No-cook foods? Roaches in apt :( :( :(

Quote  |  Reply

Hey guys, I just started grad school in another state and my new apartment is apparently bug and roach infested :( I'm not used to not being able to cook, etc. but I really hate those things and want to keep them away. I know it sounds extreme but they even crawl out when I'm drinking a glass of WATER...So I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on what I can have for my meals.

So far, I've been having cereal or mini bagels in the morning, sandwiches/salad/soup/Lean Cuisine for lunch and dinner. But does anyone have more interesting ideas?

For breakfast you can do ''Swiss Oats'' (oats soaked overnight w/ milk and yogurt, add fruits/nuts in the morning)

No idea for lunch and dinner though, sorry!

EW.

I suggest releasing your anger on your landlord then moving, if at all possible.

Get a few good containers with seals to store things in, you may want to line those containers with a plastic bag as well.

Okay, so you kind of cook this but time and contact with possibly yucky surfaces is minimal.  It sounds like you use the microwave anyway.  You can lightly spray with cooking spray a microwaveable container and microwave eggs (well mixed up so they don't pop much) for an addition to any meal but especially breakfast.

Burritos with fat-free or low fat refried beans you can just keep in a tupperware type container in the fridge would be a good dinner option, everything from veggies to cheese can be prechopped and assembled as needed.

Step #1 - buy roach traps and put them everywhere you see the nasties.  Wash all surfaces frequently using a disinfectant cleaner.  Wash your dishes before you use them.

Step #2 - store everything in the refrigerator including your cereal.

Step #3 - Menu ideas that don't require much preparation -

Fast Chili - can of beans, drained.  Half a jar of salsa.  Mix together in a bowl and microwave.  Top with a little cheese or sour cream.

Sooner or later the traps will do their job and you won't see any more roaches.  It takes a while for that to happen, so be patient.

Really, your landlord should provide an exterminator once a month.

Thanks for that recipe! It sounds delicious and SUPER easy! I'll have to try it soon!

I do this all the time! If you want to- instead of sour cream, try a scoop of cottage cheese and black olives on top... soooo good :D

about this CHILI--what kind of beans+how much? sounds good!

Your landlord should get exterminators to come in.  There is a sticky, dark brown stuff that they put in the corners under cupboards that works well.

If your landlord is a bum and won't deal with this for you, go to chinatown (If there is one) and get magic or miraculous insecticide chalk.  (It is actually boric acid.)  It is very cheap.  You 'draw' it along the corners of your floors and cubboards.  My husband learned about this stuff when he worked at an abbatoir.

Edited:

I just googled this stuff to make sure of the name, and turns out the boxes of miraculous insecticide chalk are illegal because they contain a dangerous pesticide. The EPA's biggest concern, though, is that kids are going to think it is real chalk and eat it.  So if you don't have kids, and the roaches are really bad....

But, boric acid can be purchased at harware stores and you can mix it with flour to attract roaches and it really does work to get rid of them.

I haven't tried the boric acid yet but I should. So far it's been roach traps, way too much Raid all over the apartment, and sealing up a lot of the cracks I see in the walls/under the sink/etc. Also the manager sends the maintenance guy over once a week to "spray and bomb", but that only scares the roaches away for a couple days at a time. I've never lived alone in the midwest before so I didn't realize that living on the "basement" floor of an older apartment building was a very bad idea -- especially for someone who is as repulsed/scared of bugs as I am!

Thanks for all the ideas so far! I think I'll try the Swiss Oats soon. I have so much oatmeal but I'm too scared to cook it so that's perfect. And the fast chili sounds like a good way to get (cheap) protein :) I do not have a microwave in the apt and I don't plan on getting one. It works out ok cuz I spend 90% of my time at school, studying...

Don't forget about the pouches of Tuna and Salmon! Those are quick and easy and no cooking required!  Eat on a sandwich or dip like.

There are cans of chicken and turkey also that you could add to the chili if you wanted more protein!  :)

Good luck......

I would move ASAP .....   EWWWW   I hate bugs too!!!
