Can constant standing harm your legs over time?
I was curious...
I am on my feet all day unless I'm sleeping or biking...along with the rare occasion of riding in a car. I stand when I'm eating and I don't sit at the computer. I tend to get butt cramp easily and my stomach doesn't always enjoy the sitting position, but my mom told me that constant standing can cause leg issues over time. Is that true? Has anybody experiences this sort of thing? Is sitting during meals beneficial to digestion? Is a period of sitting during the day best for muscle development (being a resting period)? Would standing so much have a similar affect to over training my legs? Will I ever stop asking questions? ;)
Thanks for any insight...this has been nagging me and striking curiosity at the same time. If it will be beneficial to my body, I'll try to figure out a way to sit a tad more often (a few pillows on my tush? xD).
...
I would recommend sitting for at least 10 minutes every few hours so that your legs don't give out but other than extremely strong legs, there shouldn't be any side effects.
It really depends on what you're standing on, if you move around and whether or not you have appropriate shoes. If you're standing on cement or a hard floor all day long, you're likely to experience some discomfort over time. If you're wearing crappy shoes, you're likely to experience some discomfort over time. Pay attention to your body and how it feels and see a doctor if you're experiencing pain or discomfort.
Consider sitting on a couch or in a padded chair if sitting is uncomfortable. Hard benches truly are not favored by anyone.
I rarely wear any shoes and my house doesn't have a single carpet in it do to my grandmother being confined to a wheelchair. I bike a lot and walk a lot, so my legs already kind of get a beating. Arthritis behind the knee is something runs in my family, and I fear that I am sacrificing my legs to bum and stomach comfort.
People have been evolving for millions of years to spend all day either on their feet or laying down, standing is not bad for you, sitting is.
Okie dokes...as long is it won't harm me. Thanks.:)
Standing all day increases your chances of developing varicose veins, plantar fascittis and foot/ankle problems from carrying your bodyweight all day long. Sitting on your butt 24/7 greatly raises your likelihood of getting bloodclots because it slows down your circulation to your legs. You can't win! lol Seriously, why do you want to be standing all the time - even horses and cows and other ruminent animals that can't physically lie down at all sit down for a rest for part of the day. It's best to alter your position throughout the day and not to just do the same thing all the time. If your butt hurts when you sit down becuase you have too little padding on it, sit on a fat cushion.
I really can't win! Haha...I'm getting such conflicting advice! xD
