British writers:

Jill Mansell

Jane Green

Marian Keyes

Freay North

/yep, did a course on contemporary romantic fiction at uni/

I second Marian Keyes. Sushi for Beginners is my favorite, but you might also want to start with Watermelon and read that series in order.

Loooove Jane Green's early stuff (the more recent stuff hasn't been so good). Marian Keyes is incredible - but beware, her most recent book This Charming Man is excellent, but not lighthearted. Only read it if you're up for some serious serious. One of my favourites recently was The Wives of Bath by Wendy Holden (not all her books are this good though).

Other suggestions: Jennifer Weiner, Gemma Townley, Rita Ciresi.  I like Sophie Kinsella's non-Shopaholic books a lot - The Undomestic Goddess, Can You Keep A Secret.

Jane Green has become more serious, dont you think? I miss her 'old style'. My fav Keyes book is Lucy Sullivan is getting married- I laughed all the through it. Anybody out there? is also fantastic- anything with Mummy Walsh is a sure winner Laughing

You could also try Mike Gayle and Ben Elton's Inconceivable is pretty funny.

For Jane Green - I read Jemima J and Mr Maybe over and over and over again.  The books from that era were generally pretty good  - they had a "young" feel to them.  The later ones are more about women getting towards middle age, frustrated with being in the suburbs - OK, but not as fun. Second Chances was just this awful anti-terrorism angst-fest that wasn't what I think of as her style.

Marian Keyes - the only Walsh sisters one I didn't enjoy was Rachel's Holiday - too many characters to keep track of!
