Correct BMI

Quote  |  Reply

Hi

I have just completed my registration but want to alter my BMI (body mass index) as the site says i am overweight for my height and mass. I am 93kg and 176cm tall. According to the website, i should be 70kgs. If like in my case you are a sportsman or athlete and have a large muscular frame, then the BMI is incorrect. How do i find a BMI for my body?

If i carry on with the the programme according to the site (for a 70kg goal) this would be incorrect for me. I would like to stay at my present weight of 93kg but get leaner in other words lose fat but maintain the muscle or add slightly more muscle.

How do i accurately use the site then??

The BMI is just a ratio of your height and weight, so you can't really make it account for your muscle.  The BMI isn't "incorrect" it simply isn't very meaningful for athletes.  But you can change your weight goal, just enter the weight that you think you would like to get down to and set up a reasonable (around 500 calorie) deficit between what you consume and how much you burn, and you will slim down to that goal.

If you want to know if you have fat to lose, you can go to a reputable gym and get a % body fat measurement.
