Contractions 7 months later...

Quote  |  Reply

I am wondering if it is possible to continue to have contractions once in a while even 7 months after my delivery.  Latley I have been having serious hip and back pain coupled with what feels like contractions, they were particularly bad when I was breast feeding this morning.  I mean I wouldn't be upset, my hips are still pretty wide, and my belly is still impossible to suck in.  Anybody have any answers for me?

Could it be menstrual cramps, or maybe gas/constipation cramps?  I get the symptoms you describe for both.  Breastfeeding made my menstrual cramps worse.  Other than that, I don't have any ideas.

Do you remember the afterpains while still in the hospital after delivery? Those were caused in part by breastfeeding. It's possible to still be experiencing those afterpains but it could also be a sign that something is wrong.

Has your period returned? If not, maybe you're about to start your first postpartum period. My first period after breastfeeding was pretty bad in the cramp department.

I would call the doctor to be on the safe side. It could be fibroids or other uterine growths. Better to be safe than sorry, eh?

It felt just like those afterpains...but I think we have solved the mystery ladies, I did end up starting my period this morning after those cramps.  It is my 4th since the baby, I guess I was just hoping for these monster hips to go down further...to my dismay, I fear I am like this for good...I give that song "Hips don't lie" a whole new meaning! haha

Breastfeeding stimulates the release of oxytocin, which is responsible for uterine contractions. Many women complain of cramping (or increased pain) when breastfeeding.

I had that too.  My doctor told me it was very common.  As far as your hips go; sorry about that.  Frown

Yes, but the afterpains (cramping due to the uterine contractions that cause it to shrink back to size) are supposed to subside after several days. Lasting 7 months after giving birth would be a reason to seek medical advice.

Well, all I can suggest is love your new hips! When you deliver, your pelvis really spreads and sometimes it doesn't go back to the way it was. I wish I would have some hips...I wouldn't have to worry about pants that are always baggy in the butt!

my hips span from new york to california.  I'm right there with you.  Julia is 10 months and they still haven't gone back to normal.
