Why does it make me nauseous? I usually eat about 1/3 to 1/2 a cup at a time, on top of delicious pumpkin flatbreads - not an extravagant serving, by any stretch. But almost every time, I feel like throwing up afterwards. Which is not normal for me at ALL.

I don't have any dairy allergies or intolerances, and I don't dislike the taste, or the texture. I mean, let's be realistic - it doesn't really have any taste, lol. So why does this flavorless, somewhat bland food that I'm not allergic to make me want to throw up after eating it? Does anybody else have any bizarre food reactions that don't make any sense?

Could it be a texture thing maybe? I know that sometimes mushy food can make me gag and give me a sort-of nauseous feeling.

I guess the easiest answer is to not eat it.

But that doesn't really help you. i can give some examples that I have that are similar. My sister likes chocolate, but will always feel sick after eating a small amount; cake, just chocolate, pudding. this is (we think) because when she was 2 (20 years ago) she had to take horrible medication, syrup, and was given a small piece of chocolate after to make her feel better.

I used to love jacket sweet potato, with cottage cheese and/ or chili sauce. I ate this several times last year when my father in law was very ill. this was a stressfull week and he passed away that week too. Now I cannot eat sweet potato anymore. I used to love it, but now it makes me feel sick.

I think lots of people have different experiences, but I know that some extremely stressfull situations can be linked to a food. My sister and I both have this. It's weird, but for me that is the reason why I can't eat something I liked and is healthy.

Sorry for the essay-style post.

If your cottage cheese is bland and flavourless then it doesn't really sound like cottage cheese..... It's usually quite salty with an sharp/acidic 'tang'.   If it doesn't agree with you that's probably a good reason to stop eating it.  I feel sick every time I eat hot-dog sausages.... haven't tried to analyse why.  Avoiding them is much simpler.

gadzooks: I don't think it's a texture thing - granted, it is kind of a unique texture, but I'm not consciously aware of disliking it.

growantree: I agree re: stressful situations and how these can sometimes lead to aversion for a particular food.  When I was a child, I had to take this one medicine quite regularly. It was supposed to be strawberry flavored, but it actually tasted horrendous - nothing like strawberries at all. It would take me literally an hour to buck up the nerve to swallow it! As a result, I can't stand strawberry milkshakes as an adult. Even though I'm sure they taste wonderful, and nothing like my revolting medicine... something about the colour and the odor just turns my stomach.

gi_jane: I guess I'm buying the wrong kind of cottage cheese! That said, I think avoidance IS the only solution. Now, if I can just figure out what to do with that giant tub of cottage cheese I purchased last week. Ceiling paint, perhaps? Smile

Now can I recommend the 'vomit scam'....?   Take your large tub of cottage cheese, mix it with some diced carrots, grated parmesan (lavish but provides the essential piquant aroma) and finely chopped tomato skins and next time you're in a restaurant/hotel room/posh shop accidentally spill some on the floor and shout very loudly.... 'OH MY GOD!!! SOMEONE THREW UP HERE & IT HASN'T BEEN CLEANED!!!!'   It's worth a good 20% discount on average.... Sealed

^lmao ahahahaha. I had to comment that is too funny!

You know, this same thing used to happen to me with yogurt. I would buy a big 6 or 12 pack of yogurt, eat them for a couple days, and then, sometimes after a day or two or even a week I would have one and be completely disgusted and gagging and throwing them away, wasting the yogurt (and the money - that stuff can be expensive!). So, I stopped eating yogurt and funnily enough, switched to cottage cheese. Now I eat cottage cheese every day but thinking about yogurt still makes me feel a little ill.

Bottom line: If eating something makes you feel sick, don't eat it! Laughing

Just pointing out the obvious, but have you checked the expiration date?

gi-jane: lol!! thanks for the tip Smile

floggingsully: wow, that would suck - eating expired cottage cheese! I would imagine it would sour, like yoghurt. Luckily, the date is fine, and I've purchased multiple tubs of the stuff over the last month. Which I'm now going to paint the ceiling with or use as payment for a room at the Hilton in NYC Wink
