Cottage cheese.. any suggestions?
I just bought a container of fat free cottage cheese. I've never tried it before I bought this. It doesn't taste bad.. But it's not the best either. I would like to continue eating it since it's healthy. Any suggestions on how to make it taste better??
first i would say eat what you like and like what you eat...you shouldn't force yourself to eat anything that isn't palatable...at least in my opinion. yogurt is a good substitute for cottage cheese but if you must have it then i would suggest drizzling honey on it...just enough to make it lightly sweet without adding too many cals and sugar...then adding some sliced almonds to it...very nutritious...you could even slice up some bananas to mix in. if you're more a salty person you can add salt and pepper to it and have it with a slice of whole grain toast and tomato slices. hope these suggestions help...oh and the eat what you like thing is all in friendliness.not condescension =)
I love cottage cheese with fruit. Pineapple, peaches or berries are my favorite. I also think low fat cottage cheese tastes much better than fat free and only has about 10 more calories per serving, so that might be worth trying!
Thanks for the suggestions. They sound good. I may try the low fat stuff, but since I bought this huge container of it, I'd like to eat it so I don't waste it
I love the taste of cottage cheese. 1% tastes better.
There was a time that I didn't like it, however. I remember mixing it with a package of fat-free, sugar-free pudding mix.
I love cottage cheese - I like "Skim" (2%). Great source of low-cal protein. I LUV it with pineapple, I have it as a snack several afternoons a week.
I also use it w/fat-free yogurt to make low cal dips for veggies (Uncle Dan's Original Salad Dressing mix). I'm not a bit vegetable fan, but just 1/2 cup of dip can hold me through a ton of raw veg's.
My husband likes it w/salt & pepper, which I never heard of elsewhere until chrissy1988 mentioned it above. Seems plenty salty to me w/out adding extra, but to each their own...
Some people just don't like it. For some other people, cottage cheese = "diet food" and their mouths just slam shut at the very idea.
I like it on baked potatoes! It's also not bad on salad and it's great with fruit. Sometimes wen I want a quick snack I'll eat it with lowfat crackers or dip veggies in it. The 2% tastes a little richer than the fat free.
Hi Andrea, I am not a huge fan of cottage cheese, but there is an old Weight Watchers recipe for "cheese blintzes" that I love.
Toast a piece of bread
Spread 1/2 cup cottage cheese on the bread - to the edges
Sprinkle with 1 tsp. splenda
Sprinkle with cinnamon to taste (I use a lot)
Place under the broiler until cheese just begins to melt.
It doesn't sound great - warm cottage cheese - but it is yummy!
(You can skip the bread if you want to save the calories; just put the cottage cheese in an aluminum pan and put it under the broiler - tastes alot like warm rice pudding)
I love to add a little bit of cinnamon and some almonds. It gives it a sweet and salty kind of a taste. Also try it with some pineapple or even orange slices.
I have heard of a lot of people mixing cottage cheese with pudding mix... how much cottage cheese do you use for a box of pudding?
i usually mix in some pineapple or strawberries.
and if i'm feeling like having a little extra taste i do this...
1/2 cup cottage cheese
1 cup strawberries
1/4 cup dark chocolate morsels
it tastes good and it good for you : )
OMG.
Usually when people describe "healthy" dessert-like treats - I just roll my eyes and move on. When I want a dessert, I want the real thing.
But hollistercute210, when you described cottage cheese/strawberries/dark choc chips, I thought I would swoon!
And cottage cheese/pudding? Very intriguing!
I use fat free cottage cheese to make protein pancakes at least 3 times a week. 1/3 cup cottage cheese, 3 egg whites, 1/3 cup oatmeal. Put it in the blender and whip it all up, fry with a little spray in a non-stick pan. It's delicious with a little bit of sugar free syrup or applesauce on top, packed with protein.
I mix it with tuna, instead of using mayo. plus pepper. the cottage cheese is drier than with mayo tho. I personally like this cottage cheese/ tuna mix without the bread, odd as it seems.
I also like it on toasted bread with fresh sliced tomatoes and black pepper.
I dumped 1 packet of instant pudding mix in a container of cottage cheese with 6 servings. I think it was the vanilla flavour.
i puree it in the blender and use it for everything... in place of mayo in tuna or crab salad, mixed with ranch seasoning as a dip for veggies, warmed with pasta as a sauce, on baked potatoes in place of sour cream, etc. i like it better than ff yogurt... i was using plain lowfat yogurt in everything but decided to go fat free on dairy, and i like the pureed ff cottage cheese better than ff yogurt....
ok so ive never had cottage cheese before. What does it taste like? My b'f has been on a cottage cheese kick w. fruit and iunno it just looks like it would be sour tasting.
I mix it with a package of ranch dressing mix and eat it with veggies, on salad or whole wheat crackers. It is sooo good.
I love adding apple butter, honey, agave or real-fruit jam to cottage cheese. Lately I've been enjoying a combo of half-cottage cheese/half-plain yogurt. The yogurt cuts down on the sodium of the cottage cheese & make it creamier without sacrificing a lot of protein.
try adding cinnamon! yum.
