Costco: shopping healthy in bulk, what should i buy?

Quote  |  Reply
Going to make a trip to Costco, what are some of your favorite things to buy there? I know bars might be a good choice, but what else?

Frozen, bonesless, skinless chicken breasts.

Fresh or frozen, fruit and veggies.
I get my parents to pick up:

  • whey protein powder (waaay cheaper than health stores)
  • babybel cheeses (they're wrapped in wax, so don't go bad)
  • kashi bars
  • salmon!  It's great there, and cheap!
  • cereal: if there's one you want, get a big box that's cheaper.
  • edamame
And, if you're feeling naughty, they make a great trail mix that has M&Ms in it. ;)
When I goto Costco, I buy the giant bags of fresh broccoli florets. I take it home, blanch, and then freeze it in single-serving sized bags.

My mom likes the hummus there.
ohh, i usually by whey protein @ TJ's , the Azria kind. It's 100 cal for 2 scoops. Do they sell that there too?

laughing cow cheese.
i get the laughing cow cheese, too! also, baby spinach, small cans of tuna, salmon, strawberries, eggs, skim milk, and balance bars.
It's so much cheaper there. The three layered container costs the same as the one layered one!
Loooove Costco!  I stock up on the following:

Skinless, boneless chicken breasts - I split these up into individual portions, weigh each breast and put in ziplock freezer bags marked with date and weight.

Fresh wild salmon or halibut - Same thing, I leave one portion for dinner that night then cut and weigh all the rest, bag it and label it so I can have fish throughout the week.  (I avoid the farmed fish -- just don't trust it.  Always get fish labeled "wild" and "fresh.")

BLUEBERRIES!!  Our costco has a huge 2.75 pound container of berries for $5.99.  (Compare to those teeny containers at the grocery store for $4.)  Pop 'em in the fridge and it lasts throughout the week (I have 1/2 cup on cereal in the morning, and then another 1/2 cup mixed with whatever other fruit I have on hand as a snack.)

Raspberries - I buy an entire flat (6 containers) and do the same drill -- some on breakie in the AM and as a snack during the day.  They're not always in season but man, they're good and a great source of fiber.  I usually buy the rest of my fruit at the Farmer's market but blueberries and raspberries still taste uber fresh and the price can't be beat.

Garlic (big jar) - Since I hate to peel garlic, but like to use it in all my dinners, I just buy a big jar so it takes me 2 seconds to press it into the dinner.

Bag of greens - Different bags of greens, spinach, etc.  Good for my salads throughout the week.

Also, depending on the week, I get mushrooms, english cucumbers, other veggies -- just depending if I think I'll eat them during the week since I'm trying to eat veggies according to USDA pyramid guidelines.  Looooots of veggies for a former fast food gal!  ;o)

If you cook for 2 or more, you'll go through much more food than this and Cosco will be a godsend!
