Why cottage cheese?

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, so I keep hearing all about cottage cheese on here and I'm so confused.  This is probably really super-dumb but WHY.   It is still a cheese right?  I know you can get it with 1 percent milk or skim, but I have had the non-fat version of cheddar and it has no taste at all, I just use it to "pretend" that I'm eating cheese.  Is there something super-amazing about COTTAGE cheese nutritionally?  Or is it just more versatile?  Does the flavor not diminish when you take out the fat?

Even full fat version is low in fat and high in protein. It is also versatile, and can replace some other cheeses in recipes. Wiki to the rescue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottage_cheese

It's high in the protein Casein which is a slow digesting protein (7 hrs, compared to Whey Isolate which is fast and good for post workout when your muscles need the protein right away) and keeps you full by coating your stomach and putting pressure on it's walls. It's really good for a bedtime snack. The only downside is it's high in sodium, although there are No Salt Added ones available, but they are hard to find. (at least for me anyways)

Cottage cheese also gives you more volume for the amount of servings it has. A 1/2 cup serving of the 2% fat kind is only around 90 calories. Plus, it's yummy :p

It's high in protein, low in fat and calories, and you can mix pretty much anything in it.

Everything the above posts said is true...but also you should expand on how you're eating it. You say it has no taste - so you can buy the low fat or whole kind, but you can also add fruit or veggies to it.

I like cottage cheese and fruit cocktail. It's a satisfying snack and low in calories!

Thanks for all the responses!  I feel much more informed!
