Couch-To-5k Motivational Thread

Quote  |  Reply
Hey everyone!
So, i set this up mainly for those in my weight loss challenge, but anyone (runner or run-phobic) can join up for extra motivation to get out there and move!

Here is a link to the website for C25K:
http://www.c25k.com/

Which also has pod casts for Ipods which will tell you when to start and stop jogging/running.
But, you can count in your head if you don't have an ipod, or you can just set small distances.
Perhaps, run to the next letterbox, then walk for two?
Or, run to the next power line if you live in the country like me! lol.

And here is a link to the program... I find its good to print it out and keep it on your wall, then you can put a tick on the runs when you have completed them:

I will be running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and plan to begin next Monday (7th July) because i like the "orderly-ness" of starting on a Monday lol.

However, feel free to start which ever day you like!

Everyone needs motivation to work out sometimes :) so lets support each other to reach our goals!
Happy running everyone!

Hey all....thanks for all the info on shoes, now when I go to the store I can sound all smart and stuff!

I'm going to walk again today since I can't get to the gym again until Monday (will be on a plane all day Saturday and then Sunday with family...gonna hit mom up for new shoes!)  ANYWAY...where I was going with that is, if I walk at a very brisk pace (say warm up at 3.5 and walk a steady 4 to 4.5) would I still be prepared to move on to week three or should I repeat week 2?  I'm not sore today, but I don't want to hurt all weekend so I'm going to stick with walking today...and maybe get on the bike too.

Have a super day everyone!

My neighbor and I walked a 2.8 mi route at what I thought was a good pace, but it took us 55 min, so that was only what, ~3 mi/hr. I guess I need to talk less and break away for jogging intervals when I walk with him. He's not allowed to jog for medical reasons. I'll go out Sun morning for a wog by myself so I can at least see if I can jog longer than 40 seconds before hitting hr limit. Still and all it felt good to get out there!

Keep at it everyone! This is a lifestyle change for us all!

Hi!

I just started the C25K program and yesterday was my second day.  All I did was what the directions on the web site said, but it didn't seem like much of a workout.  I stopped when I had completed the time allotted because it said to stop even if you feel like you can do more.  Does this happen often?  I realize that it's going to get progressively harder, but is the first week especially easy on purpose to get you back for the second week?

caver - I found it easy at first, belive me, it doesn't stay that easy.

i think it's just to get you motivated and 'out there'.

WELL DONE BOB!

Finished W5D3...and YAY! I feel fabulous. My tummy hurts a bit and I'm still sick, but I did it! If I can do it, anyone can. Cool

great job goddess9. You are doing it even though you are sick. Take care and have a great weekend

Way to go goddess!!  I'm going to be doing W5D3 on Saturday and I am a bit nervous.  20 minutes just sounds SO intimidating.  I promised myself I could take a 1 minute rest if I absolutely need to.

Thanks, guys! :)

Alle, I was dreading W5D3 in a way, as well. All I can say is that 20 minutes is like watching a TV show without the commercials...so pace yourself! I know you've heard that a billion times, but I had to re-pace quite a few times today. You can never start out too slow. Can't wait to hear how the 20 minutes works out for you...it seems like a big, scary monster, but as many people have told me - you're already trained to do it!

omg that 20 minutes sounds scary to me. Here I am excited at finishing my first day of week 1 and being able to get 60 seconds in w/o exceeding max hr and you guys are at 20 minutes! Way to Go! Thinking positive I know I can get there, but man that seems so far away from now. I may have to take longer than 5 weeks tho. We'll see.

Well I used Robert Uley's (sp?) podcast to pace myself and I guess my "mississippi" counting was slow because I had no problem doing the 60 second intervals. Will have to see how body and drugs react when I try to go longer. I was ok on exertion scale, but did have ever so minor tightening in the upper left chest area. I'm belching like crazy now but I don't know if that was gas generated by the apple I eat before exercising or not. Time will tell. I hit a max of 117 on the last 60 seconds with quick recovery into the low 90's. Felt great. I didn't turn around at the podcasts halfway point, so I still had another 10 minute walk to get home. Overall route, using RunningAHEAD web site this time, was 2.4 mi over a fairly level course, 40 feet from hi to low points.

I'm with goddes9 and m waiting to here how alle did with week 5! Way to go guys!

btw: I should have added that I tightened my hrm strap from where I had it. I read on a RunningAHEAD forum that a loose strap can cause hr spikes, as well as electronics in the area. It did seem to reduce the spiking I saw last week when I tried wogging on my own.

Those longer runs can be intimidating, but once you do it, you feel so good about it! If I start feeling like I need a break, I tell myself I need to run for 1 more (2 more, 3 more) minute, and then if I really want to slow down, I can. Usually I get motivated enough to keep going.

I use Robert Ullrey's podcasts too, and I think he did a really nice job creating them. They were really helpful for me, and it was nice to hear him tell me when I was on my last minute! Now that I'm doing the longer runs, I'm tired of hearing the same thing over and over, so I made my own song playlists that match the time I need to run. So now if I feel like slowing down, I tell myself to at least run one more song.

Keep it up everybody!

A twenty minute run seems along way away! haha.

I missed my ladt run becuase I was away, which was a bummer - but tomoz, I'll be out there, pumpin' it!!!!!

Well done everybody, I can't wait till I get to 20 minutes!

YAY!  This morning was my first run since my wisdom teeth surgery last friday ... it was SO MUCH FUN!!  I was so pumped afterward that I had to really talk myself out of going for another run tonight!  hahaha I will pace myself though...

Ok, starting Week 1 again... it wasn't too bad at all!!  I'm excited for Week 2 and up now Laughing

Great job everybody!!  All your guys' stories inspire meeeeeee Cool

To everyone fretting about those 'long' runs, don't! I was scared too, but you are more than prepared for it. ;)

And believe me, it isn't that far away...before I knew it, I had to do that 20 minute jog! It'll come and go like nothing, promise.

Love the new pic goddess!

I did Week 4, Day 1 this morning, and man, was it challenging for me!!  I did it though, even though I felt kinda sick by the end.

Oh, and I love that now instead of logging it as "Jog/Walk Combination - Jogging less than 10 minutes", I can log it as "Running - 5 mph" (yes, I'm slow lol). :)

Carrie - thats my fav part. Coz I'm running for longer than that, lol! buh bye jog/walk combo - hello running 5mph!!!!

So, run today, will get out there, looking a bit gloomy though, I do hope the weather perks up!

I woke up a little early today and am planning on going for a run soon...I hope it doesn't rain though; it looks pretty gray outside...

Edit:  I just got back about a half hour ago - 2 miles in about 25 minutes, woo!  This is good for me considering before this summer the most I had ever ran was the mile we had to do in gym class...

AMEN to changing the way you log that hard work!!!   ( :

(nothing wrong with wogging though ----   that's how we all got started, well, mostly)

: D

Hi All,

I didn't know if I could jump in on your challenge a bit late? I need some motivation to get me going. I took a month hiatus from running and just started up yesterday again, I was able to pound out a 20 min jog....really slow miles, but I did it. After finding this forum, I think I would rather start up this way, since my body is hating me today, it's sad to say I actually miss being this sore....I have to remember that for the future. Basically I would like to drop about 15- 20#'s and get in shape.

I hope everyone is having a good day!!

Thanks! I look icky because it was moving day, but never we mind. :P

Welcome, newbies and keep jogging everyone!

Oh, and I forgot to change the weight setting to my lower weight in the last few weeks, so I've been overestimating calorie burn. Ugh! While I like being lighter, I'll miss doing less and burning more! Yell
