Long of the short--I had a subtotal colectomy a little over a year ago for severe constipation...diagnosed with colonic inertia. I was fully anticipating on being somewhat constipated during pregnancy like I was with my first, but not this bad!!! I don't have most of my colon for gosh sakes!
I can't remember, does the constipation get worse? I know the third trimester can be bad b/c of the size of the baby, but what about the second tri? I need some relief here...I exercise, drink lots of water, etc.
I had some issues the first trimester but that was about it. I had the opposite problem the third trimester. ![]()
I ate a bowl of Fiber One Honey Clusters for breakfast every morning and drank hundreds of ounces of water every day. I was more regular during pregnancy than I had ever been before! The only downside to Fiber One is that it has a lot of sodium in it.
You might talk to your doctor about Colace. It's an OTC stool softner that I was prescribed after my c-section. It's NOT a laxative so it's probably safe to take but, again, check with your doc first.
The constipation was horrible in the first trimester for me. From reading all the pregnancy books I was scared it was going to get much much worse in the second and third. My doctor had me trying all sorts of things, which was pretty miserable (and none of them worked!). It's gotten so much better in the second trimester and I'm just starting the third today, so hopefully that will be okay too. Hopefully yours will get better soon - such a frustrating problem!
