Couch-To-5k Motivational Thread

Quote  |  Reply
Hey everyone!
So, i set this up mainly for those in my weight loss challenge, but anyone (runner or run-phobic) can join up for extra motivation to get out there and move!

Here is a link to the website for C25K:
http://www.c25k.com/

Which also has pod casts for Ipods which will tell you when to start and stop jogging/running.
But, you can count in your head if you don't have an ipod, or you can just set small distances.
Perhaps, run to the next letterbox, then walk for two?
Or, run to the next power line if you live in the country like me! lol.

And here is a link to the program... I find its good to print it out and keep it on your wall, then you can put a tick on the runs when you have completed them:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.s html

I will be running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and plan to begin next Monday (7th July) because i like the "orderly-ness" of starting on a Monday lol.

However, feel free to start which ever day you like!

Everyone needs motivation to work out sometimes :) so lets support each other to reach our goals!
Happy running everyone!

let us know, lozzle!  ( :

I am glad I had a kickas jog yesterday because today I had the worst one yet.   Nah -- just seriously got out late (about 7) and went maybe 4 blocks before I came home and just got on the bike instead...

weird.   tomorrow will be better!!!

Hi Olivia,

close but no cigar! It's a stingray : ) a lovely one at that (small female called 'wonky' because of a kink in her tail) I had the pleasure to work with them a while back.

Seriously Olivia, keep it up - everyone for that matter! You are all doing unbelievably well! The hardest run is the first one - I am totally addicted now, I am so glad I persevered through the first hard runs, now I LOVE hard runs! I just love running and I am so glad I started. If I am having a bad day, a great run can make me feel 100% better. It's like meditation some days, happy drugs on other days.

Sometimes you will find you hit the wall and just can't do it. Everyone has bad days. Even the top runners - anyone remember Paula Radcliffe at the Olympics just crashing at the side of the road and crying?! The trick is to just put it behind you and look forward! Tomorrow is a new day. Also listen to your body - running is hard on you so take care of yourself - cross training is the way forward!

Enjoy : )

HOW COOL, himantura!!!   lucky job haver!!!

you said it better than I thought it, him ---  I think it is meditation some days, torture others, and the best happy meds ever at times!!!    ( :   lol    -->  running makes me feel powerful AND empowered -- like if I can do this, I can do ANYTHING!!!!  that's a GOOD thing

well, I did it!!  i survived my wisdom teeth surgery!!  i was so nervous but it really wasnt bad at all (at least not so far... i had it done yesterday at 3:45pm) ...

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUT RUNNING AGAIN!!!!!  wow, i never thought i would ever say THAT!!!  and as a gift from my dad i got some brand new nike impax sneaks (hahah, i needed them...the sneakers i was using were about 5 yrs old and literally falling apart)

hooray this is a great feeling :)

and good going to everyone for trying their hardest! y'all are inspirational...that's for sure!! :D

yay for surviving surgery!!!    eat lots of soft stuff, and get out there on the pavement soon!   (fast recovery vibes!!!!!)

: D

I had a good jog today --  4 miles.  I <3 running!

mbeazley - Glad to hear surgery went well.  I too never thought I'd be someone say I miss running when I can't.  It's crazy how fast it becomes something we crave Laughing

I'm starting Week 5 today.  I think Day 1 & 2 will be ok, but I'm a bit nervous about that 20 minute jog on Day 3.  I don't know if I can do it! But, I suppose I will worry about it when I get there and just try my best.

Editted to add:  Just finished Week 5, Day 1 and it was REALLY easy.  Like so easy I feel as though I didn't get very much of a work out, we even did a sprint for the last minute.  Has anyone else felt this way?  Almost like as soon as you get to Week 4 it all seems do-able as long as you take it slow...

Hey everyone,

Can I join in? I'm new to CC--just started this week. I've tried the C25K once before, but never got beyond week 4. I had started up again and should be at week 4, but a group of neighbors wants to start tomorrow (July 14) from week 1. To be sociable, I think I'll start with them and just push myself harder on the runs. Or maybe I'll get to the track early and run week 4 before they get there.

I'm excited to get a little extra support--both from my neighbors and from you guys!

Sure, welcome Jerebo :)
Anyone can jump in.
I'm hoping this will just be one huge thread of motivation for those new to running and even those who do it regularly.

Monday... *groan* i have to run.
I know i'll feel better if i just get out and do it... and i have a mp3 player now so i can listen to music or the radio or whatever.
But still.... *stares out window* it looks COLD!

OK Kill me now.

I wanted to run but all last week when I couldnt do 1 compleate 25 minute run kind of got me down.

I know I need to stick to it but alas  I am weak. 4 days =- no run and counting.

There is a running club that meets twice a week...I am little afraid to join cause they might be out of my league but I think its time I took action to actually stick to something - I need a framework with other poeple to make myself work out...

have fun running, restless!  ( :

miss tamar --  you can do it!!!    make friends with that group and get on the road, err, beach.

I believe in you!

I was reading this forum and I wanted say "thanks."  You guys motivated me to give this program a try!!  I've been wanting to run in a 5k for awhile now...but I've never been a runner.  I'm starting this morning!!  I'm sure I'll come back huffing and puffing.  I downloaded the podcasts to help me out...so wish me luck!

LUCK LUCK LUCK, rach!!!!    you can do it ---  and it is all about getting out there doing what you can do until you can do mor,e so have fun with it and no worries!!!

 : D

good luck rach. You can do it. Stick with it and you will feel so much better afterward.

Tamarbee - jump back in. Repeat the week if you have to, but don't stop. You can do it.

restless_girl - how is your run?

Jerebo - hi and welcome

Olivia - you always have such great energy. Keep it up.

Wow!  Went out for the first day today and boy am I out of shape!  When the guy on the podcast told me I shouldn't be feeling out of breath I laughed!  It felt great afterwards though!  Can't wait for day 2 on Wed.!

So I AM going to start on Wednesday...hell I might even go out before work....I really want to be able to run...it is something that I have always wanted to do, and now that I have lost quite a bit of weight, I think that it is something that I can do....I think I might have the confidence to do it!

yay for rach!   good for you --  it WILL get easier!!!

hey jovi --  get er done!   this program realyl is helpful  ( ;   have fun with it!

Congrats on getting the first run out of the way!  I remember hearing that too and laughing Laughing

Now you've gone and done it! Between this thread and some other challenges its gotten me interested in walking/jogging again. Between my lower back, right knee and heart I didn't know if I could ever get back into it as an alternate workout to using a gym. I wanted the added flexibility as well as wishing to take my grandkids for a jog or long walk.

Well I started with a short 1-1.5 mi walk, and of course wound up with shin splints. Used some heel raising exercises I found on CC and didn't walk for a few days and they cleared up. While on vacation last week I walked around various neighborhood and started short jogging intervals to see how it would go. No back pain, and little knee pain. One walk/jog was 3.8 mi and I felt good afterward.

This sunday I did another 3 mi walk/jog with longer intervals of jogging. Finished in about 48 minutes. One problem I am encountering is that my heart rate climbs rapidly when I jog and gets to 125-128 a range where my cardiologist doesn't want it (I had a heart attack in March, but passed stress test 2 weeks later! - see my journals for full story - a true blessing) since my measured max was 137. I don't feel like I'm in an anaerobic state, but have to be careful. My son who is a marathoner says the more I walk/jog out the lower I'll be able to keep my heart rate.

I will try to begin a more couch to 5k type training tomorrow with measured intervals over a 3.2 mi route.

Keep at it everyone!

woo hoo, bob!  ( :   you are rocking it!!

way to be physically fit and I cannot wait to hear how the C25k worked for you!!

Olivia where do you get those cheerleading skills?
