Cottage Cheese???

Quote  |  Reply

So ive been seeing a few posts in which people say they mix cottage cheese in with yogurt.

Im very curious about this becuase where im from cottage cheese tends to be a savory item. Its a little salty and you can get types with chives, herbs or garlic in it. You can get the normal just cottage chesse too but it is more of a savory item than sweet.

Is cottage cheese in the united states or other countries different, is it sweet?

I buy a really nice low fat cottage cheese with pineapple, which is seriously yummy! Thats sweet enough to eat on its own and I imagine that would work well mixed in with natural yoghurt.

I've never heard of cottage cheese being mixed in with yogurt... Doesn't sound very appealing to me, frankly. Yet, I thought pineapples and cottage cheese together sounded gross- I was wrong once I tasted the combo.

If you happen to see a thread talking about PB&J and cottage cheese, don't try it! I threw it out after the first bite. Ugh!

Most of the time, I prefer my cottage cheese to be spicy- lots of hot sauce, crushed red pepper flakes and black pepper. MMM!

When I eat it (and until last week it was a long time since the last time) I generally eat plain cottage cheese without anything added. One or two large spoons of it, perhaps together with a sallad of some kind (though not mixed in) or as a small snack to tie me over if I don't feel like drinking plain milk but I want the dairy.

I have also had it in rosehip cream (I want to call it soup, but apparently that's not the right word for it in English), which is something that at least here is either something people hate or people love - it depends on if they ate it like that as children.

Personally, I think it does not sound very good at all to mix it with yoghurt, but perhaps if it's the right kind of yoghurt and not one of the flavoured ones I have to eat to not find it too sour, it works. Not something I'm going to try though, I'm afraid.

I love cottage cheese! It is on my list everytime I shop! I eat it as a snack or I have it as a meal. I like it by itself or eat it with fresh tomatoes. I like it with fruit like strawberries or cantalope.

If you google you can find a webpage with nothing but recipes for cottage cheese.

Apparently I'm some sort of weirdo.  I love cottage cheese with yogurt.  I get the 2% breakstone cc, which is a bit salty and I imagine would work great as part of a savory snack.  I mix it with dannon light n fit, sometimes with some berries added and its wonderful!

Now that sounds yummy! I am gonna try that tomorrow... I usually eat my plain or with peaches, or pineapple or fresh sliced apples.

Cottage cheese by itself isn't sweet or savory... it's just... cottage cheese. And yogurt doesn't have to be sweet, I typically eat plain yogurt which isn't sweet at all, I suppose it depends on what kind you eat and what you mix in with it if anything. I used to put cottage cheese and yogurt in my oatmeal (quaker low sugar maple spice) and it was pretty amazing.

speaking as a cottage cheeseaholic  (I eat it almost every day)...I have not had any that was sweet on it's own. I buy low-fat and love it mixed with a myriad of things or just plain.  Why ruin yummy cottage cheese OR yogurt..? but I might have to try it..who knows.?  Love it with pineapple or pears as a dessert.

yes!  lots of cracked black pepper!  salsa,  Tabasco,  splash of balsamic vinegar.

Thanks for the replies. It seems cottage cheese is the same here as it is in other countries, just people do different thing with it.

I think i will be sticking to having cottage cheese as a savor item though, i can really imagine putting it with yogurt.

Thanks again

I mix fruit in with mine, which I suppose makes it sweet :)

Thank you so much Amandief! I had a left over tub of cottage cheese in the fridge from a recipe I had tried...it was awful btw, I thought it would be because as many years as I can remember I have tried really hard to LIKE CC.

Well after reading your post, I tried it with the hot sauce, red pepper flakes and the black pepper...it was really good! I have tried it in the past with just black pepper...lots of it, and it still wasn't enough for me. For some reason this combination of heat and spice worked for me.

So, again Thanks! Carolyn

I just found this thread.  I'm a HUGE cottage cheese convert - I used to hate it!  I now eat it every single day.

I love using my cottage cheese to make all kinds of dips, salad dressings, or spice it up and top steamed veggies for a more "creamy" consistency.  I use the 1%, small curd, no salt-added kind for more versatility.  I can then use it for savory or sweet - it just tastes like...well, a very mild cheese!  I have many times mixed it with plain greek yogurt for dips.

I add things like cumin, hot sauce, chili powder, chipotle chilies & lime for mexican flavor; five spice powder, hot pepper flakes & cilantro for spicy asian; turmeric, cinnamon, cumin & curry powder for indian; dill, celery seed & apple cider vinegar for cucumber slices; cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, apple pie spice & sometimes little honey for fruits (I like to dip apple slices into this as a pre-run snack!).  Basically you can spice it up with your favorite flavors for variety.

That's a fantastic idea. I usually put it on my salads as far as veggies go but never thought about my other veggies like broccoli. Thanks for sharing!!

Haha, I'm glad I got you turned on to cc now! I tend to drink extra water when I eat that combo because of the added sodium content from the hot sauce. Just wanted to let you know if you are watching your sodium intake. :)

I second that! I loved it with the sauce, pepper flakes and pepper... It was really great! Thanks for sharing Smile

Good Lord, I LOOOOOVE cottage cheese!!! I think the smallest amount I've ever had in one sitting was three cups, lol! (But then I'm known for big portions.) I like it sweet OR savory. My favorite ways to eat it are:

-with dried basil mixed in

-with cucumber, tomato, celery, and carrot slices, some salt and pepper

-with TONS of sugar and cinnamon mixed in

-cinnamon, sugar, and frozen peaches!!! my favorite. Smile

It's also good whirred up in the food processor with dill... makes a great dip for crackers and veggies! Also makes shakes yummy and creamier. I've never tried it in yogurt before. I'll have to do that.

I had it yesterday with plain ff yogurt and a chopped up pear. yummayyyy.

I also like to put it in oatmeal with a chopped apple and lots of cinnamon, then put some granola on top. Like apple crumble!

I've also eaten it with flax and almonds, which lots of people think is gross, but it's really bomb.

Cottage cheese is delicious, more so when/if you can make it at home!

Take 4 cups of skim/1% milk and bring it to a boil. (The higher fat% milk you use, the creamier the cheese will be.) Then stir in 2-4 tbsp of lemon juice/white vinegar/leftover whey from your last batch of cheese/yogurt into the milk, stir, and heat some more until the cheese separates out, leaving a greenish whey. I do the whole thing in the microwave in a large pyrex measuring cup. Whey/yogurt gives the best flavor.

Drain out the cheese in a simple nylon mesh strainer/cheesecloth lined colander. The whey can be used in stocks/smoothies/to knead dough.

This cheese can be made both sweet or savory. I love it mixed with a couple of tbsp milk and sugar, or just with some rock salt and black pepper. I also press it for a few minutes and then use it in classic Indian recipes like palak paneer.
