Cottage Cheese: Yay or Nay?

Quote  |  Reply

Right now I'm trying my best to build muscle, and in doing so I want to consume a lot of protein. I find that low fat cottage cheese seems to be a healthy option among people who want to build muscle because it has casein (spelling?) protein which is very slowly digested. This morning I had six egg whites and 1/2 a cup of low fat cottage cheese for breakfast, a couple more tablespoons with my lunch, and I plan on having another few spoonfulls before bed; however, the issue that concerns me is the sodium. I don't eat ketchup or lunch meats with sodium nitrates, so with the exception of the cottage cheese my diet is really low in sodium but I think that it could become a problem if I eat this much cottage cheese. Any advice?

Long term it could be a problem, but hey, there's worse things you could be eating that is loaded in sodium than cottage cheese ... like fries - LOL. If the rest of your diet is relatively low in sodium and you have no other health risk factors or your doctor has never told you to reduce sodium then I wouldn't worry about it. I eat a lot of cottage cheese too. If you were eating loads of it for 20 years, that might be another thing, but if it's for a specific purpose I'd say go for it.

We've go two no sodium added lowfat cottage cheeses available around here - Dean's and Lucerne.  They taste pretty blah without the salt, but taste fine with some seasoning.

so you'll be eating a serving and a half of cottage cheese a day (1/2 cup plus a few tablespoons)?  this will neither make or break your protein bank or your sodium bank.  if you're trying your best to build muscle, you'd also be eating at a caloric surplus, which is really what you'll need to build muscle.  my guess, based on past behaviors, is that you're not.  and so this journey that you've undertaken for the past year or more to build muscle while you're consuming far below your caloric needs will continue.

Um, how about you stick to the question I'm asking? All I wanted to know was whether or not the sodium in cottage cheese would negatively affect me. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. You don't have to cross check my post with previous postings of mine and do detective work to come up with a smart-ass response.

i did answer your question (see the part about the sodium bank) and anticipated other questions that will come.  you've asked the same question in 100 different forms.  and the answer is always the same.  it's your choice whether or not you do what IS going to work, rather than continuing to try more and more of what hasn't worked.  i'm not trying to be a smart ass and i didn't do any detective work other than work from memory.  i'm sorry that you struggle with this and really wish for you that you could get out of this trap that is keeping you so stuck.  good luck....

The only question you asked as "any advice?", Laura provided advice, which was an answer to your question.

Nobody can give you a simple answer because you didn't provide enough information for anyone to determine whether or not it would negatively affect you.

I think its like anything else, its fine in moderation.  Its a great source of protien so eating a serving a day won't hurt but it is high in sodium so don't go overboard.  I put cottage cheese on sweet potato all the time for a snack.

also the no salt kind tastes awful!!
