Couch-To-5k Motivational Thread
So, i set this up mainly for those in my weight loss challenge, but anyone (runner or run-phobic) can join up for extra motivation to get out there and move!
Here is a link to the website for C25K:
http://www.c25k.com/
Which also has pod casts for Ipods which will tell you when to start and stop jogging/running.
But, you can count in your head if you don't have an ipod, or you can just set small distances.
Perhaps, run to the next letterbox, then walk for two?
Or, run to the next power line if you live in the country like me! lol.
And here is a link to the program... I find its good to print it out and keep it on your wall, then you can put a tick on the runs when you have completed them:
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.s html
I will be running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and plan to begin next Monday (7th July) because i like the "orderly-ness" of starting on a Monday lol.
However, feel free to start which ever day you like!
Everyone needs motivation to work out sometimes :) so lets support each other to reach our goals!
Happy running everyone!
Did my run again today about the same as yesterday. Hopefully, before I know it, I'll be running 20 minutes without getting tired!
I just got back from my run a little bit ago (W5D2) and it looks like I got back just in time, because now it's raining. I got new shoes yesterday - Brooks Ghost - and I love them! :D
Keep it up everyone! :)
lozzle - I ran in the rain for the first time not too long ago, doesn't it make you feel all hardcore?
I like it too!
Just out of curiosity... does anyone have any plans for running after C25K? What's the next step - just keep running at your own time/distance? Are there other programs people are trying? I can't decide if I should start working on time or distance (maybe both). I'd love to hear some of your long term plans.
After this, I'll try and improve my time, and then go onto a 10K training program I think. I really like running, so, I don't think I'll give it up.
Next yr I'm gonna do race for life 5K with my mate, but I think I'll do a 10K too.
Maybe a half marathon after that! LOL.
Maybe I should do the 10K too.. I think I want to try to do a half- and/or a full-marathon by the time I'm 30 (I'm 27 now).
Hey, sorry i haven't been around.
We're in the middle of a nation wide storm so running outside isn't really an option.
When it's not pouring with rain, the wind is blowing everything away.
Being doused in rain and risking being struck my lightening or being swept off of the side of the road isn't something i want to do sooo... I haven't been doing anything.
I'm just making excuses though and now i realise i'm not going to make huge weight loss or fat loss progress like i want to if i don't work out!
I was trying to do the runs in my room, jogging on the spot and then marching on the spot, but then i found my feet were getting really sore from it so had to stop.
SO! now i'm i've written down a list of Pilate's moves and put them on my bedroom wall so i can do them every day (all going to plan).
And i'm going to start off slow with the cardio and just try to do 15 minutes on the stationary bike a day.
Then slowly bump it up to 20 minutes, or simply throw in another 15 minute workout later in the day when i've regained some energy.
I know you don't burn much fat in the first 15 minutes, but it will have to do.
Anyway, sorry for the long post and i hope everyone else is still enjoying this thread :)
Take care & Happy running! i'm off to do some Pilate's!
C.
EDIT- finished my pilates :) just have to tackle to bike now!
Well I missed my chance at first wog in the rain. My wife went nuts as I changed and forced me to go to the gym. So I did have a first - a first wog on a treadmill! Went well. I brisk walked at 3.8 mpg, jogged at 5 mph - which surprised me. I didn't realize I was moving that fast on the street. I jogged at 5.2 mph for the last interval and it felt good. Didn't feel like much of a change from 5.0 except my hr went up a touch.
Hey guys - I'm with you. I am having so much fun wogging, I don't want to stop with a 5k. I can see why my son is a marathoner. That's my long term goal is to run a marathon with my son - a lot slower of course! I'll follow the progression, of 5k to 10k to half mary to full marathon.
When we finish c25k, is there a 10k training program we can switch to and maybe continue within this forum so those who start can see what the possibilities are or do we create another forum each time?
btw w3d1 will be at my son's in Suwanee, GA. I'm looking forward to it. Based on how things went today I am ready for the 3 min interval.
WOOOO HOOOO I did W5D3 this morning :D. I was actually planning on doing it tomorrow instead of today, but when I was out running this morning I thought, I'll just run until I can't anymore. And guess what? I did all 20 minutes! :D I got up at 6 to do it because it's supposed to be 88 today, and it was really cool and nice outside.
Restless, good job finding other ways to work out even when you can't run! I hope it stops raining where you are soon. :)
Bob, congrats on finishing week two!
Bob, thats great you have your wife to motivate you :D good on you for finishing week 2.
I don't know if there is a 10k program, i'll look for one once i finish biking.
I am such a pc junkie that i have positioned the stationary bike so i can browse and chat one handed lol.
Shoulder gets a tad sore after awhile though... but it keeps me distracted! i've almost been going for an hour! it's amazing.
Only just gettin tired and sore now.
Carrie, good idea to get it done in the morning when its cooler!
And year, it'd be good if the rain would stop but the news said this weekend is going to be wet and stormy still.
Oh well!
20 seconds... 10..... aaaaand my workout is DONE!!!
... phew.
Here are three different plans i found...
http://ironboomer.com/_wsn/page4.html has both 5k and 10k...
But it doesn't note intervals like C25K, it's just slowly making your runs longer.
Aaaand another...
http://www.halhigdon.com/tenk/training.html
This one isn't really for 10k beginners tho, this one is more for once you can do 10k's... as a weekly training program to stay in shape i guess.

Boy i love endorphines... i always forget how great i feel after exercising!
Especially exercising for so long.
If i exercise for 45 mins or more i get this huge dose of happy endorphines.
This is better then being drunk! there's no nausea! lol and certainly better then being high because there's no halucinations or paranoia.
Man, emo kids should just work out more, maybe it'd make them happy haha.
My knees have been bothering me a lot, so I had to finally break down and back off running every day. Been doing every other day, biking and Bowflexing on my day off.
WHICH LEADS ME TO MY QUESTION: do most of you run every other day? if yes, then what do you do on those days off for exercise, or do you?
I used to, when i did the C25K last year i was working out with a group (i was the untrained coach chasing them with a stick -so to speak-) so on the days where i didnt have runs i would just work out with them or i would go on the bike for 30 mins instead of doing a run.
I worked out with the group every day (unless we had bad weather since it was outside) but sometimes i wanted more on my days where i wasn't running so i'd go on the stationary bike.
Olivia, do you like swimming? it's much easier on the joints and it burns loads of calories.
If your joints can't cope at the moment you could always try swimming.
400-700 cal an hour for doing laps, depending on speed, not bad in my opinion ![]()
Can't wait until the pool in town opens up! it's closed because they are making it enclosed... once it's enclosed it'll be open all year round!
I could easily get into a routine of going twice a week.
Could even bike in if i was really motivated, would take me 30 minutes though lol.
Olivia - I run three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday). My other activities include a gym cardio (elliptical and/or stair master) and strength training routine that takes about 90 minutes to complete. I also do that three days a week (Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday).
The elliptical is great for avoiding knee pain (or so I heard, I don't have the problem myself but my sister does), and I second the swimming suggestion. I just read an article at the gym that said running in water that is chest deep is supposed to be really good at improve your ability to run and avoiding joint strain (sorry I don't remember what magazine it was in or the details!).
I'm considering upping my running to five days a week, going to the gym twice a week and do strength training at home twice a week. I probably won't start this until September but I have been reading about how it's really important to change up your exercise routine on a monthly basis. This month's change is adding in biking! ![]()
Hi everyone, I need some advise. So I completed week one on Tuesday (yay for me) But somewhere along the route I stepped completely wrong and pulled something in my knee. Did'nt hurt much when I did so I completed the run. So come Thursday, (trying to run Sun, Tue & Thur) I figured that sine I started the at the end of the week I would do one more day of week one. Well I only got about half way thru and my knee was hurting so bad I couldn't finish it. So my question is do I stop completely until it feels better or do I go real slow and not push it? I'm just afraid if I have to stop completely I'll lose all my motivation again.
Well, walk 2, run 7 tmoz - I should be okay :D
Looking forward to my run tomoz, it still amazes me how much I like it!
and I agree, shellamy. My knees are a constant reminder these days. Don't ignore them!
Olivia, I try and run 5 days a week, and on the other two days I take a long walk or do nothing. The elliptical is easy on the joints, but I find that I have a hard time getting in a good workout. Maybe I need to turn up the resistance or something.
Shellamy, does your knee hurt while walking? If not, walking instead of running might help keep it loosened up and whatnot. I would say definitely no running, though! If you really did pull something in your knee, that will probably take a long time to heal too, so don't push it or you'll end up having to have surgery :/. My mom stepped in a hole in our backyard and tore something in her knee, and the doctors told her she should have surgery but she hasn't yet. She'd rather just deal with the pain.
That being said, I'm not a doctor, these are just my best educated guesses :).
heylo everyone!
bobev, in response to your earlier question, I am doing my runs on mondays, wednesdays, and fridays ... I get up super early (groan haha) and do my runs before work .... and I'm using robert ullrey's podcasts too!!! hahah his voice is both soothing and motivating to me lol
Just finished week 2 today!!! I loved it ... I really pushed myself today, whereas the other two days I ran slightly conservatively .... can't WAIT until week 3!!!! I'm lovin it!
Keep it up everyone!! y'all are doing so great and are super motivators to me ![]()
Thanks carrie317! I wog in the morning because it is cooler, even tho its been 80 at 0600 this week. Our highs have been > 100 (Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas)
restless_girl: thanks for the info. will look into them when I finish this program. I guess its endorphines that are helping me enjoy wogging. I noticed that I am on a high when I finish and even in a great mood for hours afterwards. Also a great stress reliever. Didn't feel that as a kid tho.
olivia77: I wog 3 days/wk, Sun/Wed/Fri. I don't want to re-injure my knee. Its been awhile since it really bothered me and when it did I take 2 naproxen sodium twice/day (as directed by a orthopedics dr who refused to operate because I wasn't in enough pain according to him. And this after identifying about 6 things wrong with the knee! - I guess he was right because with the weight loss, working out and wogging it feels stonger with little pain). As to what I do on non-wogging days: well I try to use the C2 rower (at gym) for at least 30 minutes. Am up to 5300 meters in 30 minutes. It gives a full body workout as well as cardio. I can feel it in my chest, shoulders, abs, and almost every muscle in my body! I also use a Wii fit at home and do body weight training at home for 30-60 minutes (jumping jacks, push ups, push ups with arm raises, squats, reverse lunges, sun salutations, roll down/ups, crunches, and lots of stretching. Actually I use sun salutations to stretch before and after wogging and C2, as well as some floor stretches.
shellamy: ease off the knee. See above discussion about what orthopedics dr told me - 2 naproxen sodium, twice/day. I also wear an elastic knee brace (futura with a hole in the center, its black I have 3 that I switch off). I've been able to give up the brace for non-exercise. Have not gotten the courage to workout without it tho!
mbeazley: The conditioning must really be working. When I finished w2 I almost jumped right into w3! Its a good thing I had to get to work. Pushing to hard is what re-injured my knee 3 years ago. I've been an early bird since I was a kid. Used to be up at 5 am and watch the TV convert its test signals to a Modern Farmer program (~1955). And I still get up early, somewhere between 0430 and 0500, even on weekends... Morning workouts are simpler for me to arrange. We are empty nesters and I like to spend time with my wife in the evenings. Plus I work on my laptop at night, for my congregation and for myself - I have a consulting/seminar business on the side
I'll be traveling tomorrow, but will try to check in Sunday after I do w3d1. My son just told me his wireless network isn't working, so there may be a problem getting connected to the single broadband port he has.
