What do you do with Cottage Cheese?
Ok, so I'm kinda stuck at a plateau and so it was suggested that I switch up my proteins, especially in the morning (I tend to go in ruts eating the exact same foods every day). So I thought cottage cheese might be a good 'breakfast' type food. Thing is I haven't touched the stuff since I was a kid. I think what happened is in grade school we watched a movie on how it was made and I haven't been able to look at the stuff the same. I'm still trying to convince my brain that it's protein and not really dairy. All I see is lumpy milk.
I don't think I'll have any issues with the taste itself, but there must be some healthy, not so over board ways to jazz it up some. I got the Kemps Fat free small kurd... I'm not looking for an elaborate recipe or anything, but what goes with cottage cheese? Any suggestions?
...next challenge, find a non-bread/starch vehicle for peanut butter...

That one's easy - celery!
I love peanut butter on celery with raisins on top - my mommy used to make it for me and she called it "Ants on a Log". Yum!

I don't eat cottage cheese but a few backs this was discussed on here. If you do a forum search you can find it and see what everone came up with. Some sounded really great, like adding it to an omelete.
I put my peanut butter on apples or bananas. I make this my breakfast once or twice a week. I use the low carb Skippy brand to its really good.

Slice a banana in half (lengthwise), spread it with peanut butter, and stick 'er back together. Enjoy. :P
And perhaps you could try the cottage cheese with fruit? I like it with pretty much anything, but strawberries or pineapple are especially good.

Peanut butter on rice cakes.
Cottage cheese and jello (set with a spoonful of lite cool whip on top). Just a couple of suggestions.

I like it with slices tomatoes, salt & pepper. I also add a little to my salad so that I don't use as much dressing.
OK, jello sounds really wierd. I'll have to think about that one.
Salad sounds interesting... might be worth a shot.
Other than eating it plain, I have no idea what to do with this stuff lol.

they have the packs at the store and half is CC and the other half is fruit...its good and healthy...
This may be a southern thing but I like it with a tablespoon of apple butter. I also like it on veggie soup. Makes for a low fat creamy soup.
Somewhere else there was a post in which someone said she like it with cinnamon and a little bit of vanilla. I've never tried it, but I'm planning to!
Thanks for all the suggestions! I don't know why cottage cheese freaks me out so much. Think that film from grade school is still in my head. I just don't know how to treat it; kinda like you would cheese, or kinda like what it looks like, like yogurt, or what to do.

hiya nymo-
i've switched to cottage cheese this week to give my mornings a different twist, and i gotta say it's done me well. i've done a couple of different things. i put my vanilla protein powder in it each morning (doubles the protein), and one morning i added banannas, did a few mornings with banannas and peaches, and did this morning with peaches and 1/4 cup of kashi go lean crunch. that was by far my favorite, but i bet it would be even better by combining all three.
and all that stays under 300 cal, and with all that protein, it keeps me going for much of the morning (around 11 or 11:30 i'll have 1/2 a grapefruit).
hope that helps! it's good stuff!

lol @ cheatingirl... my thoughts, too!
I haven't eaten it since I was a kid, either. My friend's family used to mix cottage cheese with berry jam and serve it as a salad. I thought that was so weird! Still, it tasted ok, I just couldn't get past the cottage cheesey-ness of it.
I might have to give cottage cheese another try, though. Maybe mix in some pineapple or peaches with a little juice...? Kadiladie's ideas sound pretty good.

hmm.. i'm probably weird too but i LOVE cottage cheese.. but i hate it with fruit or anything sweet.. my favorite way to have it is with sliced tomatoes on the bottom, the cottage cheese, sprinkled with minced onion and topped with freshly ground black pepper.. mmmm..
Cottage cheese and jam?! 2 birds with one stone! I need a new vehicle for my jam and jellies too! I'll have to give that one a try. I always go overboard on starches and realized if I can just find bread (food vehicle) subsitutes it would help me a ton!
Tomatos and onion with some pepper sounds like a nice salad approach. I'll have to try that too!
Heehee, Cheatingirl I didn't even know where the cottage cheese lived in the grocery store until this week. LOL I'm telling you, the stuff really boggles me.
Thanks so much for the responses!

OMG.. watching the simpsons.. the episode where bart has a heart attack because of his weight.. anyway.. when they are encouraging him to eat healthy marge gives him cottage cheese.. and he says.. and i quote: "ewww.. that cheese looks like it's already been eaten!" hahaha.. thought you guys would appreciate that.. of course that doesn't encourage you to like it now does it? hahah
I like pineapple in my cottage cheese.
I also like to add tomatoes and sprinkle some mrs dash.
I do also eat cottage cheese with cinnamon and a sprinkle of sweetener. I wonder how it would be with honey??
When I was a kid and my parents had me on weight watchers, we used to put cottage cheese on toast with cinnamon.

Now a tip for peanut butter...
I use the reduced fat kind. Use the 2T serving size ... now get this... add sugar free pancake syrup to it... mix it up nice and creamy and dip sliced apples into it. The syrup thins it nicely and also makes a really good portion for only 30 or so calories more. I guess if you wanted you could cut back on the peanut butter by stretching the portion with the s.f. syrup.
The sugar free syrup is more expensive (like all the healthier foods) but you only use ¼ cup at a time, so a bottle lasts pretty long. Did you know that the full blown syrup is like 150 calories for ¼ cup vs. 30 calories for the sugar free stuff? Quite a difference!

Ok. So I tried the cottage cheese with vanilla and cinnemon
idea. How much vanilla should I have used? I thought hmm
ok, about a Tbsp and I think that killed it. Didn't seem
like a lot...
And when we say vanilla, we mean vanilla extract? Well, at least that's what I had in the cupboard so that's what I was using.
Then I didn't have any cinnemon that wasn't already blended with some sugar (mostly sugar) so I used that instead of straight cinnemon.
I ate half of my 1/2cup serving and had to throw it out. I was telling myself, 'this is protein! eat it!' and I just couldn't. I think either my vanilla was bad or I used too much. Or maybe it was the sugar that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
This is part of my problem with losing weight. I can't cook for shit. I have no idea what food is for, and I have no interest in dirtying half a dozen bowls just to make one meal. As if this was hardly 'cooking'. But how many times have you burnt hard boiled eggs? Well, I've done it twice in the last month. I don't deserve to own a kitchen.
Peanut butter and 1/4 cup of sugar free pancake syrup as an apple dip. I might have to try that one.
