Couch-To-5k Motivational Thread

Quote  |  Reply
Hey everyone!
So, i set this up mainly for those in my weight loss challenge, but anyone (runner or run-phobic) can join up for extra motivation to get out there and move!

Here is a link to the website for C25K:
http://www.c25k.com/

Which also has pod casts for Ipods which will tell you when to start and stop jogging/running.
But, you can count in your head if you don't have an ipod, or you can just set small distances.
Perhaps, run to the next letterbox, then walk for two?
Or, run to the next power line if you live in the country like me! lol.

And here is a link to the program... I find its good to print it out and keep it on your wall, then you can put a tick on the runs when you have completed them:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.s html

I will be running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and plan to begin next Monday (7th July) because i like the "orderly-ness" of starting on a Monday lol.

However, feel free to start which ever day you like!

Everyone needs motivation to work out sometimes :) so lets support each other to reach our goals!
Happy running everyone!

we seriously all rockkkkkCool

finished W5 today, but I did my first 20 minute run (W5D3) yesterday ... getting started was a bit difficult, but I was lovin the last 5 minutes Smile

edit: oh yes, and great idea for a challenge bobev ... I'm in!

W6D1 is history! At the end of the first 5 min jog I could have kept going. The 8 min jog ended on a steeper than normal incline so I was happy to stop. I finished the cool down still about 10 min walk from home. So I jogged an extra 5 minutes then walked a few to cool down and get home. Worked great.

This is a great training program! I would have never believed that I would look forward to running this much. Not this couch potato [former]!Laughing

W6D2 will be run in a different location (Ontario, CA) that is steeper than here at home, 150' low to high range where as this mornings was only 60'. Will have to monitor hr as I hit the inclines.

We can do this! Never look back! Never Give up!

did w2d2 this morning.  usually i run by myself, i find it therapeutic.  but i met a friend at a local track after warning her i'm slow and doing this c25k thing.  i usually run on the road which i do prefer; the track was a nice change because it was flat.  i felt kind of bad because my friend had to go alot slower than she would otherwise, but it was nice to have company and be able to talk while we ran.  plus i don't know that i would have gone today had i not been meeting someone; i was feeling pretty lazy this morning!

one more run/walk for week 2, then i get to start week 3, yay!

Way to go sharem! Keep it up. For me it got easier after week 4. How is everyone else doing?

Hi Guys,

I'm doing week one day one when I get home from work today!  Wish me luck.  I started running casually a couple of weeks ago but had to stop for a week because I've been unwell.

There is a footy oval directly opposite my house so it's easy enough to get going if I go straight after I get home from work.

I'm hoping to start running in the mornings now that it's starting to get a bit warmer and lighter (I live in Australia).

hey guys!

So, I did walk 2, run 12.

It was brillaint! hard, but do-able!

Whats better is I did my 5K route in 28:31!!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone is okay!

YAYYYYY!!! Awesome job guys Cool

I finished W6D2 today ... it was great!!!  haha but I would have almost rather run for a straight 20 minutes than have to stop after 10 and then start running again ... I used to LOVE the walk breaks (I still do!), but I find it sooo much harder to get going again now after stopping to walk... blah!  hahah I might eat my words after Friday though ... 25 minute run .. eek!  But I can do it Smile

Keep it up everyone!!!  And anyone who's interested should join bobev's challenge (see previous posts)!!  It'll be fun!

Finished W6D2 near my hotel on a route with steeper inclines & declines. The first mile had a 150 foot climb over the last 3/4 mi (>5% if my math is right) and the first 10 min jog! I jogged more slowly than normal and it worked, controlled my hr. Overall pace for a 2.5 mi route was 14 min/mi, a touch slower than the 13:33 I've been doing at home. Friday's 25 min run should be a piece of cake at home!

Welceom aboard annabomb! This is an awesome training program. I could never have predicted that I would be able to jog let alone enjoy it! The gradual conditioning really works so don't let it worry you.

lozzle: awesome! One of these days I'll get my 5k under 30 min. I know it will come, but don't know when. I'll try not to be jealous of ya!

mbeazley: great job! I actually found the second 10 min easier than the first even tho it had a steep but short incline. Am looking forward to Fri to.

Come on guys lets put a team together for this worldwide challenge run. Everyone signed up will run at the same time worldwide. US Eastern time is 5 pm Sat Oct 11. It will be a chance to run a 5k with others without the pressure of being in a race.: Lets run the "Kick the Couch 5K Together" on October 11-12 Challenge

I just did W9D1 in the rain :D.  A half an hour run with no walking, go me!!  It was a little harder than I expected...it was only 65 degrees and overcast, but I forgot about the humidity!!  Oh well, I got it done! :)  I think it was about 4.5 km.

Only two runs left!!  Keep up the good work everyone, we rock!! :)

Edited to add:  So, for those of you who have finished the C25K program, what did you do next?  I don't really want to enter any races, I just want to keep running for fitness and just because it's fun!  Sooo anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do next? :)

You guys are progressing so quickly! Way to go.

Carrie, I made a program by way of the Smart Coach on Runner's World. I'm doing a 16 week, 10K training program. One long run a week.

Yayyyyyyy thanks bobev Smile ... and great job everyone!

first 25 minute run tomorrow .... rar ... let's do ittttt!!!! Cool

carrie317: Way to go. So far I haven't had a chance to run in the rain. Wish I could sneak out w/o wife knowing it was raining and get it done. Must be fun

mbeazley: you'll enjoy the 25 minute run. Lots of time to experiment with pace etc.

I finished W6 it this morning. A little slower than I have before since. I ran a slight incline for the 1st mi or so (a lot less than at the hotel on Wed) then increased pace for the last 4 min. I probably could have used a faster pace overall but was being cautious. Now next Fri should be even more interesting. The 4th 25 minute day. I might run the same route and increase the pace all the way through and see what happens.

We Can do this! We rock!

Yay bobev!

I finished W6 today tooo (except I repeat it again tomorrow morning, just for kicks Tongue out)!!!  The 25 min run was great!  I went a little slower than usual though, because I was also being cautious ... I was sooo tired after I finished, but I could tell I still had some gas left in the tank ... so i'm definitely gonna try and ramp up the pace during W7!!  Today I ran at a 10:33 min/mile pace ... so I'm proud of myself for that, but it is still a tad bit slower than usual...

Wheeee! Cool

mbeazley that's awesome! I'm happy with a 13:30-14:00 min pace at this point. If I ever get under 11:00 you'll hear my screams w/o the need of a computer! Laughing

I've got to work overtime tomorrow. Will start W7 and plan on adding an extra day on Monday.

Had a great jog this morning. W7D1 - Did 2.9 mi route a whole minute faster pace than Fri, 13:18 versus 14:14! mbeazley's and Friday's jog gave me confidence to try it. I clocked the jogging portions at about 12:45 pace. Little twinges here and there (in the last 5 minutes right quad talked to me just a little tiny bit, some numbness in ball of left foot) otherwise no sweat, well, not true, a whole lotta sweat!Tongue out But no problems! Laughing I could have kept going but didn't. Being cautious.

I think I will do another tomorrow, on a longer route so I have a longer walk home. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying that time out there on the road! This is great stuff!

Repeated w7d1 again this morning. A little more of a struggle to complete the 25 minutes this time. Different route than yesterday, longer and with different inclines. This one plunges to a low point at a little over the mile mark and remains basically on an upward incline the rest of the way to the end of the 25 minutes. My quads were complaining and lower back a touch tight but I kept going and finished. Took almost 15 min to walk home from when the running stopped. I didn't pick up the pace this time like and run some more like I did when I first ran the route during w5. Overall I think my pace was about the same as yesterday tho. Hard to tell because I screwed up my hrm by pushing the wrong button and then finding out that the total was messed up because it have been on all night. I must have started it by accident when I layed stuff out last night... sigh.

I feel really bad, I haven't ran for a couple of days, well, it's more like a week now so I must get that started!

Will do it tomoz - 14 minute run with only a one minute break.

Hope it will be okay.

Finally got my butt in gear and did W9D2.  Last week was hard for me; I only ran twice, and one of those times I didn't finish the whole run so I didn't count it.  Tonight I waited until it was almost dark outside, but it was still 80 degrees!!  It didn't feel that hot though since the sun was setting.  Only one run left now!! :D

Ugh I ate a banana after I got back and I think that was a bad idea...I feel all bloated now :/.

Edited to add:  I just made myself a 16 week 10K training program on runnersworld.com for after I finish C25K...that Smart Coach thing is pretty cool :).

I just did 20 minutes without stopping! YEY!!!! I knew I could do it!
