I have been thinking about buying cottage cheese since it is so nutritional and filling but I was not totally convinced to buy it since I did not know if I would like it but today I had lunch at a buffet, tried it, and liked it. So my question is when I go buy it at the store should I buy low fat or fat free? Does the fat free version taste bad?
I'm not a big fan of cottage cheese, but I did get it with my egg whites and toast for breakfast at a restaurant this weekend and spread it on my toast. It wasn't that bad, I would have liked to sprinke some cinnamon and splenda on it. I would get the lowfat version of it and not the non-fat, I think nonfat cc tastes pretty bad unless you mask it with fruits, etc. I would also use it in things like a lowfat lasagna or run it through a food processor to make dips, etc.
I completely agree with mykanosdelight! I had just logged cottage cheese when I saw your post about cottage cheese, and I knew I had to give my two cents. Fat free is just plain bland. I like to eat lowfat by itself or on Kavli crackers for an easy quick filling protein boost during the day for snack, or at night when I haven't had all my calories and don't want to go to bed with something heavy.
Well I've had 2% and 1%, the 1% doesn't taste as good at all so I can't imagine fat free. The difference between 1 and 2 is like 10 calories, so I just get 2%...
when it comes to cottage cheese, i actually always go with the 4%..... it's likely what you had in a restaurant, and to be honest, i find the low fat and fat free don't taste anything like it.... (but that could just be me...)
i stood in the grocery store for about 10 minutes humming and hawwing over it just the other day actually... haha
there is actually very little difference in calories b/w 2% and 4% (100 vs. 110 per 1/2 cup), fat free actually has about 90... although there is a significant difference in fat.
just my preference... but i just can't get used to the others... and i figure if i'm changing my diet so drastically, i might as well give myself a few pleasures :)
you'll probably just have to try a couple, and see which one you like best...
Thnx for your replies! I think I will try the 2% first, if it does'nt taste good then I will move up from there.
It looks like I may be alone on this one, but I don't have a problem with the taste of the fat free at all. Occasionally I'll throw a dash of salt or pepper on it, but most of the time it's fine to eat plain - not bland at all, and it still has a little of that tang.
I don't mind the plain either, but I have to admit I like the 1% better. It may have a bit of saturated fat, but it still had the same calories as the fat free, so why fight it? :)
Also, personally, I prefer small-curd as it is less chunky and easier to spread on stuff.
I can't tell the difference between the fat-free and the whole milk variety honestly. xD All cottage cheese tastes the same to me.
While were on the subject, how do you guys like to eat it best? I usually mix it with fruit-- I didn't think to spread it on crackers, that sounds good!
I like it plain, but it's great with fruit and veggies as well - sometimes I'll warm up frozen 'fajita mix' vegetables and have that with it, or mix in some spinach and nuke it for a few seconds. For a meal, I'll often make whole wheat spaghetti with spinach, then mix in some garlic salt and cottage cheese - healthy and delicious.
I either add garlic and chili powder/hot sauce and dip veggies in it, or I mix it with cinnamon and eat with fruit or alone.
But man, I have to try that pasta idea, trillian129. :)
I love the fat free stuff. It's the only kind I like because it doesn't taste "creamy"
Lowfat is the best, IMO. I love it on toast or a bagel with either a sliced tomato or fruit-only jam.
Oh my goodness! I ABSOLUTELY love cottage cheese! I eat it for breakfast almost every morning. I always eat it with a TON of cinnamon and a sprinkle of Spenda for some sweetness! I always get the low-fat one! I have to try it with vegetables and maybe some garlic powder!? Sounds very interesting! I'll be sure to try it!
I have eaten cottage cheese ever since I was a little kid. Usually, it's more or less always in the house (the fattiest kind). Now that I'm eating healthier, I eat the fat free kind and I don't really notice the difference. I suppose at first it takes some transitioning to, but the same can be said about skim milk, fat free cream cheese, reduced fat cheezits, etc. At first, the taste is a little off, but if you eat it more, you won't miss the the fattening kind.
When I went home, the whole milk tasted like cream, the fatty cream cheese tasted like cottage cheese in cream, and the regular cheezits tasted very rich.
So, I'd say, try transitioning to the fat free and if you can't go with it, go back to the other kind; it can't hurt to try.
I also like adding pepper to my cottage cheese, so perhaps that's one of the reasons I don't mind it :-)
I actually like the 1% the best. I've tried the higher fat options and don't like them, find they leave a weird aftertaste.
This is unusual as I usually always opt for "full fat" stuff and just moderate because I generally don't like reduced fat, so called food:)
I usually get the fat free. I don't think there is much difference in taste, but I would agree it's different in texture. It's like the difference between milks with different fat values. Last week when I bought it I considered getting a higher fat variety b/c of the sodium, but opted for the fat free anyway.
My favorite way to eat it is with light canned peaches. Yummy!
I buy the fat free cottage cheese. And while I can not eat it plain I LOVE it wiht blueberries and a tbsp of honey yummmmm
friendshio farms 1% original is definitely the best I've had!!! The whipped I heard is good, but I like the texture!!!
My mornings on the go is 1/2 cup low fat cottage cheese (borden or lactaid brand), 1/4 cup pumpkin, 1/3 cup fiber one, cinnamon and splenda. so yummy and keeps me full for a while. For a snack I always add fruit. Can't eat it by itself.
