I'm on week 3 now. Is anyone else here on this program?

Hey everyone! Well I did my first "couch to 5k" workout today. I felt great. I did a slow pace, i dinot want to get discouraged. I walked for 5 min. warm up and cool down and alternated 60 secs. of running at 4.5 mph and 90 secs. of walking at 3.2 for 20 mins. as instructed.
Like i said it felt great! For the first time since i can remember my shins didn't hurt, i think i was straining myself to much too fast. I am so excited!!!
I am definitely just working on the TIME i run first. Once i get stronger i'll work on speed, than distance. I ran cross country when i was in middle school and was ran for excercise thru my senior year in high school. I am only 24 and have gained like 65 lbs! Anyway, it is all water under the bridge now. I feel so blessed to have you guys to post comments with!
I think this program will be totaly doable, i'll let you know how it goes!
Well, I did my first 2 couch to 5K workouts this week. It was fun and I wanted to thank whomever suggested it. The intervals really helped. I tried running before and always gave up because I couldn't go that far.
My hubby used to like to run, hopefully this will encourage him to start again too!

You guys are doing great! May I suggest Galloway's Book on Running. It was extremely helpful in my quest to run the Marathon for my fiftieth birthday. Check out jeffgalloway.com he is a truly insperational runner who believe's anything in fitness can be achieved without the blood a guts attitude of some trainers. He ran the 10K event in the 1972 Olympics and was the backup in the Marathon. He believes in and created the Run/Walk method we use today(much to the disdain of a lot of "professinal" runners. Look'um up guy's and keep on truckin!

Woo hoo! You started faster than me-- I barely go over 3.0 mph right now. I like the idea of time, then speed and distance as goals. I'm going to start over at week 2 this week since I wasn't able to do anything last week for various reasons. Yay for you!

You're welcome! That's always been my problem with running too. It was just too hard. I'm glad this little group is growing.
I am so glad we will all be able to keep each other motivated. I like the "accountability" and the opinions and ideas people are posting. My workouts are going to be on MWF. Let me know how your workouts go next week Java!
I'm very tempted by this program/challenge and it looks like something I could totally do! A member from this site brought this program to my attention and I was very interested. I just want to get a week or two of regular cardio/strength workouts under my belt (trying not to do too much too fast) and then I'll sign up for good!

Ok count me in.
All right Allie!! I am so obsessed with wanting to accomplish this. I retyped it on my own chart in excel, lol. I know it's crazy, i'm sure we'll keep eachother motived.
I know better than this! I have been doing the run/walk method since july. I have dropped 23 lbs. The other day I was doing my work out -2 min at 3.7 mph then 5 min at 4.4 mph. I do this for 45 minutes. Well about half way through I felt so good I decided to stay at 4.4. Then ahhh 4.6 wasn't that bad. then 5! For about 2 min then I went back to 3.7 for recovery for a minute than back up to 5 for 3 min. All on a 1 degree slope! I went this way for 55 minutes with 5 minute cool down. Needless to say the next day everything was on fire including my right knee that I have already had 2 cartalage surgeries on. I took motrin, ice blah, blah blah. This is the third day and its starting to feel better. I have a hard time controling my enthusisum(?) I got to learn to control myself and not get so carried away when I'm feeling good.
Anybody else ever do something this dumb?
Yes! I am not the only one! LOL I am rather competitive, and when I get on a treadmill next to a thinner girl I will often push myself to keep up and end up sore as all get up. Pulled a muscle doing that before
. I guess I get baffled with running, because I can Hike miles through the mountains like 12 or so just fine, but I can't even run a mile nonstop yet! Hopefully, with this program that will all change.

I think that's what's great about this program-- it encourages you to go at a decent rate and slowly increases. I know now from your experiences to keep with the program and not try to do too much. Although I'm not sure now if I need to start over from the top or what since I've been off of it for nearly 2 weeks now.
Well, if you were rather far along, you may not need to go back to the beginning, maybe just a week or so. I would just give it a try and see what feels good like a workout, but is not a death march.

To anyone that use's a treadmill, Make sure to watch your calories's used. My treadmill can adjust the percentage of grade at which you run. So if your running uphill at a 5% grade your using alot more calories's than you would on flat a surface. There is nothing in the activities list that say's anything about running on a grade. I wonder if C.C. could add that into their list? Keep up your workouts everyone!
Thanks for the tip daddon! To be honest i haven't been paying much attention to the calorie's used and "treat" myself to work calories. In my dream world I am totally underestimating them, lol. I guess it has worked because i've lost about 7 pounds in 2 weeks (yaayy)! Anyway, thanks for the tip think it's very important to take that into consideration..... especially if you decide to have a "treat"!
How's everyone doing out there? I just thought I would check. I am currently working on week 2 I did week one twice, or actually I started jogging at 30 seconds and then week 2 I did 60, because thats what I could do without keeling over. LOL. Anyways, I am enjoying it and its going well.

Hey Audrey!
That's awesome, I am glad you are enjoying it. I am still so thoroughly obsessed
. I finish my second week today. So Friday I will start the 3rd. I have been conveniently keeping my workouts MWF. It still feels good, sometimes i want to get excited and keep going, instead i just jog an extra minute or two at the END of my workout.
How is everybody else doing??
I just walk at this time. Is there a big difference in running and walking shoes. Just got some New Balance for walking, went to a fitness store that made sure I was walking right (have had some knee problems). Said there was no problem with the way I walked. Would like to try jogging (slowly, very slowly). Not sure if it makes a difference with the shoes. Anyone know?
Walking shoes are usually a little heavier and stiffer than running shoes. Obviously, the amount will vary some between brands and styles. Ideally, you would want to go to a good store where they can size you properly and observe your stride, or at least look at the wear pattern of an old pair of shoes to help you find the best shoes for your activities. (Sounds like you did for walking shoes). If you have knee, or other problems, I would recommend doing this because it will decrease further injury and make your running experience more comfortable to have the correct shoe for you. Also consult with your doctor just to make sure it isn't to much stress at this point to be running.

Good job you guys! I hate to admit that I've fallen off the proverbial wagon (treadmill) after starting this thread. I do plan to get back up there soon.
