Can you provide your stats?

(Age, height, weight, activity level)

Hello!

Like UTR asked, what's your age, weight, height and activity level? Note that CC's calculator is not accurate for teenagers, either! Still, we can help you more with stats. :]

i think that's how much you need to maintain.  i think the 1500 is cuz youR'e a teen and that's teh bare minimum you need (but if you work out a lot, it should be a little more than that)

ok sorry I'm new to calorie counting too. but i if this website says i need to take in 1200 a day and i only take in let's say 1000... does that mean that i wont be losing weight as much because it's only trying to burn off 1000 instead of 1200 a day? hahaha sorry i know that sounds really stupid but I'm just ignorant to all this, i thought calories was calories and its better if you take in less calories, especially if you burn off less calories...  i don't think i take in 1200 a day right now so if i do...wouldn't that make me GAIN weight?

plz help. thanks!

There's a lot of unknowns, but the general rule of thumb is that an adult woman needs 1200 calories to lose weight.  By eating 1200 calories a day you're more likely to meet all of your nutritional needs without having to count very single macro and micro nutrient.  Men need about 300 more calories per day as their minimum due to their generally being taller on average and having more muscle mass.  Teens need another 300 over whichever minimum due to their bodies burning and consuming energy at a higher level and developing internal organs.

At the same time, you don't want to have a calorie deficit over 1,000 per day.  So if you maintain on 1500 per day and have an extra 300 calories burned through exercise you still don't want to eat less than 1200 calories.  If you maintained on 2,000 calories per day and burned an extra 300 calories from exercise you would want to eat at least 1300 unless your minimum is higher.

There are posts all over this site from members who have found that eating too little is counterproductive.  Not only do they maintain or gain weight from eating too little but they just don't feel as good.

Chon: Eating less than 1200 calories as an adult woman is counterproductive as it results in starvation mode. Which, yes, results in weight gain.

  • Dieting & Metabolism - This article explains starvation mode and why undereating is counter productive.
  • The Body Neglected - This is what happens when you undereat for an extended period of time.

However, if you are under 21 then you need a minimum of 1500 calories a day as you are still growing.

EDIT: Ah, Smwhipple got there first. xD
  • lala & sm - thank you! i never knew it was counter productive weirrrrrd but i can see how that could happen because i end up kind of binging at night which is REALLY bad and to make matters worse, carbs mostly lol. wow very informative thanks huns!

so i too was confused at first. at first i thought i was meant to eat 2200 cals (cause that's the number that was already in one of the forms) but am down at around 1200.  in account settings, all the way at the bottom,go to daily calorie intake, then hit the advice button, fill that out, then go back and fill in the number that that gives you. i had originally thought that the number already there, 2200, had changed with the info that i had filled in. nope you have to fill out another form then change it yourself....that was my problem. don't know if yours was as simple as that....
