Weight Gain

I've been told that to gain weight, 2500 calories is recommended, however I was looking up weight gain on google and came across this website:

http://nutrition.about.com/library/bl_nutriti on_guide.htm

I put in my current weight as 92 pounds, 66 inches tall, and a goal weight of 110 pounds and these were the results it gave me...

You need 1831.2 calories per day to maintain your current weight without exercise.

You need 1907.8 calories per day to reach your goal weight slowly and maintain that weight without exercise.

If you reduce your current caloric intake to 1331.2 calories per day you will lose one pound per week without exercise.

If you increase your current caloric intake to 2331.2 calories per day, you will gain one pound per week.

Exercise and Calorie Needs

If you exercise for 30 minutes each day, you may increase your caloric intake to 2024.2 calories per day and still maintain your current weight.

If you exercise for 60 minutes each day, you may increase your caloric intake to 2265.5 calories per day to maintain your current weight.

If you exercise for 30 minutes each day, you will be able to reach your goal weight with 2110 calories per day.

If you exercise for 60 minutes each day, you will be able to reach your goal weight with 2362.7 calories per day.

So even if I exercise for an hour per day, I don't need 2500?! Have I just been overeating then? Can someone please clarify??

That is true for people in the normal BMI categories who have not been undereating for periods of time.  When your body is in an underweight BMI it takes calories and nutrition to repair any damage done or to continue with internal development.

Talk to your doctor and your counselor before adjusting whatever plan they've given you.

Cazy,

This link is not for you, if you are recovering the best think to do is listening to the doctor. Most people need around 2000 to maintain if you are gaining 2500 is needed to gain 1lb per week. Slowly and safe.

Stay healthy please.

I didn't think it was accurate, and you're probably right, it's probably not for recovering ED people!

So I know you aren't really supposed to exercise a lot, but just say you do for 30 min per day, would i need to up calories to 3000-3500?

i understand that the site you went on is for normal people but im confused to as i havnt been eating 2500 and im still gaining so why do i need more h?

maybe starvation mode?? I know that concept is used a lot, but maybe....I don't understand this whole calorie thing, there's so many exceptions and rules it seems like haha

So your body has enough energy to physically recover the body and the damaged organs, if you don't give it enough, you may be able to gain weight, but the body will not realise you are serious about eating enough and won't have enough energy available to heal the damage that was caused during the ED period.

Please eat 2500 at least Smile

Crazy,

Exercise is also not for you, meaning going to a gym and doing 5 lb weights or cardio. If you walk 2 miles to work nothing you can do about that but to answer your question yes you would need 3000 calories. I am no Doctor but I would think yours told you to start at an amount of calories and than increase more calories with time your goal will always be 2,500+ calories until your health returns and your body heals.

Everyone is different and that is why in general I don't like calorie calculators. What takes one person to gain may not another. Regardless most in recovery need a lot due to it being about repair as well as gaining.
