cottage cheese ideas?
i'm looking for ways to jazz up cottage cheese. i'm a vegetarian, so the protein in it is pretty crucial for me. ^^
i usually do the whole "strawberries" or other fruit idea, but what are some other yummy and healthy ideas?
I love pineapple or tomato on mine.
~Chopped apples, banana, rasins. dried figs or dates
~Almonds, walnuts, cashews, PB
~granola, crumbled larabars
~Fill a wrap/pita/sandwich with it and add veggies of choice
~spread a wrap with tomato sauce. Top with cottage cheese, spinach, and sun dried tomatoes.
~have with a sweet potato or acorn squash with a little cinnamon
I like cottage cheese in my salad instead of dressing and on top of a baked potato instead of butter or sour cream. Another idea is to drain it some with a cheese cloth add some of your favoriye spices and use it on melba toast or crackers.
Some of my uses for cottage cheese have already been said (salad dressing/sandwich spread). I also replace it anytime you might think of using sour cream, such as a taco salad. I also use it to replace mayo in things like tuna or egg salad....but that's true, you are a vegetarian. You can also blend it and make it more "spreadable", and add any flavorings to make your own dip. My personal favorite is to mix it with rehydrated sundried tomatoes (not the packed in oil kind) & basil - but you can really use anything you like.
Peanut butter!!!!
(omnomnom)
If I'm having it essentially plain I add cinnamon (or whatever spices you like). If you like it sweeter, you can add spice + sugar/splenda.
For a more substantial meal/snack, I like adding cereal: my favorite is fiber one, but go crazy! Try special k, cheerios, whatever you like!
More ideas for add ins: trail mix or nuts (even more protein!!!!), dried fruit, nutella (YUM), jelly/jam, crushed up snack type foods (pretzels, chips, crackers, etc)
thanks for all of the ideas guys! i like it on a high fiber wrap with strawberries, but the idea with the potato and one with the splenda idea sound really good! mmm haha!
I like mine on a bed of lettuce topped with pineapple chunks and pepper.
You can also make a great cream cheese substitute using low fat cottage cheese and light sour cream.
A little drizzle of honey complements the tartness of the cheese oh, so nicely.. YUM!
Really Really fresh tomato, cut up and pour a liiiittle bit of frech or catalina dressing on top. YUM!
peanut butter & banana, (with honey to taste, can put some cinnamon or pumpkin spices) but whip it with a blender or food processor, taste like cheese cake.
or i have some on flax bread with some english hot mustard, you could put finely chopped onions & some spinach with it too.
topped with cottage cheese, chopped red onion, raisins and light thousand island dressing
don't knock it till you've tried it![]()
I made up a batch of "Sante Fe Bean & Rice", very similar to the Weight Watchers frozen lunch. Rice, canned tomatoes, kidney beans, salsa, cheese... I make up a big batch of that, then freeze it in meal sized containers. When I go to eat it, I heat it up, throw in a half cup of 1% cottage cheese, and there you go... Relatively healthy, high protein. I wish I could find the low sodium version around here, though...

seems like cottage cheese with some beans thrown in might be like beans & rice.
I am going to try it!
I've had the rachels with red peppers (YUM) and the rachels with cucumber (too tangy for me)
I have just been eating it with pepper.

I had my cottage cheese with my "Santa Fe Beans & Rice" for lunch. Rice, kidney beans, tomato sauce, salsa, and a bit of cheese. Then lately I've been heating it up for lunches with a half cup of cottage cheese thrown in. Gets me extra protein compared to the non-cottage cheese version, and it tastes good.
