Should I consume more iron while menstruating?

I usually meet my DRI for iron without too much of a struggle, but should I, at 16 years old, take extra iron supplements for the duration of my period?


Answer

There is no need to consume extra iron during your period because the DRI compensates for that.  Menstruating females require 18mg of iron a day while postmenopausal women and men need only 8mg.
