Controlling urges during that time of the month (girls only!)

Quote  |  Reply
So, I started my period today and yesterday I was craving poptarts really badly. I didn't eat any, but I did scarf down a broccoli & cheese hotpocket right before bed which is definitely not a good idea. Are there any tips for controlling the urge to binge while on your period?

try eating some "healthier" snacks... fruit, raw veggies..that way when u get the urge you won't feel as "guilty"... I do the same thing. I also eat popcorn to help control my hunger issues

hope this helps!

I know it's sooooo hard! I haven't binged in 2 whole months and i had really bad pms and scarfed down 300 calories of chips right before bedtime. Feeding your body something crazy that it isn't expecting is good at least once a week when you are dieting. My trainer says it actually helps as long as you don't go completely overboard. So enjoy your favorite craving once a week and don't feel guilty.

Hey, at least it had broccoli!  The Pop Tart wouldn't have had any!
As I have really strong cravings all day, every day during my TTOM, I can't really satisfy all of them with the real thing.  Instead, I try to figure out why my body is craving that particular food and find a healthier version.  Like if I was craving a pop tart, I would figure that I wanted something crispy-toasty-fruity-gooey.  I'd try to satisfy that craving with a toasted whole wheat english muffin with no sugar added preserves on it.  There are some cravings for which this doesn't work as well (a craving for a truffle can only be satisfied with a truffle!), but a lot of times my body just wants something close.
Ive actually been lucky but starting this week, Ive been ravenous and realized how bad some have it.  Actually thankful it didnt cause a binge or even a cheat, but my cals have been up coping with it.

This morning though one thing really helped - protein with no carbs for breakfast.  I know we hear it a lot about protein at breakfast but I had grilled chicken, no carbs for breakfast and it honestly made a difference I can feel.  Im not encouraging no carbs but I can say I wasnt STARVING by midmorn snack, ready for a big lunch and plan to have better carbs later today.
Ever notice that just about every female on these boards says that she gets really hungry and has cravings around her time of the month? You need to eat more. If you give yourself an extra 200 calories to work with for a couple days it won't kill your diet and it will help prevent uncontrollable eating later. If you are really hungry, EAT! Just make good choices.

I'm sharing your pain!  Mine started this morning also and then I had the nerve to be running late for work and didn't have breakfast.  I know big no no!

well while my lunch was a bit large it wasn't real bad Frown Steamfresh veggies and grilled chicken from the market. Both with too much salt, but hey.

Since lunch I've had a mini bag of popcorn and now I'm having an apple.

I try concentrating on small meals every few hours about 3.  Normally 3 main and one snack in between.  That's surely how I'm trying to make it through today and since I started the day at a deficit, I'm starving.  Just had an apple and now I have a meeting to go to after a work.  I won't eat until late.  That's not good, but I'm afraid at what I will eat if I stop somewhere.

EAT GOOD STUFF if you're going to eat.  That way you won't feel so bad.

Hang in there. You're not alone.`

A lot of times your body is telling you that it needs something for your period. Try figuring out what in the poptart your body wanted, and then replace it with something healthy. Like, if i want something fatty, i eat pb.

Man, I am totally experiencing this these last 2 days. I CANNOT STOP EATING JELLY BEANS! ... and just about everything else in site! Today I have had about 30 jelly beans, 8 kisses, a package of 6 crackers & pb PLUS what I was planning pm eating (Slim Fast, yogurt & special K, and a salad). I'm not so worried about the calories but I am definitely worried about the insane amount of sugar I've had now that CC posts it in the analysis area. 88 grams of sugar! EEK! That is horrible!

Hmm.... this seems so completely alien to me.

Ever since I got my period back, between all the cramps and the bloating and the headaches-I've completely lost my appatite.

Weird..  I wonder why this is?

I feel your pain, My aunt flow arrived this morning as well :( .  It was so weird because I too was having major cravings for sweets.  To fight the cravings though, I walked on my treadmill for a half an hour and then went and ate a reasonable dinner, I think exercise helps, or I take a warm bath, whatever takes my mind off things, I think I have such craving because I'm stressed the way it is and then to tops things off having a period, I'm surprised all hell doesn't break loose yet, haha.
i heard that your metabolism slightly increases during that time of the month. maybe that's why we have such horrible cravings and tend to eat more than normal? i'm there with you guys too...

Urgh, mine just started today too and I'm in so much pain; the cravings are also pouring on -with the mouth watering and everything! I was so hungry, I almost turned to eating meat again but I didn't -phew. Ahaha, I'm actually really happy because there are so many other girls out there that can relate too -it makes me happy to have someone to share these experiences with.

Mine is supposed to be starting any day now and I'm definitely getting the cravings. Yesterday I started out the day healthy and then all of a sudden I just NEEDED a cupcake. So, I ate one. Then had some cheese and crackers. Then some gingerale. Then another cupcake. My boyfriend came home and brought me a salad for dinner, but I was stuffed from all of the junk that I had eaten. When I told him about it he just said 'hun, you're pmsing, it's ok. Your body needs extra calories.'

It's true that you burn more calories in the days before it starts, so I think that I just have to accept that and plan for it. I'm going to make sure to eat more healthy foods throughout the day so that I don't end up filling up on empty calories.
