Ever considered Karate?

I have been training in and teaching Karate for several years and even have gotten my wife involved (not yet 50, but getting closer). We both find it to be good exercise with the added benefit of learning self defense skills which are valuable no matter how old you are. I must admit it does get taxing on the body at times but it also provides good benefit to the muscles and joints if done properly. The key is to find a style that trains you to take advantage of your body type instead of expecting you to fit the mold of a twenty something athlete. Our style is RyuTe (Okinawan Kempo) and is especially suited to older adults as most of us in the association are 40+ years old and our Master, Taika Oyata, is going to turn 80 next month. If this sounds like something that interests you find a school that doesn't emphasize high kicks or sport karate and just train for the health and self defense benefits it can offer. You might be surprised how much you like it.

I know the people that do that activity love it.  It isn't for me though.

With bad knees water aerobics and walking is the best I can do esp. with this extra weight.

How hard is it on your knees or your back? Is it designed to start out slowly getting your body used to these movements or is it a program for people with few health problems?

sounds too much like excersise to me, lol. Am renting an electric treadmill and it's easy to do 3 or 4 10 minute sessions during a day. As I get fitter the sessions will probably get longer and the best part is that my couch potato family likes getting on too.
