a heart rate sensor that you have to use when your not moving the arms.  It says I burned 340 calories and went 2.45 miles during that 60 minutes.  However, when I look up light effort elliptical on CC it says I should have burned 851 calories in 60 minutes.  Which one should I go by and which one do you think is more accurate with the up and down resistance?  I appreciate any help anyone can give me on this.

I would say the calories on the machine are probably more accurate than the 851.  I am 5'1", 104 lb, 21 years old.  My machine has a weight input, and I do level one resistance for an hour at a speed that varies between 10.5 and 11 mph.  The calorie counter on my machine says I burn about 830-850 in an hour.  According to CC for elliptical at rigourous effort it says I burn only 566 calories.  Are you sure you entered your information right?  If you are only going 2.45 miles per hour, you are probably not burning 851 calories, even if you do weigh more than me.
Yes my information is inputted correctly on CC. I am 5'4" and weigh 234.4 as of today. I am 31 years old and have severe asthma so can't do rigorous effort on the elliptical at this point.  My elliptical does not allow me to put any information into it, it is just a basic elliptical with 10 programs and a resistance up to 20.  It has the arm movements and then a bar just below the display screen to monitor the heart rate. My heart rate usually runs anywhere from 180 - 200 the entire time I am working out.  This is fine because I have a resting heart rate of about 98 or so because of the medications I am on for my asthma.
Hi! I too am 5'4" and just turned 30 I weigh 184, it sounds like i have the exact same elliptical as u. Bravo on going for 60 minutes first of all! I just started with mine and have built up to 30mins throughout the day. I wish I could do 60mins. Personally I think that the shape you're in and your W&H afftects calories burned. I don't think either is very accurate(elliptical or CC). I've been going somewhere inbetween them both for calories burned. Once you're in better shape I'd go closer to the elliptical's reading.  Well I hope I helped rather than hindered! :)

CC is assuming that you are going about 8 miles in that hour.  Given that you go 2.45 miles the 340 is probably close.  I'm 5'7" 140, for instance last night I went for an hour on my elliptical went 8.25 miles and burned 855 calories, during that time my resistance was between 4-5 and my heart rate stayed between 70-85% max.  My elliptical has a chest strap and I put in height, weight, age so it is about as accurate as it can get short of testing my breathing.  A good rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile, this works for running, walking or an elliptical.

Ellipticals can kick your butt, if you can go for an hour at any speed you are doing great.  It has taken me 2 years and marathon training to get to do what I do on my elliptical.

Thanks Cfeltontufty.  I ended up logging it under what the elliptical said because I would rather have it be less than more.  My elliptical was working fine and now it isn't so I a going to have to see if I can get it fixed.  It is still under warranty because I just got it this past summer for my birthday.
